Chapter 120: Chapter 118: A New Seal in Town
"Change activation mechanism? How are you going to do that?" Dan asked.
As Dan enquired about changing the activation mechanism, Ryu's eyes lit up with excitement.
"There are many ways to achieve that," he explained. "For the barrier, I envision an automated mechanism using a sensory feedback unit through a perception seal. This way, the barrier will only form when it senses an approaching threat, saving chakra and ensuring selective deployment."
Dan nodded in agreement, impressed by Ryu's innovative thinking. "That is a very brilliant idea; not only will it save chakra, it will make it so that only a few people will be able to deploy this barrier, if you are able to do that." Dan said.
Dan asked, "What other ideas do you have?"
Encouraged by Dan's interest, Ryu continued, "Another idea is to remove the dependency on constant chakra supply by integrating a chakra storage unit within the seal itself. This would make the barrier self-sufficient, requiring chakra supply only periodically. Combining this with the automated mechanism would significantly enhance the seal's efficiency and reduce the need for multiple individuals to cast the barrier."
Dan nodded thoughtfully and said, "I must inform you that some people have attempted this before and failed."
Ryu's determination remained unwavering as he said, "Their failures don't discourage me. I haven't even attempted it yet."
He continued, "Unfortunately, those are just ideas, as you said; I cannot do this for the time being. I need more knowledge and more experience as I learn more about the fuinjutsu and more seals."
Dan smiled and encouragingly said, "You can try your ideas in the future. No need to be down. You did well to think of such ideas. Creative is a weapon in the hands of a fujitsu expert."
He paused and said, "Now, let's eat something. I am starving."
As the day drew to a close, Ryu suggested, "Why don't I cook dinner today? You've just returned home, so take it easy."
The rest of the day passed with Ryu juggling between different trainings. The next day, Ryu found himself caught up in a tedious history lesson at the academy. Meanwhile, a meeting was underway at the Hokage's office, attended by every Grandmaster on the Fuinjutsu Council.
Among them were the village elders, Koharu Utatane and Homura Mitokado, who were curious about the reason behind Hiruzen's sudden summons.
One member of the Hyuga clan, Hideto Hyuga, who was also the previous leader of the clan, ventured a guess, "Perhaps Lord Hokage has invented a new seal and wants to share it with the council members."
Shinnosuke Uchiha, a young and ambitious Uchiha member, expressed his doubts, "It's highly unlikely. No offence to the other elders, but Lord Hokage is too old, and considering his busy schedule, it's difficult to imagine him inventing a new seal."
"Arrogant as always," thought Natsurama Senju. All the members of the Senju clan were either old or very young, with just three members at jonin rank; the rest are retired. The entire clan diminished in the last three great ninja wars. Many people continue to wonder if it was a coincidence.
Natsurama Senju thought, "He may have become a grandmaster in fuinjutsu at an age comparatively less than others, but it is only due to the insight ability of his bloodline, the Sharingan Eye, and due to the reason the earlier member of his clan retired. He is still too green, though. Even though he rose to the position of grandmaster at a young age, he cannot match our experience, which comes only with age."
Just then one more elder entered the room, and the room felt silent. Danzo Shimura moved like a shark, cold and dreadful, and sat beside the chairperson's seat.
The words Shinnosuke Uchiha spoke earlier about Hokage's age, he cannot dare to say now. This was one elder that no one wants to offend, not even him.
As he sat in his seat, the council hall decented into silence. It was getting unbearable just when Hiruzen entered the scene.
He said, "Ohh. Everyone is here… I've gathered you all to share some extraordinary news. A new seal has been created, one that promises to revolutionise our understanding of fuinjutsu."
The room was abuzz with surprise and curiosity.
Natsurama Senju was the first to congratulate, "Congratulations, Hiruzen, my friend! That's a remarkable achievement, especially at your age. I think it was Lord Fourth that last achieved a new seal. Tell us, What's the nature of this new seal?"
"No, Natsurama-san, it's not actually a new seal but an optimised version of a regular storage seal, and I was not the one who developed it," Hiruzen revealed.
Everyone was surprised to hear that. The crowd in the room was the cream of the Fuinjutsu grandmasters in the village if legendary Sannins were ignored.
Natsurama Senju asked, "Not by you, then who?". Everyone had the same question in there minds.
"It was Dan Hamura," Hiruzen said.
Everyone was shocked a little; everyone knew about him and that he is a hidden grandmaster and better than most present in the meeting.
"He optimised the regular storage seal and made it 35% more efficient," Hiruzen added.
Danzo said in a low tone, "So that man finally made himself useful for once."
Hiruzen head that as he was sitting just beside him, and he gave him a side eye, and both stared at each other for a few seconds until it was interrupted by Koharu Utatane.
She said, "35% more efficient may seem less, but a great achievement. Any amount of chakra saved is good for us. Even that is not the point. If it can be done for a simple storage seal, then other seals also have this same possibility. Dan Hamura must be asked to share his method."
The atmosphere in the room shifted as the Grandmasters began to contemplate the implications of this optimised seal. Danzo, sensing an opportunity, spoke up, "I'd like to know more about this new seal too. How does it work, and what's the logic behind it?"
This was a great opportunity for Danzo; he was one of the most well-versed Grandmasters in the Leaf village. If he could optimise his other seals. It will be a huge boost to his overall strength. Others were thinking the same, but others did not ask Hokage with the same authority as Danzo or Koharu did.
Hiruzen said, "Dan will sell the optimised storage seal tags in the open market. Those who wish to learn it can do so by purchasing the seal from the open market, but commercial licenses remain with him. But those who want a commercial license on a profit-sharing basis can contact him. I have tested the seal myself, and I can affirm the authenticity of his claim."
"And what about the insight of this new seal?" Homura Mitokado asked Hiruzen.
Hiruzen sighed and replied, "Dan did not share his insight with the council. We have to figure it out on our own from the structure of the seal, as the scroll he provided did not mention the methodology or insight behind this optimisation, just the results."
Many of the grandmaster sighed in disappointment. But they all understood, as they would have done the same. They were all from great ninja clans that needed to leave behind a legacy for their next generation. All the Ninjutsu and Fuinjutsu they develop become their secrets to keep.
But Hiruzen had lied. Dan had given him a scroll filled with all the insight and logic behind the seal machanism. But it was a gift. A gift that he does not want to share without asking Dan first. So he made a copy without insight of the seal to present before council.
Many of the councilmen thought about this new seal and whether they should buy the commercial license.
He then took the seal and presented it to the members and asked, "Any volunteers for the test?"
Many wanted to see the seal for themselves, but no one wanted to doubt Hiruzen's claim openly, as he had earlier declared that it works as intended and if they do test it, it would mean they don't trust his words.
Danzo also wanted to try it, but he also didn't, as he would soon get his hands on it from the open market.
As the meeting drew to a close, Hiruzen asked, "Are there any questions or concerns regarding this seal or any other matter?"
The room fell silent, with each member lost in their own thoughts, weighing the potential benefits and implications of this optimised seal.
"Nothing. Then the meeting is over. I will send him the certificate for the seal; no objection, right?" Hiruzen concluded. He grinned when he saw that no one had bothered to look at the copy of the seal he had painstakingly prepared just for this meeting.
He greeted the members of the council and started to leave, feeling that his job was done.
