Chapter 14: Echoes of the Forgotten
The old corridor was dimly lit. The walls had ancient runes that glowed softly. As the squad moved through, shadows flickered all around them. The ground felt cool and damp beneath their boots. This was a stark contrast to the dry, dusty air they had just left behind in the crumbling ruins outside.
Rael led the way. His eyes were sharp. He was on high alert, scanning for any sign of movement. His fingers hovered near the trigger of his rifle. Kael, walking behind him, placed a glowing marker on the wall. The faint blue arrow pointed back to the now-caved-in passage they had just exited.
"Not that it matters," Kael said with a sigh, glancing back at the debris blocking their way. "We can't get out that way now."
"No one is going back that way," Rael said firmly. "We push ahead. No discussions about it."
"Classic Rael logic," Kael muttered with a smirk, earning a low chuckle from Derrin.
Lyssa stayed focused on her wrist-mounted interface. She watched the energy signals buzzing through the walls. They flickered and increased as they moved deeper into the corridor. She bit her lip, fingers flying over the buttons.
"Captain," she said quietly, her voice serious. "I'm picking up something ahead. The energy feels like... a generator, but it feels old and raw. This isn't typical machinery. It's something different."
Rael didn't slow his pace but turned his eyes toward her. "Do you think it's alive?"
"It's reactive," she replied, stressing the word. "It's watching us."
After that, everyone fell silent.
---
Eventually, the narrow corridor opened into a massive room. The ceiling disappeared into darkness. The light from the runes reflected off the smooth, black floor, giving it a strange shine that looked almost like glass. Tall pillars lined the room, like ancient guardians of something important. Some were cracked and worn. Others looked as if they had just arrived.
But what really caught their attention was the big stone door at the far end of the room. It was larger than anything they had ever seen. Its surface was filled with swirling patterns that glowed faintly, matching the blue light of the runes. Energy lines came together in the center, forming a pulsing sigil that seemed to throb like a heartbeat.
"Looks like a dead end," Kael said with a short breath. "Or maybe a boss room. Pick one."
"It's a seal," Lyssa said, stepping cautiously closer. Her eyes were fixed on the glowing patterns, her mind racing. "No, wait... this isn't just a door. It's meant to hold something inside."
"Hold what?" Derrin asked, raising his rifle instinctively. He scanned the shadows lurking in the corners.
"Something they didn't want out," Lyssa replied with a grim tone. "Or maybe something they didn't want us to reach."
Rael edged closer, his eyes locked on the glowing sigil on the door. "Can you open it?"
"I can try," she said, fingers hovering nervously over the surface. "But I'm not sure I should."
"You should," Rael insisted. "We've got no other options."
Lyssa hesitated for a brief moment. Then she nodded. Her fingers moved quickly over the glowing runes. The symbols reacted to her touch, shifting as if alive. The slow pulsing energy began to speed up, shining brighter than before.
"Keep alert," Rael said, stepping back while waving for Kael and Derrin to spread out. "This place didn't stay sealed for ages just to let us waltz in."
---
The sigil on the door glowed even brighter. A deep hum filled the chamber, like ancient machinery coming to life. The energy lines lit up, wrapping the room in their glow. For a moment, the chamber felt alive, vibrating under their feet.
"Lyssa, is this normal?" Kael asked, flicking his gaze nervously between the walls and the spinning sigil.
"It's part of what's happening," she replied quickly, typing faster. "Or so I hope."
With a loud clunk, the stone door trembled. Ancient gears creaked back into motion after many years of stillness. The patterns on the door turned piece by piece like a puzzle. The noise was deafening — stone grinding against stone, metal clicking, and air hissing like a serpent.
And then, it stopped.
Silence came over the chamber.
But not the calm kind. This silence was heavy, almost suffocating.
"Is it over?" Derrin whispered, his rifle aimed at the still door.
"Doesn't feel like it," Kael murmured, glancing around nervously. His heart raced, warning him that something was about to happen.
He was right.
The hum returned, deeper than before. It felt like the breathing of a massive creature. The runes flickered, not due to power loss, but from shadows shifting. Long, jagged shapes moved along the walls.
"Movement!" Rael yelled, turning his rifle toward the nearest pillar. "Get ready!"
From behind the pillars, rumbling stone began to crack. Slowly, figures emerged. At first, they moved awkwardly, like faulty puppets. Then, their eyes lit up with a fiery blue glow, illuminating their stone faces.
Stone sentinels. Huge figures made of obsidian and metal, standing at least eight feet tall. Their joints clicked as they moved with eerie precision.
"Contact!" Derrin shouted, firing his weapon. The first shot hit the chest of the nearest sentinel. Sparks flew, but it kept coming, its cracked skin adding to its menace.
"Lyssa, what's the door status?" Rael called out as he shot at another sentinel. The rounds hit, but it didn't slow down.
"I'm on it!" she shouted, fingers racing across the interface. The sigil's glow grew stronger, but it wasn't finished yet.
Rael barked commands. He had Derrin aim for the weak points of the sentinels.
Kael tossed a grenade. The explosion rocked the room, shattering a sentinel's leg. It collapsed but kept dragging itself closer.
Tension rose as they fought to give Lyssa the time she needed.
The air was getting hotter. The hum grew louder, but it felt more alive now than mechanical. It seemed to be breathing.
"Captain," Lyssa's voice rang, higher than usual. "You're not going to like this."
"Give it to me," Rael responded, dodging a strike from one of the sentinels.
"That door we thought was locking something in? It's here to keep us out," she revealed.
---
With a final flash, the sigil erupted with bright white light. The symbols locked into place, and instead of opening, the whole door slid back and up, revealing a cloud of darkness inside. Cool mist poured out, like the breath from something long asleep.
"Tell me you see that," Kael said, eyes wide in shock.
Something was stirring inside. Not slowly. It moved quickly, almost violently.
There was a flash of blue light, bright like lightning. And then came a roar.
It wasn't an animal roar. It sounded deep, metallic, like grinding stone mixed with crashing metal. The mist parted just enough for them to see it.
Two massive, glowing eyes, fixed on them.
"Oh no," Kael groaned, stepping back closer to Rael. "Please tell me that's what I think it is."
"It is," Rael replied, his teeth gritted as he raised his rifle.
"Everyone, get back to Lyssa. This is where we hold our ground," he ordered.
They could hear it approaching, each footfall shaking the ground.
"Guns ready," Rael said quietly. "We need to survive this."
