Chapter 71: Chapter 71: Danzo and Jiraiya’s Invitation
Obito stormed into the Hokage's office, his voice filled with urgency as he questioned:
"Hokage Grandpa, why did you sign a peace treaty with Iwagakure—uh…"
Before he could finish, he realized there were other guests in the room.
Shimura Danzo?!
It was Obito's first time seeing the man many referred to as "The Shinobi of Darkness." His curiosity got the better of him, and he took a longer look.
Why does this old guy keep his eyes closed all the time? He kinda looks like that singer. Is he channeling his inner rock star?
The Third Hokage gave Obito a helpless look and said,
"Obito, my boy, Grandpa has his reasons for making this decision…"
Danzo let out a cold scoff, his eyes narrowing slightly as he interjected,
"Hiruzen, you're too soft. Even a brat like him has more backbone than you do."
"If they dare to invade Konoha, we should cut off a hand to make them remember. Your leniency undermines Konoha's standing as the number one hidden village!"
Danzo's words lit a fire in Obito. Despite the man's controversial reputation, there was something undeniably compelling about him. If only he didn't have a habit of gouging out Sharingan eyes and stabbing allies in the back, he might actually be a hero.
The Third Hokage sighed and waved off the ANBU ninja attempting to enter the room. In a somber tone, he said,
"You don't understand… None of you understand…"
As Konoha's leader, Hiruzen Sarutobi had to think beyond immediate conflicts, looking far into the future.
(Those who achieve great things plan for a century, while those who achieve small things plan for the moment.)
Konoha, weary from war, was suffering from a severe loss of talent. Another drawn-out conflict could devastate the village. Instead of clinging to pride, it was wiser to endure for the sake of future generations.
Konoha had many young shinobi with outstanding potential: Obito, Kakashi, Asuma, Guy, Shisui… In time, they would become the village's pillars. But if the war dragged on, these bright futures could be snuffed out on the battlefield. That was a fate Hiruzen was determined to prevent.
Turning his back to the others, the Third Hokage said,
"Leave. Both of you. My decision is final."
Obito left the Hokage's office, frustrated. What made it worse was that Danzo walked out alongside him, staring intently.
"Hmm. Uchiha Obito, is it?" Danzo said with a dry chuckle.
"I've heard of your accomplishments—quite extraordinary. If you're interested, you could join my Root. Together, we'll make Konoha stronger."
Obito forced a polite but insincere smile.
"Thank you for the offer, but I'll think about it."
Danzo nodded without pressing further, tapping his cane as he walked away.
As Danzo's figure receded, Obito muttered to himself,
Like hell I'd join your shady organization. You waste ten Sharingan in a single day while Kakashi's been making do with just one for years. Is the Uchiha clan cursed to owe you a debt or something?
And Shakumo… I'll settle that score with you eventually!
Obito wandered aimlessly through Konoha, lost in thought. He was too young to understand the Third Hokage's reasoning. All he knew was that his friends had died, and Iwagakure hadn't paid the price.
A flicker of darkness appeared in Obito's eyes as a troubling thought crept in:
Maybe I should take matters into my own hands. With my current abilities, I could leave Iwagakure with a scar they'll never forget.
Licking his dry lips, Obito muttered,
"Should I… really do it?"
As he mulled over the idea, a towering figure suddenly appeared in front of him, blocking his path.
"Wha—?!" Obito yelped, nearly phasing through the figure in reflex.
Looking up, he saw a familiar face: white hair, red facial markings, and a forehead protector with the kanji for "oil."
Obito's mouth fell open in shock.
"J-Jiraiya-sama?!"
Jiraiya grinned broadly, his voice booming with confidence.
"Yep, that's me! The legendary Toad Sage, known far and wide as one of the Sannin—Jiraiya!"
Obito's eye twitched.
Seriously, Jiraiya-san, do you not feel embarrassed spouting all that about yourself?
Jiraiya mistook Obito's silence for awe and struck a triumphant pose.
"You're Minato's student, right? He must've told you about me."
Obito nodded quickly.
"Yes, Minato-sensei said you were his teacher. He also said that aside from being a little unreliable and, uh, pervy, you're actually a pretty great person."
Jiraiya coughed awkwardly, his grin faltering.
"That brat Minato… Does he tell you everything?"
Obito couldn't help but smirk at the success of his playful jab. Then, a thought struck him.
"Jiraiya-sama, why are you back in Konoha? Are you here to see Minato-sensei?"
Jiraiya wagged a finger.
"No, no, no! I'm here for you, Uchiha Obito."
Obito froze, his mind racing.
Wait, what?! Did he somehow find out about my Sexy Jutsu? Is he planning to use me for… research?
Before his thoughts spiraled further, Jiraiya spoke.
"Would you like to sign a summoning contract with Mount Myoboku and train in their sage techniques?"
"...Huh?"
Obito was stunned. Of all the things he expected, being invited to Mount Myoboku wasn't one of them. On one hand, learning Sage Mode was an incredible opportunity. On the other hand… training in sage arts sounded grueling.
Spending years struggling in Mount Myoboku? I'd rather put my energy into solving problems here. Maybe I'll just focus on learning Ryuchi Cave's techniques—it might even take less time.
Noticing Obito's hesitation, Jiraiya was baffled.
How could anyone hesitate over Mount Myoboku's training? People would kill for this chance!
