Chapter 16: Chapter 16: Shave Unleashed
"Too bad. I can't tell if that was a battle between wild Pokémon or a fight among other challengers."
"If we'd arrived just a bit earlier, we might've reaped some easy rewards," said Chōnō, inspecting the marks left on a tree trunk with a tinge of regret.
In Chōnō's eyes, compared to those who had only a superficial understanding of Pokémon, he was ahead of the game. By capturing a Nidoran and evolving it into a Nidorino, his clear objectives and relative luck placed him firmly in the first tier of challengers.
With a Level 21 Nidorino and a Level 20 Koffing, most opponents would struggle to be a match for him. If he had arrived sooner, eliminating a potential competitor would've been simple.
Shaking off his regret, Chōnō ceased his investigation and prepared to move forward. Koffing floated ahead to lead the way, while Nidorino stayed close by, acting as a bodyguard.
Unbeknownst to them, a Meowth hidden in the shadows had already activated Hypnosis.
With no time to react, and given the comparable levels of the Pokémon, the attack hit with remarkable effect.
Seizing the opportunity, a Machop sprang from its hiding spot, using a simplified version of Shave/Soru to streak forward like a feral beast. With a swift and brutal charge, it knocked Koffing out of the air.
In that moment, Meowth faced a choice: engage the potentially troublesome Nidorino or target the vulnerable Chōnō. It didn't hesitate.
Its claws gleamed and slashed. Crimson blood spattered in the air. Chōnō's demise was so swift and clean he didn't even have time to register pain.
Meowth, fully embracing its role as an assassin, retreated immediately without lingering for further attacks.
Meanwhile, Machop had already subdued Koffing.
From the very start, Ron had given a clear order: leave no survivors.
In mere moments, only Nidorino, freshly shaken out of its hypnotic stupor, remained standing.
The sight before Nidorino's eyes—the lifeless forms of its trainer and companion—filled it with rage and confusion.
How could everything fall apart in a single moment? Was it all just a nightmare?
"Machop, the rest is up to you. Show me the extent of your abilities now that you've mastered Shave."
With victory nearly assured, Ron handed the stage to Machop.
Hearing this, Meowth returned to Ron's side, assuming a protective stance while observing the scene unfold.
Machop, eyes brimming with fighting spirit, stepped forward to face Nidorino.
Within seconds of Ron's command, Nidorino seized a brief opening to counterattack. Poisonous barbs shot forth as it charged, preparing for a close-quarters fight.
Facing a Pokémon like Nidorino required caution—not only against its sturdy horn but also the toxic spikes on its body, which carried potent venom.
Dodging the poison barbs with a swift Shave to the left, Machop turned into a blur. As Nidorino dashed forward, all it caught was a flicker of grey before Machop vanished from sight.
To halt its momentum, Machop dug its hands into the ground, executing a sharp, controlled stop. It then used Shave again, reappearing behind Nidorino to land a devastating close-range strike.
Anticipating the danger, Machop carefully avoided contact with Nidorino's poisonous spikes, minimizing the risk of being poisoned.
With Nidorino briefly stunned, Machop pressed the advantage, launching another high-speed charge.
Struggling to stand, Nidorino's left side felt numb, almost paralyzed. Before it could recover, Machop's next blow landed, sending it hurtling into a massive tree. The impact was so powerful that the tree snapped in half, leaving Nidorino collapsed at its base, glaring in frustration at Machop.
Nidorino's indignation wasn't from facing an overwhelmingly stronger opponent but from the maddening speed and precision that left it utterly helpless.
Ron observed the battle with satisfaction. Nidorino's potential as a Pokémon was undeniable, especially its final evolution into Nidoking. A fully trained Nidoking could master a variety of powerful close-combat and ranged moves, from Ice Beam to Blizzard.
If a Nidoking with the Sheer Force ability crossed his path in the future, Ron would gladly nurture it into a fearsome powerhouse. But this particular Nidorino, having been captured by Chōnō, wasn't worth the effort. Ron decided to grant it a swift and painless end.
With Ron's signal, Machop executed another Shave, disappearing from sight.
A dull thud marked the end of the confrontation.
Chōnō's ambitions, along with his Pokémon, were extinguished entirely.
The fight gave Ron a clear sense of Machop's capabilities. With Shave mastered, Machop could easily handle opponents up to five levels higher, though this theory would require further testing—perhaps with the help of Ron's newly captured Gloom.
After tidying the battlefield, Ron quickly led his team to a quieter location.
Releasing Gloom from its Poké Ball, Ron noted that the specialized tool had helped it recover from its earlier fainting spell.
Unfortunately, Gloom's signature unpleasant odor was far more intense than usual, thanks to its Stench ability—a rare trait that made its natural aroma several times more potent.
While Ron wasn't overly bothered, having endured worse smells in his previous life, Machop and Meowth were visibly struggling but held on, inspired by Ron's composure.
"Gloom, I captured you to use your Sweet Scent to lure other Pokémon. I promise I won't force you to battle. In two months, I'll release you back into the forest. How does that sound?"
Ron gently stroked the flower-like growth on Gloom's head, his voice soft and reassuring.
Gloom, stunned by the unexpected kindness, shyly wiggled its body. For the first time since evolving, it experienced such close contact with another being. Overwhelmed with joy, it nodded in agreement.
Unbeknownst to Ron, his actions had left an indelible mark on Gloom's heart.
