Chapter 2: Chapter 2
The sun was already high in the sky as Kaito, dressed in his worn but clean tunic and pants, set out with his two sons, Jian and Wei. Each of them carried two wooden buckets, their worn handles worn smooth by years of use.
Their destination was the nearby river, where they would fetch water for the day's chores.
As they walked, they passed through their small village, nestled between two great hills. The air was filled with the sounds of rural life: the clucking of chickens, the chirping of birds, and the occasional barking of dogs.
To their left lay the village's rice fields, where the villagers were already hard at work. Kaito's wife, Mei, and their daughter, Ling, were among them, their faces shaded by wide-brimmed hats as they planted rice seedlings in the muddy fields.
Kaito nodded to his fellow villagers as they passed by, exchanging brief greetings and words of encouragement. Jian and Wei waved to their mother and sister, who smiled and waved back.
Jian looked up at his father with curiosity. "Father, why do we have to fetch water so early?"
Kaito smiled, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "Because, my son, the day will only get hotter, and the river will only get busier. Besides, I want to get back in time to help your mother with the weaving."
Wei chimed in, "And I want to help with the weaving too, Father!"
Kaito chuckled. "We'll see, little one. First, let's get the water."
As they approached the forest, the sounds of the village gave way to the rustling of leaves and the chirping of birds. The path wound its way through the trees, the canopy above filtering the sunlight and casting dappled shadows on the ground.
Merchant caravans, laden with goods from distant lands, made their way along the path, their leaders calling out greetings to Kaito and his sons. The air was filled with the scent of exotic spices, tea, and silk.
Kaito nodded to the merchants, his eyes scanning the caravans with interest. "Perhaps we'll have some new goods to look at in the market today," he said to his sons.
Jian and Wei exchanged excited glances, already looking forward to their visit to the market.
As they walked, the sound of the river grew louder, and soon they caught sight of the sparkling water. Kaito smiled, his eyes shining with satisfaction. "Ah, we're here. Let's get to work, boys."
And with that, Kaito and his sons set to work, filling their buckets with the cool, clear water of the river. Kaito and his sons worked in silence, filling their buckets with the cool, clear water of the river. As they worked, Jian and Wei began to get restless, their eyes fixed on the sparkling water.
"Father, can we play?" Jian asked, his eyes shining with excitement.
Kaito smiled, nodding his head. "Just be careful, and don't go too far."
The two boys whooped with delight, dropping their buckets and racing into the water. Kaito watched them with a warm smile, feeling the heat of the day begin to get to him.
He bent down, cupping his hands to scoop up some water and splash it over his face. The cool liquid was refreshing, and he closed his eyes, letting out a contented sigh.
That's when he heard Jian's shout.
"Father! Father!"
Kaito's eyes snapped open, and he rushed over to see what his son was pointing at. That's when he saw her - an impossibly beautiful woman, laying half-submerged in the water, her body bruised and battered. She was clutching something tightly to her chest.
Kaito's heart skipped a beat as he rushed over to her. "Hey, can you hear me do you need anyhelp?".
The woman's eyes flickered open, and she gazed up at Kaito and his two son's on the other side of the river . With a Herculean effort she pushed off the rock, and weakly swam towards Kaito, her eyes fixed on his. Kaito quickly reached out, grabbing hold of her and pulling her to safety unto the shore.
" Hey miss are you ok what happened to you?" He asked. She silently held up the bundle she was clutching protectivly. Kaito looked down and saw that it was a sleeping baby. Taking the baby gently into his strong arms he gazed back up at the woman, concern etched on his face.
She looked up at him, her eyes filled with a desperate plea. "Please... take care of him," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "He's far more important than you can imagine... and I don't have much time left. Promise me... you'll keep him safe, promisee you'll protect him."
Despite not knowing what was going on he knew he had to do something. Kaito's face was soon set with determination. "I promise," he said, his voice firm. "I'll keep him safe."
The woman smiled weakly at him, a look of relief washing over her face. She reached into her tunic and pulled out three items: a delicate silver necklace, a leather scroll, and a small pouch filled with gems and gold. She handed them to Kaito, her eyes never leaving his.
"Thank you," she whispered, her voice fading away as her hand dropped.
As Kaito took the items, the woman's eyes closed, and her body relaxed against the shore . Soon a soft, blue mist began to emanate from her body, enveloping her in a gentle, ethereal glow.
Kaito watched in shock and awe as the mist grew thicker, until the woman's body was completely obscured. And then, in an instant, the mist vanished, leaving behind only the faintest hint of her presence that began fading quickly.
Kaito was left holding the baby, the necklace, the scroll, and the pouch, his mind reeling with questions and doubts. Who was this woman? What was the significance of the items she had given him? And what did she mean by the baby being "far more important" than he could imagine?.
He looked down at his son's who where clutching his legs tightly while looking up at him just as shocked as he was before he looked down at the sleeping baby nestled in his arms. Inspecting the baby closer noticed that the child seemed to be unharmed.
Casting one last glance to where the mysterious woman's laid just a few minutes ago he began making his way back home filled with more questions than answers.
