NIGHTMARE : underneath the surface

Chapter 8: AM I GOING CRAZY

CHAPTER EIGHT: AM I GOING CRAZY

That night, the nightmares returned with a vengeance, more vivid and terrifying than ever before. I found myself trapped in a distorted version of my high school, where every familiar corner was cloaked in an oppressive darkness. The air was thick with dread, suffocating and heavy. Suddenly, the ghost loomed before me, its hollow eyes piercing through the shadows, filled with an unsettling hunger. I tried to run, but my legs felt leaden, as if burdened by the weight of past traumas.

Without warning, the ghost lunged at me, brandishing a knife that glinted ominously in the dim light. A sharp pain pierced my side, and I gasped, looking up to see my mother, tears streaming down her face, her expression a mask of anguish. "Alex!" she cried, her voice echoing in the void, resonating with my deepest fears.

Just then, I spotted Helen racing toward me, her hand outstretched in desperation. "Hold on, Alex!" she shouted, but the encroaching darkness enveloped me, and I felt myself slipping away, as if the very ground was swallowing me whole.

The blaring of my alarm jolted me awake, my heart racing wildly. I sat upright in bed, drenched in sweat, the remnants of the nightmare clinging to me like a shroud. Glancing around my room, I noticed the shadows dancing ominously in the corners, and for a fleeting moment, an unsettling sensation washed over me—someone was watching.

My eyes fell to the floor, and I gasped in horror. There were stains that resembled blood, as if someone had wandered through my room, leaving a trail of crimson in their wake. Panic surged through me, and just then, my brother Anthony burst into the room without knocking.

"Are you okay?" he asked, concern etched on his face.

I scrambled back, pointing frantically at the floor. "Look! There's blood!" I exclaimed, my voice trembling with fear.

Anthony frowned, looking down but seeing nothing. "Alex, there's nothing there. You're just having another episode, aren't you?"

His words stung, igniting a wave of frustration within me. "No! I swear I saw it!" But deep down, a gnawing doubt began to creep in, and I wondered if perhaps he was right.
