Chapter 5: Chapter 5: The Center Who Defied Expectations
Dean Smith Center – University of North Carolina
The crowd at the Dean Smith Center sat in stunned silence, their cheers from moments ago replaced by a collective gasp. The sight of shattered glass and a hanging rim loomed over the court like an unspoken challenge.
"W-what just happened?" one fan stammered.
"That big guy… the Asian player… did he just smash the backboard?"
"Yes, he did! And he didn't even take off his jacket!"
Replay screens throughout the arena captured Alex Mo's warm-up dunk in slow motion. From the half-court dribble to the free-throw-line windmill dunk that ended with shattered glass, the sequence replayed again and again.
Even Vince Carter, North Carolina's rising star, looked toward teammate Antoine Jamison with disbelief.
"Did he really just…?" Vince asked.
Jamison pointed at the screen. "He did. But pay attention to where he jumped from and how easy he made it look. That's not normal."
Georgetown's Confidence
On Georgetown's bench, Alex's teammates were still riding the high from his destructive dunk.
"Haha! Did you see their faces?" Jerome Williams laughed.
"North Carolina fans probably thought Vince Carter was impressive until Alex broke their hoop!" another player added, waving a towel.
Allen Iverson, dressed in his usual hip-hop style on the sideline, leaned toward Alex. "Keep that energy going, man. Let's make sure they never forget this game."
Alex smiled slightly. "Don't worry, I'm just getting started."
The Warm-Up Ends
The game was delayed as North Carolina staff scrambled to install a new backboard. With improved shatter resistance, they were confident it would survive the rest of the game—though not without wary glances toward Alex.
Dean Smith, North Carolina's legendary coach, huddled his players together.
"Listen up," Smith said. "This game might be a warm-up, but I don't want it to end in failure. Antawn, Vince, I need you to set the tone."
Vince Carter nodded confidently. "Coach, don't worry. Dunks don't win games."
The Game Begins
With the new hoop installed, the warm-up concluded, and the tip-off was set.
Alex stood at the center circle, staring down his much shorter opponent. The referee tossed the ball into the air, and Alex didn't just win the jump he launched it far into Georgetown's backcourt, creating an immediate fast-break opportunity.
But Alex didn't stay put after the jump. He sprinted toward the basket with a speed that shocked everyone in the arena.
"Pass the ball!" Iverson shouted from the bench.
The Georgetown point guard, stunned by Alex's burst of speed, hurriedly lobbed the ball toward him.
Alex caught it effortlessly, his massive hands gripping the ball like it was a grapefruit. With a single step into the paint, he leapt high, dunking the ball with both hands.
BANG!
The rim swayed violently as Alex released it and landed gracefully.
Georgetown's bench erupted in cheers, led by Iverson.
"That's how you start a game!" Iverson yelled, pumping his fists.
North Carolina's Reaction
The Dean Smith Center was silent again, its crowd struggling to process what they'd just witnessed.
"Did their center just do that?" a fan muttered.
"He's as fast as a guard!" another replied.
North Carolina's players exchanged uneasy glances. They weren't used to seeing someone of Alex's size move like that.
"Calm down, everyone," Vince Carter said, stepping up as the team's leader. "The world's big. There are bound to be a few freak athletes like him. But games aren't decided by one dunk."
Vince's confidence was reassuring, but deep down, he knew this wasn't going to be an ordinary matchup.
The Showdown
As the game progressed, it became clear that this was no typical warm-up. Georgetown leaned heavily on Alex, using him as the focal point of both offense and defense. Meanwhile, North Carolina relied on their dynamic duo of Vince Carter and Antawn Jamison to counter.
But Alex wasn't just dominating he was redefining what a big man could do on the court. His speed, agility, and power overwhelmed his opponents, leaving both players and fans in awe.
By halftime, the score was close, but Georgetown had the edge.
On the sideline, Vince Carter watched Alex with a determined expression.
"I need to dunk on him," Vince muttered to himself.
Jamison overheard and chuckled. "You think one dunk will change anything?"
Vince smirked. "It's not about one dunk. It's about changing the momentum. Watch me."
