Chapter 50: Chapter 50: Missed Opportunity
Rim had already dealt with his opponent and was now watching Jack's fight from the sidelines.
When he saw Jack's violent moves, the corner of his mouth twitched involuntarily. Watching him stomp Raul's head like it was nothing, and then stride over to him, Rim's heart thumped in alarm.
The key was Jack's eyes. Whenever he got angry, they turned bloodshot, adding to his already terrifying appearance—razor-sharp teeth, bloodied body, and a face that looked far too mature for his age. He resembled a demon out for blood.
Rim made a swift decision right then and there: forget about challenging Jack back on Onigashima. Revenge? Sure, but he'd play it safe and stick to being his subordinate. If he could beat him, fine, but if he lost? Knowing Jack's temperament, he'd likely end up torn to shreds.
And where could he even complain about that? Rim sighed, thinking about his small harem of wives and his not-so-small, questionably male partner, who was bound to become a stunning woman someday. No way was he letting any of that go to waste.
Meanwhile, Jack was frustrated. This guy Raul—missing a leg and all—was still stronger than Lauren, the fighter from the port.
They were too far from the port to earn any "ship rewards." Jack had thought about recruiting Raul, but things had gone south.
Damn it, Kaido. Why'd you have to tear his leg off in the first place? If it weren't for that, I'd have another subordinate right now!
Wait a minute... Lauren? Raul?
"Oh, never mind, then," Jack muttered.
"Rim-sama..."
Master's deep, magnetic voice interrupted Jack's thoughts as he rushed toward Rim. Jack shot Rim a pitying glance.
Poor Rim. Master used to be a woman, but...
Jack shuddered. Even if you two look good as a couple, I can't stomach it.
"Hey, Rim!" Jack's shout jolted Rim back to reality. He quickly shoved Master aside, wincing as he noticed Master's pouting lips. Rim sighed, closing his eyes.
"Uh, sorry. Until you're fully a woman again, let's, uh... keep some distance," he said softly.
"After all, you don't want to change my preferences, do you?"
Master nodded earnestly, grabbing Rim's hand.
"I understand. Don't worry, I'll be careful."
"Boom!"
"You two idiots! Enough already!" Jack barked, veins popping. "I'm still a kid! A kid! Can you stop with the eye contact and hand-holding? Do I need to pour oil on you two to speed things up?!"
Master reluctantly let go of Rim's hand, glaring at Jack.
"Hmph. Such a boring man!"
"What was that? You're a man now too, you know!"
"And what's with that look? Ugh, I've had enough!"
Rim quickly grabbed Jack in a bear hug before he exploded.
"Come on, give me a break! Give me a break! Cough... cough..."
Seeing Rim struggling to catch his breath, Jack hesitated.
Fine, I'll let this slide. Besides, I'll need him to fix up the Kuri region later.
Just then, Holdem returned, riding his giant chicken and dragging the old king behind him.
"Jack-sama," Holdem began, sounding exasperated. "The other two kings got trampled to death by the ostrich, but this old guy managed to survive. Surprisingly quick for his age, and ruthless too. He shoved the others into harm's way."
"Oh, King Henry VI," Master remarked, strolling over. "I suppose the old-timers really do have more tricks up their sleeves."
Jack scrutinized the groveling king before turning to Master. "So this guy is Henry VI of Wetna?"
"Yes," Master replied. "The man you just killed, Raul, was his youngest brother. He has another brother named Lauren. With the two of them, the Wetna Kingdom managed to hold its ground against the Aer Kingdom and Cusa Kingdom alliance."
"Hah! My brother Lauren will avenge me!" Henry VI suddenly barked, emboldened. "You'd better let me go, or—"
Smack!
Jack slapped him hard enough to silence him. "Been a king too long, huh? Made you stupid?"
"Do you think we'd get here without taking out your brother? Oh, and by the way, we already took your palace. Hedarn's the new king now, and he'll take good care of your queen and your son's five concubines too. So don't worry—they're in good hands!"
"Holdem, kill him. He's useless now."
"Wait! Wait!" Henry VI screamed as Holdem raised his blade. "Master! I'll give you my daughters! You can't do this to me!"
Master sneered. "Daughters? Really, you disgusting animal? You murdered her mother in front of her and tried to—ugh."
Crunch!
Jack swung his spiked club, smashing Henry VI's head like a melon. Wiping his weapon on the corpse, Jack muttered, "Enough. You're making me sick."
"These royal types have been living cushy lives too long. It's warped their minds."
Gathering his crew, Jack addressed them seriously.
"Hedarn promised to hand over the Renske port and swear loyalty to the Beasts Pirates. He's shown goodwill, so it's only right we help him out."
"I've decided—we'll crush Cusa and Aer Kingdom for him."
"You!" Jack pointed at a hulking pirate with mismatched eyes. "Go tell Hedarn to get ready."
"Jack-sama, my name's Rune—"
"Yeah, yeah, whatever, just go, Rune."
As Rune stomped off, Jack turned to Master.
"You know the strong fighters in those kingdoms, right? Write it all down for me later."
"Everyone else, dismissed! Go rest at the castle!"
Walking past Raul's corpse, Jack hefted his spiked club with a sigh.
"What a waste. He was so strong. If I'd brought him to the ship, who knows what rewards I'd have gotten?"
"Rewards?" Rim asked, overhearing.
"Oh, nothing. Just thinking if he'd joined the Beasts Pirates, Kaido might've rewarded me."
"Actually, Jack-sama," Rim said, "you could've locked him up on the ship and brought him back to Onigashima. King would've loved dealing with someone like him."
Jack froze. King. That sadist.
Wait. If I'd beaten them half to death and dragged them back to the ship...
Clutching his chest, Jack felt a pang of regret. I really did miss out on a fortune.
