Chapter 149: Chapter 147: Aftermath

Chapter 147: Aftermath

Baishi glanced at Kakashi, who stood a short distance away. Deciding to give it one last shot, he activated his Ring of Illusions.

An invisible wave of mental energy spread outward, and Kakashi's gaze was instinctively drawn to the red gemstone on Baishi's right hand.

The familiar sensation instantly alerted Kakashi. He had observed Aburame Ryoma fall victim to this same technique earlier and was prepared for it.

Without hesitation, Kakashi activated the Flying Thunder God Technique and vanished on the spot.

Watching Kakashi disappear without a trace, Baishi sighed in regret, already thinking of ways to counter this kind of situation in the future.

Using the Flying Thunder God Technique himself, Baishi had never fully appreciated its impact. Now that he faced it as an opponent, he finally understood how infuriating it could be for his enemies.

"No, relying solely on the Ring of Illusions is too passive. I need a better solution."

Suddenly, Baishi thought of the Yamanaka clan's Mind Transfer Jutsu. This technique allowed users to project their mental energy and take control of an opponent's body. During this time, the target would lose consciousness, rendering them incapable of using any techniques, including the Flying Thunder God.

Conveniently, the Yamanaka ninja who had attacked him earlier was still alive. Baishi could extract the secrets of this jutsu directly from his mind.

With a plan forming in his mind, Baishi swiftly made his way to the unconscious Root ninja.

However, the Yamanaka ninja's condition was dire. Blood streamed from his eyes, ears, nose, and mouth, and he was barely clinging to life.

The reason was simple: backlash.

The Mind Transfer Jutsu was indeed a remarkable technique, capable of amplifying one's mental energy several times over. Combined with the Yamanaka clan's naturally high mental strength, it was often a guaranteed success.

But this time, the Yamanaka ninja had encountered Baishi, a true anomaly. With his immense mental strength and the added defense of Mental Fortress, the attack had backfired spectacularly.

"If I were the one using it, I shouldn't have to worry about backlash."

With his current level of mental strength, Baishi doubted many could rival him.

Even if backlash did occur, his Mental Fortress would ensure no lasting harm.

This made the Mind Transfer Jutsu an ideal choice, though it required some adjustments.

The original jutsu had a critical flaw: while controlling an opponent, the user would lose control of their own body. For Baishi, this was unacceptable. Any version of the jutsu he adopted would need to be modified.

For now, though, obtaining the technique was the priority.

Baishi crouched down and first dispelled the Curse Mark of Absolute Obedience on the ninja's tongue. Then, pressing his hand against the ninja's head, he activated the Yamanaka clan's Mind Reading Jutsu.

Moments later, he began sifting through the ninja's memories.

It didn't take long for Baishi to find what he was looking for—not just the Mind Transfer Jutsu, but also its advanced version, the Mind Clone Jutsu.

This technique allowed the user to simultaneously control multiple targets, maximizing the advantages of high mental strength. It was an unexpected bonus.

Satisfied, Baishi continued delving into the ninja's memories, uncovering details about his mission and other relevant information.

Just as he had suspected, Aburame Ryoma and the others had been monitoring Ginshu.

However, the surveillance had lasted far longer than Baishi had anticipated.

"So, this was just a case of dumb luck."

If Baishi hadn't happened to pass through the Land of Forests, or if he hadn't sensed Ginshu nearby and decided to investigate, the Root operatives would likely still be waiting.

"Wait!"

Baishi suddenly noticed a detail: the surveillance operation had shifted into a trap just two weeks ago.

In other words, the Root had concluded that Baishi's appearance here was becoming increasingly likely.

"Two weeks ago… that aligns with when I left the Land of Waves."

In an instant, Baishi realized what had happened.

Danzo must have noticed his return.

Even though Baishi had killed Kado, the businessman's bounty had remained active for some time. If the Akatsuki could notice this, so could Danzo.

This explained the change in strategy, turning surveillance into a trap.

"Hmph!"

Baishi snorted coldly, muttering through gritted teeth, "Persistent old fox."

"But what about Kakashi?"

From the Yamanaka ninja's memories, Baishi confirmed that Aburame Ryoma and the others were unaware of Kakashi's involvement.

So, was Kakashi acting on his own, or was he following an order from Minato Namikaze?

If it was a personal vendetta, that was one thing—just private grudges.

But if Minato had sent him, that was a different story. It would mean the Fourth Hokage was aware of Danzo's plans and knew Ginshu was one of Baishi's people.

This would imply Minato was deliberately monitoring the situation, anticipating Baishi's potential arrival.

Although Baishi didn't hold any significant grudge against Konoha, he was technically a rogue ninja. It wasn't out of the question for Konoha to view him as a threat.

If so, Baishi would need to tread carefully. Konoha's foundation as one of the Five Great Shinobi Nations was not to be underestimated.

---

Crunch!

With a slight twist of his wrist, Baishi snapped the Root ninja's neck.

"Clean this up," he instructed Ginshu, who had arrived shortly after.

"Yes, sir!"

Ginshu quickly set about disposing of the bodies using Root's standard procedures.

Meanwhile, Baishi pondered his next steps.

He wasn't the type to sit back and wait. If Danzo was determined to come after him, Baishi wouldn't hesitate to retaliate.

Conveniently, his Spatial Awareness Enhancement was now at X (58.3%). If all went well, it would surpass its current limits within six months.

At that point, Baishi would likely be able to sense his Flying Thunder God markings even in alternate dimensions.

This would open up the possibility of creating the spatial storage ring he'd long dreamed of.

Danzo's summoning beast, the Dream Tapir, lived in a personal dimension—a perfect candidate for his experiment. Killing two birds with one stone was always satisfying.

However, attacking Danzo within Konoha was out of the question.

Though Danzo wasn't well-liked, he was still a village elder. A direct assault in Konoha would be seen as a blatant challenge to the village's authority, potentially inciting widespread retaliation.

Minato and Hiruzen, both capable of using the Reaper Death Seal, would not hesitate to retaliate if given the chance.

Baishi had no intention of giving them such an opening.

It would be far better to lure Danzo out of the village and deal with him discreetly.

But knowing Danzo's cautious nature, he would likely go to ground after losing Aburame Ryoma and the others.

As for baiting him out again, that was unlikely. Danzo wouldn't fall for the same trick twice.

It seemed this would require patience and careful planning.

Fortunately, Baishi had plenty of time to spare.
