One Piece:I am King Luffy!

Chapter 144: Chapter 144: The Gentle Breeze

Luffy sat at the bow of the ship, feeling the sea breeze brush across his face. Behind him, Uta was vocalizing, practicing her scales—something music students do to warm up. Nami was holding a book, sitting on a chair with her legs swinging idly as she read.

Luffy took out a Den Den Mushi, thinking for a moment before calling his grandpa.

He told him about the Black Cat Pirates and how their captain, Kuro, turned out to be unexpectedly skilled. Even Luffy had trouble tracking his speed, though Kuro's combat ability was lacking. His moves were largely ineffective, so with Kami-e's skill at detecting air flow, Luffy was able to anticipate Kuro's high-speed movements and force him right into his sword, slicing him in two.

Garp, hearing this, was impressed. The East Blue truly had its surprises—Kuro's technique was almost like a weaker version of the Six Powers' "Soru," though he lacked the control to wield such a technique properly.

"Luffy, you should know how to transfer force by now, right? Focusing it into your legs or hands works the same way," Garp asked.

Luffy responded affirmatively.

"Then it's time to train at a higher level—learning to channel power more precisely, focusing it down to your fingers," Garp explained.

Rokushiki's "Finger Gun" was a technique that concentrated the full force of a bullet-like punch into a single finger. It could pierce flesh with ease, rivaling the impact of a fired bullet.

"Try working on it. Even for you, this kind of precision will take years to master. It's all about control in the fingers, Luffy. Throwing a punch or a kick comes naturally to humans, but focusing that power into one finger? It's a whole different challenge," Garp continued. Luffy could hear heavy waves crashing in the background on his grandpa's end of the call.

"I've got some things to take care of here, so I'll leave you to it… Consider this technique my birthday gift to you," Garp said before ending the call.

Luffy looked at the Den Den Mushi in his hand, giving its antennae a playful poke, then watched it retreat into its shell. Satisfied, he put the snail away.

"So, it's Finger Gun this time? Thought it'd be Soru." But since his grandpa had advised him to focus on this, he'd stick to it.

After getting scolded by his grandpa previously, Luffy knew better than to try self-training in techniques he hadn't been formally taught. Even though Kuro's technique was close to Soru, Luffy wasn't going to rush into trying it. Watching someone use a technique doesn't always translate to being able to replicate it. Ordinary running and a sprinter's technique, for example, aren't the same; the rhythm of breathing alone makes a huge difference.

Luffy extended his fingers, bracing himself on five of them as he tried a handstand. Slowly, he lifted two fingers, leaving only three supporting his weight. His body trembled, and a dull pain settled in his arms.

With his three fingers arranged in a triangular support, he channeled energy through his body and into his fingertips.

Balancing on feet is simple; balancing on hands, relatively easy; but standing on fingertips? Nearly impossible. Yet, by redirecting leg strength into his fingers, he could make it work.

Crack.

A sound echoed as Luffy's three fingers sank into the wooden deck.

So, how much force is this putting on the ship?

Random physics equations of pressure and force distribution popped into Luffy's mind before he dismissed them.

Uta, practicing her scales, glanced over to see Luffy. His upside-down position caused his shirt to hang down, revealing his well-defined abs and the cute curve of his belly button. He moved up and down, training rigorously.

Nami was reading her book facing his direction. Her eyes naturally gravitated toward Luffy's movement as she swung her legs. Human vision tends to track motion, and her orange-brown eyes fixed on Luffy as he moved up and down.

She noticed how he blocked the wind, which gently traced his body's outline before dispersing to caress her skin. Sensitive to even the slightest breeze, her skin sent messages to her brain, which processed the airflow, concluding—the weather was beautiful, the breeze gentle.

What would her life have been like if she hadn't met Luffy?

Poverty could strain any family. She thought back to the meals at home—mostly oranges, sometimes dried ones. Fresh fruit is always best; dried, it loses something.

For her and Nojiko, it was okay, but Bell-mère would sometimes give them meat and then eat only oranges herself. Her skin had turned orange from so many oranges, and she'd laugh, saying she was dieting or beautifying her skin. But Nami knew better—Bell-mère just didn't have enough to share.

Then she thought of Arlong. She'd heard the adults talk. Arlong collected taxes on the surrounding islands: 100,000 Berries per adult, 50,000 per child, every month.

Everyone in the village was poor, scraping by just to survive. For most of the villagers, paying Arlong was a strain, but they managed. Bell-mère's situation was different. Living in such an isolated spot and selling common items didn't yield enough; she'd need 200,000 Berries each month.

That was a huge sum, impossible for her to pay.

Without money, they'd be killed. Nami didn't want to think about what would happen then. She didn't want to lose anyone—Bell-mère, Nojiko, or herself. They all needed to live.

If she could become a skilled navigator, she could make a good living. In this age of exploration, navigators were essential. She could earn a fortune if she honed her skills, so she was determined to study, even if it meant stealing books.

But back then, she hadn't yet learned enough to earn money…

And then, she had been saved.

Nami thought, saved by this boy. Meeting Luffy had been the best thing that ever happened. Even if Luffy didn't realize it, even if she was just one of many he'd saved, even if he hadn't done it intentionally, he'd saved her, Nojiko, and Bell-mère's lives.

How could she ever repay that debt?

Even if she squeezed every last Berry out of him, it wouldn't be enough.

Bell-mère had said to always repay kindness.

Nami watched him as these thoughts ran through her mind.

She remembered Bell-mère's conversations with Uncle Genzo. Uncle Genzo would blush and lose his nerve, turning away…

What would Bell-mère do?

Nami wondered.

With her body—

The idea crept into her mind.

Bell-mère often said things like that to men, winking and tilting her head. Men would blush and back away, too flustered to respond. But when teaching Nami and Nojiko, she was strict, warning them to be careful with their bodies. It was a weapon to use wisely, something to save for when they grew up and found someone they liked.

Adults were contradictory, weren't they? They'd say one thing and do another. But it was okay. She really liked Luffy, after all, and he was an ideal kind of boy. Bell-mère's advice wouldn't be broken if she said something bold to Luffy.

I'll repay you someday… with… my… body.

The thought made her giggle. She tilted her head, giving him a mischievous wink.

Would that work? Prob

ably. Luffy liked her. She was cute, after all.

Yes, she thought, I want to marry him someday.
