Chapter 8: Whispers in the Dark
The forest seemed to grow even darker as the trio ventured deeper, the trees pressing closer together until only the faint glow of their gear illuminated the path. The air was colder here, carrying a subtle hint of decay. Ryan couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched.
"This place gives me the creeps," Ryan said, his voice barely above a whisper. His sword was drawn, the blade ready for anything that might emerge from the shadows.
"Good," Arya replied, her bow at the ready. "Stay on edge. That instinct will keep you alive."
Grent, ever the optimist, let out a low chuckle. "I'd be worried if you weren't nervous, kid. The deeper we go, the more dangerous it gets."
The trio came to a small clearing where the ground was littered with bones, some old and brittle, others disturbingly fresh. Ryan's HUD flickered with warnings as faint heat signatures appeared on the edges of the clearing.
"We're not alone," Ryan said, his voice tight.
Arya's sharp eyes scanned the shadows. "Ambush. Grent, stay in the center. Ryan, keep your back to ours."
As soon as they formed a defensive circle, the shadows came alive. Figures darted from the trees—twisted humanoid shapes with elongated limbs and glowing red eyes. Their skin was dark and leathery, blending seamlessly with the darkness.
[Shadow Stalkers] - Level 5
Ryan barely had time to read the notification before the first stalker lunged at him. He raised his shield just in time, the creature's claws scraping against the metal with a horrible screech. He countered with a quick slash of his sword, cutting deep into its side. The stalker hissed and retreated, but another took its place.
"They're testing us," Arya said, loosing an arrow that struck a stalker in the chest. It crumpled into a heap, its body dissolving into particles of light. "Don't let them overwhelm you."
Grent let out a roar, swinging his hammer in a wide arc that sent two stalkers flying. "Keep it tight! Don't give them any openings!"
Ryan's heart pounded as he ducked under another attack, his sword flashing as he activated [Quick Strike]. The blade found its mark, and the stalker disintegrated before it could retaliate. His HUD flashed with a notification: +20 XP.
The fight was chaotic, the stalkers coming at them from every angle. Arya moved with precision, her arrows finding their targets with unerring accuracy. Grent held the line, his hammer smashing through anything that got too close. Ryan focused on keeping their flanks clear, his sword a blur as he cut down the attackers.
"They're thinning out!" Arya called, her voice steady despite the chaos. "Keep pushing!"
As the last stalker fell, the clearing grew silent once more. Ryan's arms felt like lead, and his breath came in ragged gasps, but he was alive. The experience bar on his HUD crept closer to the next level.
"Good work," Arya said, lowering her bow. She scanned the area, her expression cautious. "But something's not right. This was too easy."
"Easy?" Ryan echoed, incredulous. "That was easy?"
Grent chuckled, clapping him on the back. "She's got a point, kid. Stalkers usually don't hunt alone. There's something bigger nearby."
As if on cue, a low rumble shook the ground. The bones littering the clearing rattled as a shadow darker than the night itself emerged from the far end of the clearing. It was massive, its form shifting and writhing as though it were made of living darkness.
[Umbra Wraith] - Level 8
Ryan's blood ran cold as the creature's name appeared on his HUD. The wraith let out a haunting wail, and the very air seemed to vibrate with its malice.
"Now that's more like it," Grent said, a grim smile spreading across his face.
"This isn't the time for jokes," Arya snapped, her eyes fixed on the wraith. "Grent, keep it distracted. Ryan, stay mobile. Aim for its core—it'll glow when it's vulnerable."
Grent charged with a battle cry, his hammer glowing faintly as he activated a skill. The wraith turned toward him, a massive shadowy arm lashing out. Grent raised his shield, the impact sending shockwaves through the clearing.
"Move, Ryan!" Arya shouted, loosing an arrow that streaked toward the wraith. The arrow struck its side, momentarily staggering the creature and exposing a faintly glowing core in its chest.
Ryan didn't hesitate. He activated [Quick Strike], dashing toward the wraith and slashing at the core. His sword connected, and the creature let out an ear-splitting shriek, its form flickering.
"Again!" Arya yelled, firing another arrow.
Grent pressed the attack, his hammer slamming into the wraith's side with a resounding crash. The creature staggered, its movements growing more erratic as Ryan struck the core a second time. His HUD flashed: Critical Hit!
The wraith retaliated, a tendril of shadow whipping toward Ryan. He rolled out of the way, but the edge of the attack clipped him, sending him sprawling. His health bar dropped dangerously low.
"Drink this!" Arya called, tossing a small vial toward him.
Ryan caught it and downed the potion in one motion, warmth spreading through his body as his health bar replenished. He scrambled to his feet just in time to see Grent deliver a crushing blow to the wraith's core, shattering it.
The Umbra Wraith let out one final wail before dissolving into a cloud of dark particles. Ryan's HUD lit up: +150 XP. Level Up! (Ryan is now Level 5)
He sank to his knees, his chest heaving. Grent and Arya stood over him, both looking worn but triumphant.
"Not bad, newbie," Arya said, offering him a hand. "You're still alive. That's progress."
Grent grinned. "You handled yourself well, kid. Keep this up, and you might just make a name for yourself."
Ryan nodded, his mind spinning from the battle. As he looked at the fading remnants of the wraith, he couldn't help but feel a surge of pride. He was no longer just surviving—he was growing stronger.
"So," he said, his voice steady despite his exhaustion, "what's next?"
Arya smirked. "First, we rest. Then we find out what else is hiding in these woods."
Ryan stood, his grip on his sword firm. Whatever lay ahead, he was ready to face it with his team by his side.
