Chapter 40: Trials of the Eternal Glade
The journey to the Eternal Glade took them over dense forests, rolling hills, and rivers that shimmered under the sunlight. As they flew, the melody grew louder, its haunting beauty guiding them like a beacon.
By the third day, they reached a clearing bathed in perpetual twilight. The air was thick with magic, and the trees around the glade shimmered as though made of glass. In the center of the glade stood a massive tree, its roots twisting into the earth like the veins of the world itself.
"This must be the place," One Kick Man said, dismounting Zephyr.
The pendant's glow intensified, casting a warm light over the glade. As they approached the tree, the melody stopped, replaced by a voice—soft yet commanding.
"Guardian and seeker, you stand at the edge of truth. To proceed, you must prove your worth through the trials of the Eternal Glade."
The ground beneath them shifted, and three paths appeared, each leading in a different direction.
"The Trial of Courage lies to the left, the Trial of Wisdom to the right, and the Trial of Heart straight ahead. Choose wisely, for each path will test the bond between you."
One Kick Man glanced at Zephyr. "Looks like we've got some work to do. Which one should we tackle first?"
Zephyr pawed the ground, his gaze fixed on the path ahead.
"Heart, huh?" One Kick Man said with a nod. "Alright, let's do it."
They followed the middle path, which led to a clearing surrounded by mirrors. As they stepped inside, the mirrors came to life, reflecting not just their images but memories—moments of triumph, fear, and doubt.
The voice returned: "To pass the Trial of Heart, you must face your greatest fear and emerge united."
The mirrors shimmered, and the clearing dissolved into a battlefield. One Kick Man found himself surrounded by shadowy figures—faceless warriors wielding dark blades. Zephyr stood beside him, his wings flared in defiance.
One Kick Man clenched his fists. "Let's show them what we're made of."
The figures attacked, their movements swift and relentless. One Kick Man fought with his usual strength and precision, but for every enemy he struck down, two more appeared. Zephyr unleashed blasts of wind, but the shadows seemed endless.
"These things don't quit," One Kick Man muttered, wiping sweat from his brow.
Suddenly, one of the shadows lunged at Zephyr, striking him down. The steed let out a pained cry, and the battlefield shifted.
"No!" One Kick Man shouted, rushing to Zephyr's side. The shadows surrounded them, their blades poised to strike.
The pendant flared brightly, its light forming a barrier around them.
The voice returned, softer now: "The heart of a guardian is not measured by strength alone, but by the willingness to protect what they hold dear."
The shadows dissolved, and the battlefield faded. They were back in the glade, the mirrors silent and still.
"You okay, buddy?" One Kick Man asked, kneeling beside Zephyr.
The steed nuzzled him gently, his strength returning.
"You passed the Trial of Heart," the voice said. "But the journey is far from over. Prepare yourselves for the next trial."
The path leading back to the massive tree appeared once more.
"One down," One Kick Man said, helping Zephyr to his feet. "Two to go."
As they returned to the tree, the melody resumed, stronger now, as if encouraging them to continue.
To be continued....
