Chapter 122: Chapter 120: Losing Cool
The next class was Taijutsu Basics, and not many were waiting too eagerly for it. Taijutsu lessons are generally taught on the training grounds after torturous workout sessions.
The instructor began the class with an intense workout, challenging the students before a brief break.
"Ten minutes," he announced. "Then we'll start the sparring session. Be ready."
After 10 minutes, the instructor, Hiroshi Tanaka, called, "Everyone gather around."
Then he spoke, "Are there any volunteers to spar?"
Kenji raised his hand and stood up, declaring, "I challenge Ryu to a spar."
When Ryu heard that, he rolled his eyes. "I knew this was going to happen. This instructor purposely called for volunteers as if he was watching when this brat challenged me in the last class."
Akira looked at him and said, "What an idiot."
She knew she could not beat Ryu without Sharingan, so she did not want to embarrass herself in front of everyone again and train some more, but Kenji did not share that belief.
He thought he could beat Ryu this time around after just a little bit of training in taijutsu. He was now being trained seriously by the upper echelons of the Uchiha clan now that he had shown his potential by awakening his sharingan so soon. All this training from the best of his clan has boosted his already high ego and stupidity.
Instructor Tanaka said, "Okay, both of you come forward."
He waited to come forward and then continued, "This time, I will change some rules for this spar. Everyone listen carefully."
He continued, "There will be a boundary. Anyone thrown out of this will automatically lose. There will also be a time limit for the spar to give other chances at duels. If the fight is not over by then, then it's automatically a tie. You can use all training weapons, shuriken, and kunai that have been dulled. And lastly, the most important one: no ninjutsu. Is that clear to all of you?
Everyone nodded in unison, but Kenji was smiling arrogantly, reflecting his confidence. This was his chance to redeem himself by defeating Ryu, demonstrating his superiority in front of his clan, Akira, and, most importantly, himself. The two recent defeats to Ryu and Akira had severely shaken his already fragile ego.
Looking at his opponent, Kenji thought, "Ryu's speciality is his taijutsu and his stamina. I have trained very hard in the past few weeks by Taijutsu specialists of the clan just to beat you."
Kenji stood confidently before Ryu. However, he had not anticipated that his opponent's speciality was not taijutsu but thinking.
"You both performed the seal of confrontation now," said instructor Tanaka.
Both moved forward to the centre of the arena and performed the seal of confrontation.
As soon as they were done, both jumped back a few steps, forming some distance between them. Kenji made the first move by throwing some shuriken; the class was watching from some safe distance away.
Slow-motion effects activated for Ryu as he traced the trajectory of the incoming shuriken. Ryu did not even bother to move more than he needed to dodge the incoming shuriken. He just moved his head to the side and dodged the shuriken, all while his eyes were following Kanji, trying to move close to him. Ryu, after dodging, stood still and let Kenji approach him.
Kenji punched him, and Ryu swiftly dodged again, and thus the taijutsu battle begins. Kenji tried to overwhelm Ryu by attacking nonstop and not giving Ryu a moment to think. However, Kenji was unaware that Ryu's speciality lay not in taijutsu but in strategic thinking.
He had already activated his predictive projections and had calculated every move a few seconds in advance. And a few seconds of advantage were more than enough for Ryu to handle him. For Ryu, Kenji was moving in slow motion. He again took a few steps back and again used shuriken. Actually two this time around.
Ryu smiled and thought, "So he is aiming for that. Unfortunately for him, I have seen Sasuke teach that to Boruto."
He dodged a cluster of two shuriken like before, but this time one hit the other and pushed it towards Ryu.
"Got you," Kenji thought, smiling wickedly.
But to everyone's surprise, Ryu caught it without even looking. He observed the shuriken and thought, "Even though it has been filed down and isn't sharp, it would still leave a mark if it had hit me in the face. This is seriously getting out of hand. and he is still underestimating me. I need to teach him a lesson."
Ryu was dodging everything very easily and efficiently. He was not just dodging; he was also leading him somewhere and aiming blows where he desired. Suddenly he switched from defence to attack. Kenji switched his style too and tried to grapple him, but Ryu threw him gracefully. Kenji again attacked him head-on.
Other students watching the fight commented, "Why is Kenji fighting the air?"
Kenji got frustrated and took shurikens from his pocket and threw them at Ryu. Ryu dodged the shurikens, and in response, Kenji swiftly moved in front of Ryu, pointing a kunai at his neck.
Kenji smiled and declared he won, but Ryu smiled back, which irritated Kenji further.
Kenji then taunted Ryu, "Feeling scared now?"
Ryu still smiled and suddenly started melting into thin air.
"Got you," Ryu said as he put his own finger on the back of Kenji's head.
Kenji said, "Genjutsu. But how? We didn't learn this in class yet."
Ryu replied, "True, but we experienced it, or should I say, I experienced it?"
The instructor was also surprised. He had said no ninjutsu in spars, but he did not assume anyone would use genjutsu.
He had initially perceived Ryu as a combat specialist in Taijutsu due to his stamina, physique, and exceptional hand-to-hand combat abilities. Genjutsu requires proper chakra control, not expected of a 1st-year academy student. and Ryu just put his opponent in genjutsu without much effort, and his opponent was an Uchiha nonetheless.
"Are you an idiot?" Ryu asked.
Kenji replied, "What?"
Ryu replied, "If this was an actual battle, you would have died. Because you were so agitated, you didn't even notice that you were under genjutsu. If you lose your composure in a genuine fight, you will end up losing your life, moron."
The instructor nodded and smiled at Ryu's comments on this battle. He thought, "This boy is something else. I guess I should thank him for providing such valuable lessons to the class. I would not have explained it in better words."
Ryu did not stop there and asked, "Why didn't you use the Sharingan in this fight?"
Everyone was surprised to hear that many wondered about how and when. Even the instructor froze where he stood when he heard about the Sharingan.
Kenji's previous battle with Akira inspired him to attempt to defeat Ryu without the use of the Sharingan. Kenji just scoffed at Ryu's remarks and stared back at him.
The instructor didn't know and was amazed that Kenji had awakened his Sharingan at such a young age, even though he lost the fight.
"You are very immature," Ryu stated. "If you were an adult, I would have considered it an insult to not give your best in a fight."
Ryu told him. "You look down on other people and wear your pride and ego like jewellery, but they are actually shackles rather than jewellery."
The instructor thought, "Ryu used physical contact to put Kenji in a genjutsu. He learnt it in the previous class just by observation."
"Time for the next match," the instructor called.
The subsequent matches proceeded as expected, involving standard hand-to-hand combat, with many concluding due to time limits.
The class concluded, and now he only had regular classes like mathematics and history, subjects in which Ryu excelled without difficulty. Even if Ryu does not attend this class, he would do more than just fine, but he still attended it under the guise of training and worked on Fuinjutsu in his [Mind Palace] after setting the other parts of his mind on record mode.
While working on the new seals, he found and matched a few symbols from his mind archive to the privacy seals and discovered some meaning of some unidentified symbols whose meaning was not known. However, he now had a general understanding of the meaning of those symbols.
He then had a peculiar idea. He thought that barrier seals and privacy seals would be very important for ensuring his safety at home. Now that his grandfather, Dan, has registered a new seal, there may be some prying eyes on him as well as himself.
He just had a very good idea of modifying a privacy seal and making it work in a different way than intended to ward off any such prying eyes. As the bell rang to signal the end of the day, Ryu departed for home.
