Chapter 22: Gaara
"Hey guys! I got lost!" Kakashi said with a straight face, but team 7 wasn't buying it.
As if they rehearsed it, Naruto and a girl who Aoshi assumed was Sakura yelled out synchronised. "STOP LYING WITH A STRAIGHT FACE!"
Aoshi just stood there next to Kakashi, but nobody had noticed him yet. Naruto ran up to Kakashi and begged him for harder missions so he could show how great he was. In the background, Aoshi could see the Uchiha kid sigh and roll his eyes.
These kids really weren't that great considering they still haven't questioned or even seen that another ninja came along with Kakashi, but that was the moment Sasuke's eyes went to Aoshi.
"Who is he?" That simple sentence brought a momentary silence to the group as they all turned their head towards Aoshi. He raised his left hand in a wave and spoke in a dull voice. "Yo."
Sakura's eyes widened as she inspected Aoshi from top to bottom. He was a lot taller than the people around her usually was, and he had such striking features she couldn't take her eyes off. His hair wasn't tied back today so it flowed freely around his very sharp but rather feminine face.
"Green-san!" That took Sakura out of her staring. "What are you doing here?" Naruto exclaimed with a big smile.
It was Kakashi who responded. "This is Rokushō Aoshi, due to some rather particular circumstances he will join us for the following week. He will also be temporarily living next door to you, Naruto."
A smile shone up on Naruto's face. There were few who treated Naruto well, he'd love to be neighbours with one of them! Aoshi gave a slight nod and a gentle smile. "I hope you'll have me. I won't be joining any training sessions though. But what do you say sensei, why don't we get started?"
The team looked confused when Aoshi referred to Kakashi as sensei but quickly let it go when Kakashi took out two mission scrolls.
---
Several hours went by and Aoshi fully understood what Kakashi was talking about when he mentioned they have trouble working together. They can't complete the simplest of tasks.
Aoshi meant to just stand by and watch as they did most things, but after three hours of watching them fail to catch a cat he intervened. A simple sleeping seal on the head of the cat and it was down.
Naruto at first thought he had killed it, but soon understood that Aoshi just put it to sleep. Since that quick intervention, Naruto had been praising Aoshi. He thought it felt kind of nice. Sakura hadn't said a word to him, neither had Sasuke.
Aoshi wished he was with Tenten now instead. "And that's it for today. I'm going to submit these missions." Aoshi was walking completely unharmed and unbothered while an exhausted Sakura was carrying a beaten Naruto. Sasuke was walking a bit away from the others with small buses and a hidden heavy breath.
Kakashi poofed away and Sasuke opened his mouth. "Then I'm going home." And he started walking away. Sakura tried to stop him but he put her down by saying that she was just as bad as Naruto, if not worse.
Sakura looked like her life had ended. She was clearly distraught, but Naruto didn't pick up on that. "Sakura-chan! Forget Sasuke, time to train!"
Aoshi took another approach. He walked up to Sakura and placed a hand on her shoulder. She turned around with rage on her face, clearly expecting it to be Naruto but before she got a word out her face flushed.
With a gentle voice, Aoshi tried to soothe her. "Are you okay, Sakura chan?" Her eyes sparkled as they looked into his violet ones. She mumbled dreamily "You even have violet eyes.."
He smiled and nodded before putting one arm over her shoulder to lead her back towards Naruto. She didn't refuse but then they heard a small kid yell "Naruto, he's stealing your girlfriend!"
That got Sakura right back to rage as she walked over and punched Naruto hard in the face. The small kid, who Aoshi now recognized as Sarutobi Konohamaru, the third Hokage's grandson, yelled out in response. "You ugly bitch!"
That got him a nasty punch to the head as well before Sakura started walking away with furious stomps. Konohamaru just couldn't shut up though. "Damn it, that ugly huge forehead, is that really a girl? Seriously, bro?"
That got her to turn around and chase the group. Completely forgetting about Aoshi's presence, but also forgetting Sasuke's earlier comments.
Konohamaru and Naruto ran away, but sadly Konohamaru ran right into another ninja. When Aoshi saw his forehead protector, he knew it meant trouble. So he sighed deeply.
"That hurt, snotface!" Said the guy who picked him up by his collar. The guy was covered in all black clothes and had odd lines drawn on his face. On the back of the guy was some kind of person or puppet. Considering the reputation of Sunagakure, which the guy was clearly from, it was probably a puppet strapped to his back. Aoshi decided to watch to begin with. He'd intervene if necessary but he had to try and figure out who these people were.
Sakura began apologising and Aoshi only just now saw a girl step out from behind the aggressive suna-guy. "Knock it off, you're gonna get me into trouble as well." Aoshi inspected her. It was a very fit girl, clear muscles showing on her legs, which Aoshi really appreciated when many kunoichi were like Sakura and tried to be as skinny as possible. She clearly had an attitude considering the way she spoke to the other guy. She wore a fishnet under a strange coat. Her face was rather round but her hair stood out in four ponytails.
"Put him down you big ape!" Naruto burst out and started running into action. Aoshi could guess what would happen so he extended his senses. Two people were standing by, just watching what was going on. One was Sasuke who sat in a nearby tree. The other was..a bit different. His chakra was immense and it felt weird in all sorts of ways. Aoshi was surprised other people around didn't feel his bloodlust.
He looked back at the scene only to see Naruto fall over from the suna-guy's chakra threads. That was a nice confirmation that the guy was a puppeteer.
The guy turned even more arrogant "Is that the best Konoha's genin can do?!"
Aoshi took in the two's appearance, and added the third one he sensed to the facts. That was when he remembered people with similar description and could only be rather annoyed. These were the Kazekage's children. It all fit. They were the right age, he was going to send them over for the exam, one was a puppeteer, one was a blonde girl and one had one heck of a bloodlust. Aoshi had to intervene.
He saw that the suna-guy was about to punch Konohamaru and made his move. Simultaneously, Sasuke probably figured the same thing and threw a rock. Aoshi used the shunshin to suddenly end up right where he wanted. He grabbed the rock in the air and sucked the chakra out of the suna-guy's arm so he let go of Konohamaru. He instantly swapped hands to let the chakra go back so they wouldn't figure out precisely what he was doing. It mainly felt like a shock to the system if he did it quickly.
Konohamaru fell to the ground and all eyes were on Sasuke and Aoshi. Sasuke clicked his tongue "Why'd you save that bastard? What are they doing here anyway?"
Aoshi raised an eyebrow as Konohamaru ran back to Naruto. Aoshi let go of the arm he held before. "These are our guests Sasuke. They may have been abusing their rights but let's not go straight to violence."
The suna-guy clearly didn't agree since he took out his wrapped package from his back. Aoshi just looked to the tree where the third one he felt earlier had now stood up. "Why don't we wait for your comrade to join us before making hasty decisions?"
That had both of the ones in front of him freeze up. A deathly cold voice came from the trees. "Kankuro, stop it."
Looking at the guy, his descriptions didn't do him justice. The kid looked even younger than he was but his eyes told a different story. The impression you got from this kid wasn't so much about his appearance as it was about his whole aura. He reeked of death.
"Losing control of yourself in a battle. How pathetic. Why do you think we came to the leaf village?" The former arrogant big guy was now faltering and had lost all animosity. "Listen Gaara, they started it."
"Shut up. I'll kill you" and judging from his tone, he would.
They instantly started apologising and Gaara looked straight at Aoshi. In the same cold voice as before, he spoke. "Sorry to you people."
Aoshi smiled at the kid "I'm not the one who deserves an apology. I just stopped this from becoming a larger scandal than it had to be."
Gaara raised an eyebrow to say 'Explain'. And Aoshi did. "I mean imagine what kind of reputation you'd get if it got out that the Kazekage's three children attacked the third Hokage's grandson. A grandson who still has years left in the academy. That there is a political disaster if I've ever seen one. He's rather well liked in this village I'll have you know."
Gaara glared even harder at his brother and jumped down to the ground next to them. Aoshi remained where he was, but the rest took a step back. Even the sister.
A moment later, Kankuro took a step forward and apologised to Konohamaru directly. "I'm sorry."
Aoshi nodded. Gaara kept reprimanding his siblings. "We may have gotten here early but we didn't come here to play around. Let's go."
But as soon as they turned around, Sakura stopped them. "Hey wait! You guys are from the hidden sand then?" They turned around and Gaara nodded.
"You may be allies with the village but it is forbidden for foreign shinobis to enter each other's villages without permission. Even if you are the Kazekage's children. State your purpose and we'll act accordingly."
Aoshi gave Sakura a deadpan look. First of all, she should know why they're there. Second of all, she wouldn't be able to act on her threat and everyone knew it.
"Talk about clueless.." The sister said, and took out her pass. "Don't you know anything?"
Aoshi walked up to her and took the pass. "Explain to them while I inspect this, alright? We have to be on the safe side, correct?" And Aoshi winked at the girl he now knew was named Temari.
She was surprisingly flustered but continued on as if she wasn't. She explained the process of chunin exams and why there would be ninjas from other villages showing up. While she was doing so, Aoshi looked her up and down and pretended to examine her pass. After the first second, he knew it was legit already. When she was done, he handed it back to her. Naruto was shouting in the background about how he should enter.
"Temari huh? Beautiful name." She accepted it back with a slight redness forming on her cheeks. "Thanks. May I know yours?"
"Rokushō Aoshi, at your service. Hit me up if you want a guide around here. Though maybe it should wait until after the exams, I'm sort of stuck with the blonde kid until then."
She was clearly discomforted by the mention of after the exams, Aoshi filed that away for later. At this moment, Sasuke jumped down from his tree. "Hey you! What's your name?"
Temari pointed at herself and said in a glad tone. "Huh? You mean me?" But of course he didn't, he meant Gaara.
Before Aoshi left her side, he leaned in to whisper. "Don't bother with him. He's never shown any interest in girls so far, if you know what I mean." Her eyes widened and Aoshi walked over to Naruto again as Sasuke finished his conversation with Gaara.
The cold voice rang out once more. "What about you? What's your name?" Aoshi didn't need to look back to know it was directed at him but he waved it off. He didn't want to associate with such a sinister kid. "Ask your sister."
It was now Naruto's turn to shout. "Hey! What about me? HUH?" But Gaara wasn't interested and they left.
Suddenly Aoshi felt three people get close to the situation. He noticed them during their talk but now they were so close others should notice them as well. He had no idea who it was, and decided not to bother himself with it.
Aoshi tried soothing Naruto a bit but he was still sulking about being less interesting than everyone else the next morning.
