Chapter 61: Time Warp Heals All Wounds, Part 2!
Edna felt a pang of unease as she unfolded the letter Jonathan had left behind. Rain pattered softly against the window as her trembling hands scanned the words.
"Dearest Edna,
I've made the difficult decision to leave for the city. I want to build a future for us—a future where I can provide not only for you but also for the Pokémon we've cared for together. Please stay in our hometown. I promise to return as soon as I've earned my certification, and then we'll be married."
The words felt like a dagger in her heart. Her legs felt weak, her breath shallow. How could Jonathan leave without telling her in person? Didn't he know she had something important to share with him—something that would change their lives forever?
Edna's hands instinctively cradled her abdomen. She was carrying their child, a truth she hadn't yet found the courage to share with him. Fueled by desperation and love, she bolted from the house, the letter clutched tightly in her hand as the rain turned into a downpour.
At the train station, Jonathan sat inside the carriage, staring out at the rain-soaked platform. His heart was heavy. He had waited until the last possible moment, hoping Edna would come to see him off, but she was nowhere to be found.
"This is for us," he murmured to himself, trying to ease the ache in his chest. "For her, for the town, for the Pokémon we both love."
The train whistle blew, signaling its imminent departure. Jonathan's resolve faltered, but the doors closed, and the train began to pull away. He stood by the window, looking back one last time, still hoping to catch a glimpse of her.
Just as the train began to move, Edna arrived at the platform, her clothes drenched and her hair plastered to her face. "Jonathan!" she cried out, her voice breaking.
Through the window, Jonathan heard her voice faintly, his eyes widening in shock. He leaned out as far as he could, shouting her name, but the train had already picked up speed, disappearing into the dark tunnel.
The chaos of the station overwhelmed Edna. Someone bumped into her, and she stumbled slightly, clutching the necklace Jonathan had given her. In the confusion, the necklace slipped from her neck and fell, unnoticed, onto the tracks.
Left alone on the platform, Edna sank to her knees, her tears mingling with the rain. She stayed there for what felt like hours, sobbing until the station was empty and silent.
The days that followed were filled with unbearable silence. Edna clung to hope, waiting for any word from Jonathan. When a trusted friend prepared to travel to the city, she asked them to find out how Jonathan was faring.
Weeks passed, and her friend returned, bearing the news she dreaded most.
"There's been an accident," they said softly. "Jonathan… he didn't make it."
Edna's world shattered. The accident, a collision in the bustling streets of the city, had claimed several lives, including Jonathan's. His body was never recovered, leaving only fragments of belongings and haunting rumors.
For Edna, the loss was indescribable. Every dream, every plan they had made together, crumbled in an instant. Yet, despite her grief, she resolved to visit the train station every day, holding onto the faintest hope that he would somehow return.
As Katrina finished recounting the story, May's eyes were brimming with tears. "That's… that's so tragic," she whispered, her voice trembling. Pikachu and Squirtle shared her somber expression, while Ash's usual optimism was replaced by a quiet determination.
Ash comforted May with a hug. "We can't change what happened," he said softly. "But maybe we can do something to ease her pain."
May blushed, her face warm against Ash's chest. "Like what?" she murmured.
"I think we should find her necklace," Ash suggested, his voice firm. "It might mean a lot to her, even after all this time."
The two of them returned to the abandoned train station, carefully searching every nook and cranny. Hours passed, and just as the sun began to set, May let out a gasp of excitement.
"Over here! I think I found it!" she called out.
Ash rushed over to see May holding the necklace, its delicate chain tarnished but still intact. Inside the locket was a small, faded photograph of a young Edna and Jonathan, their smiles filled with hope and love.
"It's beautiful," May whispered, her fingers tracing the edges of the locket.
Suddenly, a warm golden glow enveloped the necklace. Before they could react, Ash, May, Pikachu, and Squirtle found themselves standing in the same train station—but it was no longer abandoned. The platform buzzed with life, the air filled with the sounds of chatter and the distant whistle of an approaching train.
"We're… in the past," Ash realized, his eyes wide.
"There he is!" May pointed to a young Jonathan, standing near the train, his suitcase at his feet.
Ash made a quick decision. "We're not letting him leave. Not like this."
Releasing Feraligatr and Pidgeot, Ash instructed them to use Ice Beam and Whirlwind. The rain in the sky crystallized into snowflakes, blanketing the station in white.
Jonathan, startled by the sudden snowfall, hesitated. As the train was delayed, Edna arrived at the platform, panting heavily.
"Jonathan!" she cried, clutching her stomach. "I need to tell you something!"
Jonathan rushed to her side, his eyes filled with concern. "Edna, what's wrong?"
"I'm pregnant," she confessed, tears streaming down her face. "I didn't want you to leave without knowing."
Jonathan's expression softened, his resolve crumbling. He pulled Edna into an embrace. "I'm not going anywhere," he promised. "We'll face this together."
As the glow of the necklace returned, Ash and May found themselves back in the present. The train station was no longer abandoned. Instead, it was bustling with life, and standing on the platform was an elderly Jonathan, holding hands with Edna.
"They made it," May whispered.
Ash smiled, his heart swelling with pride. "Yeah. They did."
The two trainers left the station hand in hand, their bond deepened by the journey they had shared.
