Chapter 129: Chapter 129: Flexible Ways of Repaying Gratitude
Drip…
Drip…
Drip…
Yakumo slowly opened her eyes, her senses gradually coming back as she took in the damp, dim cave around her.
"Yakumo, you're awake?"
Mirai's voice broke the silence. Sitting up weakly, Yakumo asked, "Captain Mirai… was the surgery… successful?"
Mirai smiled faintly. "Don't worry, it went smoothly."
Hearing this, Yakumo's face lit up with relief.
Before the surgery, Orochimaru had warned her about the risks—it was nearly a death sentence. Yet, against all odds, she had survived.
"I'm so lucky… Captain Mirai," she said, her voice filled with joy.
Mirai gently ruffled Yakumo's hair but before he could respond, Orochimaru's eerie voice cut through the moment.
"Little girl, luck doesn't exist in this world. You should have died on that operating table. Mirai-kun rewrote your fate, defying the natural order."
Yakumo had no reason to doubt Orochimaru. From her interactions with Mirai, she had come to believe there was nothing he couldn't accomplish.
Looking at him with heartfelt gratitude, she said, "Captain Mirai, thank you so much."
Mirai shook his head modestly, his tone calm. "No need for thanks, Yakumo. Let me remove the seals on your body first."
Activating the Flying Thunder God Technique, Mirai teleported with Yakumo to a secluded villa.
After dispelling the seals, he led her outside to a wide-open space. Yakumo, now wearing a fitted combat outfit instead of her usual kimono, appeared brimming with energy.
As they emerged, Kurama Murakumo and Yuhi Shinku, who had been waiting anxiously, rushed forward.
Shinku spoke first. "Mirai, was the surgery successful?"
Mirai nodded. "It went very well. Yakumo, why don't you show them?"
"Yes!" Yakumo replied eagerly.
Under the astonished gazes of Murakumo and the others, Yakumo began performing a series of basic martial arts moves, albeit a bit unpolished. Then, with a burst of excitement, she started running laps around the villa.
One lap, two laps, three laps…
Her laughter, as clear and sweet as silver bells, echoed through the air.
Everyone was stunned. They had hoped Yakumo's debilitating condition could be treated, but none of them had imagined such a transformation.
Normally, even if a chronic illness were cured, a body long unused to exertion would take time to recover. Yet here was Yakumo, sprinting effortlessly after being bedridden for so long—it was nothing short of miraculous.
Even Mirai was slightly taken aback. The power of Hashirama cells truly lived up to its reputation, bringing about a complete, almost instantaneous change.
Understanding how much Yakumo had endured, everyone silently watched as she vented her emotions.
After what felt like an eternity, Yakumo finally stopped running. Tears streamed down her face, her eyes red and swollen.
She had dreamt of this moment countless times—being able to run freely under the blue sky and white clouds.
And now, it was real.
More than that, she could finally pursue her dream of becoming a ninja.
Walking up to Mirai, Yakumo dropped to her knees. "Captain Mirai, you've given me a new life. I owe you a debt I can never repay. From now on, my everything belongs to you."
Mirai quickly helped her up, brushing off her words.
"If anything, you should thank Shinku-sensei. He's the one who asked me to help."
Yakumo blinked, surprised, before turning to Shinku. "Shinku-sama, thank you so much! I swear, even in my next life, I'll repay you!"
Shinku's lips twitched awkwardly.
This girl really had a creative way of showing gratitude.
Noticing the tension, Murakumo laughed heartily and declared, "Captain Mirai, you must stay tonight! Let's drink and celebrate until we drop!"
Mirai, however, waved him off with a smile. "No need for that, Murakumo-san. As shinobi, we must abide by the Three Prohibitions."
(T/N: Jiraiya stated that the three prohibitions for a shinobi are: Alcohol, Women, Money.)
His response left everyone momentarily stunned before it dawned on them.
Despite his overwhelming power and influence, Mirai was still underage.
—
At the celebration that evening, a tipsy Murakumo approached Mirai and lowered his voice.
"Captain Mirai, Yakumo mentioned she'll need your ocular powers daily to stabilize her condition?"
Mirai nodded. "That's correct. Why do you ask?"
Murakumo hesitated, then spoke earnestly. "That's too much trouble for you. I was thinking… could Yakumo move in with you?"
"Huh?" Mirai raised an eyebrow. "Isn't that inappropriate?"
Murakumo sighed. "I know it's a bold request, but for Yakumo's sake, I hope you'll agree. Whatever you need, our clan will fully support you."
Seeing Yakumo's hopeful eyes, Mirai could only relent with a sigh.
So, this is what it means to be too capable.
—
Back at the Uchiha compound, Mirai explained the situation to Mikoto. With her usual gentle smile, she promptly prepared a room for Yakumo.
Later, as they returned to their room, Mikoto noticed Mirai's thoughtful expression. Concerned, she asked, "Are you worried about me?"
Mirai shook his head. "No, it's not that."
"Then what's bothering you?"
Mirai frowned slightly. "Our house is too small. I'm worried your… nighttime activities might disturb Yakumo. She's at an age where curiosity gets the better of her. What if she can't sleep and sneaks to the door?"
Before he could finish, Mikoto's face turned crimson.
This man… how could he always leave her flustered with just a few words?
And now, imagining the scene he described, her body felt unbearably warm all over again.
