NIGHTMARE : underneath the surface

Chapter 4: The past that linger

CHAPTER FOUR

The past that linger

The next morning, I woke up to find my father emerging from his room, only to discover the maids gathered around the broken glass on the kitchen floor. A drop of blood glistened near the shards, leading a trail to my room. Concern etched on his face, he ordered the maids to clean up the mess, his mind racing with worry for me.

Meanwhile, I dressed for work, the remnants of fear still clinging to me. I pushed the thoughts of the nightmare aside, determined to face the day. As I arrived at the office, I spotted Diva waving at me, her smile bright against the dull backdrop of the workplace.

I had made a decision. I would finally tell her the truth: I didn't have feelings for her. But before I could gather my thoughts, Diva approached me, her expression shifting from cheerful to apologetic. "I am so sorry I didn't mean to do that yesterday," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "I know you don't like me, even though I had a crush on you since our days in high school. I knew you loved Helen, not me."

Her words struck a chord within me. I remembered the day the bullies had taken a life, the day that had shattered my world and birthed my nightmares. Diva hadn't even gained admission to school when it happened.

Looking at her, I softened. "It's okay," I said, offering her a reassuring smile. We exchanged a moment of understanding, a silent acknowledgment of our shared past, before we went our separate ways.
