Chapter 216: Chapter 216: The Death of Ōnoki Reaches the Uchiha Clan

Chapter 216: The Death of Ōnoki Reaches the Uchiha Clan

Unlike the tense atmosphere at the Hokage's office or Root headquarters, Fugaku's home was bustling with activity.

Sasuke leaned on the windowsill, pouting as he watched clansmen come and go. He huffed in frustration, puffing out his cheeks.

His father had promised to teach him chakra refinement today, but instead, he was busy with other matters.

"What's wrong, my dear little brother? Why the sour face?"

Itachi entered Sasuke's room, pushing the door open gently.

The elders had come to discuss an urgent clan matter with Fugaku, so Itachi, like Sasuke, had been sent upstairs by their mother.

"Nii-san!"

Sasuke's pout instantly gave way to a smile as he turned to his brother. Grabbing the hem of Itachi's pants, he complained, "Father promised to teach me chakra refinement this morning, but then he totally forgot about me!"

He looked up at Itachi with wide, hopeful eyes. "Nii-san, why don't you teach me instead?"

Itachi hesitated briefly before tapping Sasuke lightly on the forehead with his fingers.

"Forgive me, Sasuke. Next time, I promise."

Itachi's refusal wasn't because he didn't want to help his brother. He, too, was curious about the clan meeting downstairs. All the elders had gathered, which was highly unusual. He wanted to overhear their conversation to find out what was going on, and Sasuke's room, located above the living room, was the perfect vantage point.

"Again with that excuse! You always do this!" Sasuke huffed, crossing his arms. "And you always poke my forehead like that! Who did you even learn that from?"

Itachi chuckled awkwardly, recalling his childhood. "From your uncle, Haneda."

"Haneda? Uchiha Haneda? Is that the person Father talks about all the time?"

As Sasuke asked his question, the voices from the living room below reached Itachi's ears. He immediately quieted, focusing intently on the conversation.

Seeing his brother suddenly ignoring him, Sasuke huffed again, pouting in annoyance.

**The Living Room Below**

In the living room, Fugaku and the Uchiha elders sat in a solemn circle. These were the highest-ranking figures of the clan, each holding considerable influence.

After a few polite greetings, the head elder broke the silence.

"Clan Leader, have you heard the latest news about Lord Haneda?"

"News? What news?" Fugaku asked, his brow furrowing in confusion.

He hadn't left home that morning, as he'd planned to teach Sasuke chakra refinement. Whatever had happened regarding Haneda, he was unaware of it.

The elder sighed inwardly but maintained a calm expression. With a faint smile, he began explaining.

"It's about Lord Haneda. A week ago, he announced in the Land of Waves that he intended to return to Konoha and succeed as the Fifth Hokage."

"Today, he accomplished something monumental," the elder continued, his tone reverent. "He assassinated the Third Tsuchikage, Ōnoki, in the Land of Earth."

Hearing this, Fugaku's expression turned serious.

"The details aren't fully clear yet," the elder admitted. "But it seems Haneda successfully escaped after completing the assassination. His bounty increased by a staggering 100 million ryō just this morning."

Another elder chimed in enthusiastically.

"Yes, after Lord Haneda killed Ōnoki, Iwagakure immediately sued for peace. It's almost certain the information is accurate."

The elder leaned forward, his voice brimming with confidence.

"From now on, neither the Third Hokage nor that old schemer Danzo will dare target the Uchiha anymore. Even the ANBU that used to monitor us have withdrawn."

Fugaku smiled faintly but couldn't suppress the worry gnawing at him.

Assassinating a Tsuchikage in the Land of Earth was no small feat. Iwagakure would undoubtedly lock down its borders and launch a massive manhunt. Could Haneda really make it back safely?

At that moment, a familiar orange cat leapt gracefully onto the windowsill, carrying a letter in its mouth.

The elders, who had been lauding Haneda moments ago, fell silent as soon as they saw his summoning beast.

Fugaku stood and walked to the kitchen, retrieving a box of dried fish. Placing it in front of the cat, he spoke softly.

"Here, your promised reward."

As the orange cat eagerly devoured the fish, Fugaku picked up the letter and unfolded it.

The elders sat tensely, their anticipation almost palpable.

After a while, Fugaku set the letter down, a smile tugging at his lips.

"Haneda will be back soon," he said simply.

The head elder couldn't hold back his curiosity. "Clan Leader, what exactly did Lord Haneda do in the Land of Earth?"

"Hmm... he didn't say much," Fugaku replied, glancing at the letter again.

"He mentioned killing Ōnoki in front of Iwagakure's forces."

"What?!"

The elders stared at Fugaku in shock.

That single sentence revealed far more than they had anticipated.

They had assumed Haneda assassinated Ōnoki covertly, but to do it openly, in front of Iwagakure's forces?

Ōnoki, as the commander of Iwagakure's wartime operations, would have been surrounded by elite guards, including ANBU operatives. There would have been no fewer than 3,000 ninja stationed near him, given the scale of their military preparations.

For Haneda to not only kill Ōnoki under such circumstances but also escape unscathed was a feat beyond imagination.

The elders now understood everything.

Why had the ANBU withdrawn their surveillance on the Uchiha?

Why had Iwagakure suddenly sued for peace?

The answer was clear: Haneda's overwhelming strength had instilled fear in both Iwagakure and Konoha's leadership.

Upstairs, Itachi, who had been eavesdropping, processed the implications of the conversation.

Haneda planned to return to Konoha to run for Hokage.

Haneda had single-handedly crushed Iwagakure's forces and killed their Tsuchikage, Ōnoki.

Even the Third Hokage and his advisors now feared the Uchiha.

Itachi pondered these developments deeply, deciding to inform Shisui.

The tension between the Uchiha and Konoha's leadership was already high, and Haneda's return would undoubtedly ignite further conflict.

Danzo, in particular, would not allow an Uchiha to ascend to the Hokage position.

Itachi could sense the storm brewing. With the clan's growing resentment and Haneda's ambitions, a coup seemed inevitable.

But to Itachi and Shisui, a coup wasn't the answer.

Only a leader respected by all could truly become Hokage.

Meanwhile, Haneda had sent his letter to Fugaku and moved on to other priorities. He was currently focused on taking care of Uzumaki Furin, Karin's mother.

Furin's health was in a dire state, far worse than Karin's. She could barely walk without assistance and was confined to bed most of the time.

Haneda had contacted Pakura and was attempting to reach Tsunade for help. Once Pakura's team arrived, Haneda entrusted Furin's care to the organization's members and prepared to leave for the Land of Wind with Haku, Kimimaro, and Pakura.

Since Karin's *Kagura's Mind Eye* ability was unique and couldn't be replicated through the *All-Creation Technique,* Haneda decided to bring her along to help her unlock its potential.

However, on the way to the Land of Wind, Haneda encountered an unexpected child who stood in his path.
