Chapter 96: A Path to Life
Translator: Cinder Translations
--------
When Jiang Cheng and the Fatty sneakily arrived on the fourth floor and pushed open the door to the music classroom, the sight before them startled them.
From the outside, the room appeared pitch dark, but inside it was shrouded in a faint halo of light, the shifting shadows creating a dreamy and eerie atmosphere.
Swallowing hard, Fatty's gaze extended deeper into the classroom.
That was the source of the light.
The entire wallpaper had been violently torn down, trampled on the floor, exposing a massive mirror behind it.
Light streamed from the mirror, illuminating the entire classroom.
The two couldn't help but widen their eyes slightly.
Inside the mirror, a grand performance was underway.
At the front of the stage stood a girl on her toes, tall and slender, her dance ethereal and lively, surrounded by more than ten partners who moved awkwardly and briskly alongside her, crowding around her.
The most bizarre thing was that there was no sound at all.
It was like a silent film from years ago.
Compared to the leading girl, the dancers' movements were clearly unsatisfactory.
Especially one middle-aged man with a large belly, whose massive size made one wonder if he might crush his strained feet.
The moment he turned around, Fatty's pupils shrank sharply.
Zhou Taifu.
The blood on his chin had already dried, but the huge wound was still shocking to behold.
Fatty turned his stiff neck and scanned the faces one by one; each of them once a vibrant visage; Now appeared as withered as a ghost's.
The woman in the cheongsam, Long Tao, Luo Yi, Zhen Jianren, Zhou Taifu, and... Zhang Yinyin!
Zhang Yinyin was already dead.
So the remaining person was self-evident.
But at this moment, no one was entangled by that anymore because they saw that Yu Wen was sitting in the audience, acting as one of the two guests.
The other was Su Yu, drenched in blood.
Of course, they too were in the mirrored world.
That world from ten years ago.
Fatty's mouth trembled for a long time before he managed to squeeze out a relatively complete sentence, "This... this is the real third rehearsal."
It wasn't a questioning tone; he could already be sure.
Jiang Cheng stared at the bizarre performance in the mirror. After a few seconds, he lifted his leg and walked up.
After a moment of hesitation, Fatty chose to follow closely behind him.
As Jiang Cheng reached out and touched the mirror, an incredible scene unfolded.
The mirror broke like the surface of water, and the next second, his body appeared within the mirror.
Fatty followed suit, gritting his teeth and diving in.
When he opened his eyes, he was astonished to see the surroundings; the setup here was vastly different from the music classroom, but upon closer inspection, one could still see the basic framework of both rooms was consistent.
The music classroom had indeed been renovated from the dance classroom after that incident.
Who would have thought that just a mirror apart, two segments of time separated by ten years lay in between.
Yu Wen also noticed these two uninvited guests, her face gradually turning ugly.
It was unclear whether Su Yu still harbored any illusions; upon seeing Jiang Cheng and Fatty appear out of thin air, he began making muffled sounds.
His mouth was almost devoid of teeth, having been nearly knocked out by Yu Wen; had it not been for a rag stuffed in his mouth to staunch the bleeding, he probably wouldn't have lasted this long.
It wasn't that Yu Wen was particularly cruel; she simply couldn't be bothered to waste energy on a dying man. Su Yu was simply too restless.
After seeing that familiar face appear in the mirror, he seemed possessed, struggling wildly and even attempting to bite Yu Wen's neck.
Feigning surprise at just discovering Yu Wen, Jiang Cheng quietly slipped over. "Miss Yu," he said, propping himself on a nearby seat with a small but unmistakably excited tone, "It's so good to see you here."
He glanced at Yu Wen's severed arm, his expression suddenly pausing. "Your hand…"
"It's nothing," Yu Wen replied. "Mr. Hao, it's great that you two could make it; I was afraid you…"
The two exchanged polite small talk, one speaking after the other.
Fatty, uninterested in their little performance yet too afraid to stare at the eerie spectacle on stage, could only glare at the barely alive Su Yu.
Thinking about Su Yu's actions made Fatty angrier, and he approached and delivered a fierce smack to his head.
"Buzz!"
A strange trembling sound suddenly echoed in the previously silent space, scaring Fatty so much he thought the smack had caused it.
A faint ghostly light flickered, and a door appeared out of nowhere in the back of the stage.
A thin mist wafted before the door.
Jiang Cheng squinted his eyes, faintly able to see that it was a pure black iron door.
It was at this moment that they noticed the "actors" on stage had all ceased their movements, turning their backs to them. The scene, rendered through the play of light and shadow, was indescribably strange.
But thankfully, the girl at the forefront—no, more precisely, it should be Chen Yao.
She remained motionless.
Standing quietly in the center of the stage, she seemed to be waiting for something.
As for what it was, Fatty didn't know. He guessed perhaps Jiang Cheng understood, but given the current situation, it wasn't a good time to ask.
"Mr. Hao," Yu Wen tilted her head to look at Jiang Cheng, "The door has appeared."
"Hmm, I'm waiting for you, Miss Yu," Jiang Cheng replied, nodding earnestly, his face full of sincerity. "My parents taught me to prioritize ladies first."
Fatty looked at Jiang Cheng: "???"
Yu Wen took a deep breath; they all knew this was the most dangerous moment. To reach the iron door, they would have to pass by this group of clearly unfriendly "actors."
The path to the door would not be smooth, but the path to life lay before them, and she had to try no matter what.
Yu Wen yanked Su Yu, dragging him along the ground. "Mr. Hao, I hope you don't mind me bringing this guy along," she said, stepping back slightly to distance herself from Jiang Cheng and Fatty.
"Of course," Jiang Cheng generously extended his hand, "Please, Miss Yu."
The blood flowing from Su Yu left a thick mark on the floor, like a large brushstroke.
Yu Wen managed to keep some attention on Jiang Cheng behind her, but once she stepped onto the stage, facing these once vibrant people who had their backs to her.
She realized just how terrifying it was.
She passed one person after another; the door grew closer, with only Chen Yao left standing in her way.
Su Yu was so scared he looked like he might die; his eyes bulged, his limbs went limp, yet he couldn't make any sound.
"Thud—"
Yu Wen threw Su Yu behind Chen Yao, who was turned away from her.
In the next second, to her delight, an incredible scene unfolded: Chen Yao staggered and disappeared right before her eyes.
Along with her vanished Su Yu, who had collapsed on the ground.
As expected!
Finding out the truth and bringing Su Yu to the former dance classroom to hand him over to Chen Yao was the hidden path to life in this mission.
The door was within reach.
But after the initial excitement, Yu Wen suddenly stopped in her tracks, a hint of unhidden resentment slowly surfacing in her eyes.
"As long as I can survive and leave this shithole, it's fine."
