Chapter 136: Chapter 136: The Marines’ Spoilers and Nami's Talent
Luffy sheathed his sword as the pirate ship began to tilt and fall apart.
This ship, too, was mounted on the back of a sea beast, but—
Moo Moo, with its sharp teeth and powerful jaws, snapped the neck of the long-necked sea dragon. Blood sprayed like a fountain into the sky as the massive body of the sea dragon began to sink into the ocean.
Luffy made a few leaps and landed on Moo Moo's head. The sea cow, feeling triumphant, slapped the water, sending massive waves splashing up.
"Hey, stop splashing! Watch out for the ship!" Luffy shouted as he ran along Moo Moo's body toward the Navy vessel that was drifting with the waves.
"The danger's over…" Bellemere clutched the safety rope, stabilizing herself as the girls swayed with the ship's tilt, slowly steadying.
"Unbelievable. Every time I see it, it's amazing—a single person can take down an entire pirate ship…"
"I'm back!" Luffy landed on the ship and flashed a grin.
Moo Moo sank into the water and took hold of the chains, steadying the ship once more.
"That was close. I didn't expect those pirates to have tamed a sea beast. If it had been a larger one, it could have been much worse," Luffy remarked with surprise.
"That was a scare…" Nami wiped the cold sweat from her forehead.
"Heh, that's what adventure is all about! It wouldn't be exciting if it weren't thrilling, right?" Uta giggled as she untied her safety harness.
"Speaking of which, Nami, have you decided where you want to go?" Uta asked.
"Do you guys have anywhere in mind?" Nami glanced at the map.
"Nope," Uta shook her head.
"I'm open to anything," Luffy said, sitting on the edge of the ship.
"In that case, I want to go here!" Nami pointed to an island on the map.
"Golden Island?" Nojiko read the name aloud.
"Yeah! Rumor has it this island is filled with gold. The infamous 'Golden Pirate' Woonan, with a bounty of sixty million Berries, supposedly buried a treasure there that makes up a third of the world's gold," Nami said excitedly.
"That story sounds way too good to be true," Uta chuckled. "How could one person gather a third of the world's gold?"
"But, but, don't you want to know if the island is real? The Navy even labeled it as 'Golden Island' on the map, so there could be something there…" Nami argued.
"Oh… it really does say 'Golden Island.' Maybe I should call and ask about it…" Luffy leaned over, his face close to Nami's.
"That would ruin the fun!" Nami protested.
"But if we get there and find out there's no gold, wouldn't it be a wasted trip?" Nojiko reasoned.
"True…" Nami reluctantly agreed.
"Then let's call and find out," Luffy said, pulling out the Transponder Snail and calling Commodore Pudding Pudding.
"…Golden Island?"
"I'm sorry, but that rumor is fake. Woonan was active in the East Blue and couldn't possibly have that much gold. Our Navy records show that Woonan disappeared on that island. We searched the entire place and found he had died, and his crew disbanded. We named it Golden Island in his honor…"
Commodore Pudding Pudding read through the files.
"Woonan did amass a lot of treasure, but he wasn't really a bad person. He distributed much of his stolen wealth."
"As for the treasure map circulating around the East Blue, it only points to Woonan's gravesite."
"To prevent pirates from disturbing his rest, we even inscribed a warning on his tomb saying, 'No treasure here…'"
As the Navy's voice trailed off from the Transponder Snail, Nami slumped to the ground in disappointment.
"It feels like getting spoiled, but it's better than wasting time on a grave search."
"Hehe…" Luffy chuckled, hanging up the Transponder Snail.
"How about this place?" Uta pointed to another island, Clockwork Island.
"I read in a fashion magazine that they have a beautiful diamond clock there, crafted with the finest gems and craftsmanship."
"Clockwork Island? I heard they have a lot of great items, known for their artisans and technology. But recently, products from there have disappeared from the market," Nami noted.
"Perfect! Let's head there for some shopping!" Luffy decided.
"It's a bit of a trip, Nami. Can you manage the navigation and supplies?" Bellemere asked, patting Nami on the shoulder.
"No problem!"
Nami plotted the shortest route and marked supply points on the map.
With a destination in mind, the ship turned toward Clockwork Island. Thanks to Moo Moo, who knew how to navigate with just a directional cue from Nami, there wasn't much need to steer frequently.
As the ship sailed farther away from the Cocoyasi Village archipelago, Nami returned to updating her maps, while Uta pulled out her fashion magazines, jotting down what she wanted to buy on Clockwork Island—like a music box and a diamond clock…
"Clockwork Island… I wonder if the artisans there could modify this ship. Maybe we could turn it into a mechanized ship…" Luffy mused, intrigued by the gear symbol representing the island.
"Bellemere, I want duck breast with orange sauce for lunch!" Nami said, raising her hand while drawing.
"I want pancakes with whipped cream!" Uta chimed in.
"Oh, I get it. You just brought me along as a cook, didn't you?" Bellemere huffed.
"Hehe, well, Nojiko's still a bit young to make much food, and Luffy's got a huge appetite."
"It's weird—Luffy eats so much, but his belly never sticks out. If a girl ate that much, she'd be totally bloated…" Nami said, eyeing Luffy's stomach.
"It's probably because he exercises so much. The Marines at HQ train like crazy too. I hear they start with thousands of reps…" Bellemere pondered.
Soon, night fell, and Bellemere clapped her hands.
"Alright, kids, time to decide the night watch. Staying alert on the open sea is essential. Who knows what might happen at night…"
"For night watch, let Tyson do it. He's got tons of energy and barely needs sleep."
"That…animal? Can he handle it?" Bellemere questioned.
Hearing her doubt, Tyson, the gorilla, thumped his chest with a roar as if to show he was up for it.
"Okay, okay, I get it. Night watch is yours…" Bellemere laughed, patting his burly arm.
"Plus, as an animal, he's more sensitive to scents. If someone approaches from a ship's blind spot, Tyson will smell it and alert me," Luffy added.
"Wow, sounds like he might be even better than a person…" Bellemere mused.
…
Late at night, Nami lay in bed, listening to the sound of the waves filtering through the closed windows. The ship rocked slightly. It was her first night sleeping on the open sea, and she was anything but calm.
It wasn't just the sound of the waves keeping her awake; it was as if the damp air was trying to tell her something.
The weather was shifting constantly. Storms were gathering, the clouds were pressing down, and heavy rain clouds were forming.
As her skin sensed the air, her brain instinctively began to process the information carried by the wind.
Covering her arms, Nami grew restless. She got out of bed and paced her room, unable to quiet her mind as it subconsciously combined weather knowledge with what she sensed.
After a moment, she gave up and went out onto the deck, adjusting to the dim light as she walked.
On the deck, she noticed a hulking black "mountain" shifting. Two lights suddenly appeared—the gleaming eyes of Tyson.
The gorilla eyed her for a moment before turning away to recline in his chair and peel a banana.
"So annoying… I can't sleep at all," Nami muttered to the gorilla.
"My brain won't stop churning, thinking about… nothing important, really, but there's a storm coming. It'll last four hours, but that doesn't matter…"
The ship was anchored to Moo Moo by iron chains. As a sturdy Navy vessel, it was more like an immovable fortress on the sea, fixed firmly on the back of the enormous sea beast.
Tyson chuffed, his gesture indicating she should look somewhere.
Following his direction, she saw Luffy's room.
Tyson then clasped his hands by his head in a sleep gesture.
"What? You want me to go to Luffy's room?" Nami asked, gripping the hem of her nightdress in confusion.
Tyson then beat his chest and flexed his muscles.
"Strong… big… sleep?"
Nami fumbled to interpret the gorilla's gestures.
Finally, Tyson gave up and lay back on his deck chair, resuming his night watch. She wasn't even sure if he was really staying awake.
Should she go to Luffy's room?
Feeling a bit jittery, she stood in front of his door, her hand raised and then lowered several times in hesitation.
Memories of sleeping beside him, with his reassuring grip that seemed to anchor her, came flooding back. It was like…
It was like he could keep her grounded, even when everything else seemed ready to slip away.
She instinctively recalled the first time she had slept next to Luffy, held tightly by him, feeling a strange yet unshakeable sense of security—just like… just like now.
It was as though she were a lone balloon, drifting aimlessly, at the mercy of the storm, tethered only by a fragile string to the ground below. In her mind, Luffy would always be the one firmly holding onto that string, never letting go.
Nami found herself enveloped in an odd sense of safety. She couldn't quite explain it, but it felt like some kind of energy field surrounded him, making her feel calm, as if just being near him was enough.
She found herself reminiscing about the first time they met. She had nearly stumbled, only to feel someone grab her, steadying her. She looked up, squinting against the noonday sun that shone brightly over his head, catching only glimpses of his features in the glare.
With her heart pounding, Nami slowly opened the door.
"Sorry to intrude…"
She whispered quietly, carefully closing the door behind her. She turned, creeping over to the edge of the bed, and lay down beside him with the utmost caution, not wanting to disturb his sleep—or worse, to be noticed. She lay on her side, watching him quietly.
I'll just wake up early tomorrow and sneak back to my own bed…
She thought to herself.
She listened to her own heartbeat, her gaze landing on his outstretched arm. Without thinking, she rested her head against it.
That strange sense of security washed over her again, as if some invisible shield wrapped around her, shutting out everything else. Her mind slowed, drifting toward rest.
"Goodnight…" she whispered, placing her hand gently over his, and she quickly fell asleep.
What the hell… don't bother me over something like this, you damn Observation Haki—
Luffy opened his eyes in irritation.
As someone with a good routine, he was used to falling asleep around eleven-thirty, no later than midnight. But tonight, something had woken him.
He'd been jarred awake by an unidentifiable, strange sensation—a vague, disturbing sound, like a wave of agitation rippling outwards, drawing closer to him.
Luffy, whose sensory abilities had been triggered multiple times before, instinctively chalked it up to his Observation Haki acting up.
This uncontrollable power, seemingly half-active all the time, would occasionally switch on by itself.
The enhanced awareness it provided was incredible, but without control, it was just a nuisance.
He had mastered Kami-e, so understanding Observation Haki should have been just as easy. But for some reason, this ability wouldn't submit to his command.
This time, it had activated on its own, trying to alert him to something, only to be interrupted by Nami's presence.
In Luffy's mind, it made no sense for Observation Haki to alert him over such trivial matters.
If it's Nami, it's fine—there's no need to disturb my sleep.
Stupid Observation Haki, he muttered in his mind. Just notify me when there's an enemy, or if my life's in danger. That's all I need from you.
Grumbling inwardly, he waited a moment. Once he was sure Nami had fallen asleep, he gently pulled the blanket over her.
Nami shifted in her sleep, curling up like a child, wrapped in warmth and security.
Lightning streaked across the night sky, and rain began to pour down heavily—the storm had arrived.
Nami jolted awake at the sound of thunder. She instinctively curled up, feeling the unfamiliar warmth of a blanket over her. The cozy warmth inside the bed stood in sharp contrast to the chill outside.
Have I been caught? she thought.
This wasn't how she'd left things. When she lay down, the corner of the blanket had been tucked beneath her; even if she
tossed and turned, it wouldn't have covered her completely.
There was only one answer—he'd noticed.
She relaxed, clutching his arm close to her chest, resting her chin against his wrist.
"Goodnight…" she murmured again.
