Chapter 71: Chapter 71: Flamethrower
Honestly, the Charcoal significantly aided Lian by enhancing the power of his Fire-type moves, resulting in increased output and making it easier to achieve higher combat ratings.
With the Charcoal equipped, Lian felt a heightened concentration of fire energy around him, providing immense comfort.
Next, he turned his attention to the Move Disk inside the box. It was clearly the Fire-type move that Kalia mentioned purchasing earlier, but he wondered which specific move it would be.
Seeing Charmeleon eagerly eyeing the box, Kalia smiled and retrieved the Move Disk, revealing the recorded Fire-type move: Flamethrower.
Flamethrower is an advanced version of Ember, boasting remarkable power. It serves as both a signature Fire-type move and one of the strongest Fire-type moves Charmeleon can learn.
By continuously emitting intense flames, this move inflicts sustained burning damage on opponents, making it extremely difficult to evade. Among various Fire-type moves, while not the most powerful, Flamethrower is notably the most stable Fire-type attack.
Kalia spent 7,500 Alliance Coins on this Flamethrower Move Disk. Normally, such a disk would cost around 5,000 Alliance Coins; however, the production process for Move Disks is complex, and due to Flamethrower being an exceptional Fire-type move, it typically sells out quickly once available in stores.
Kalia had obtained this Move Disk through her friend Lewis using special channels, despite it being quite expensive. However, simply managing to purchase it was already considered fortunate.
Believing in Charmeleon's exceptional talent for fire moves, Kalia anticipated that he would quickly grasp Flamethrower. Once mastered, it would add another powerful Fire-type move to his arsenal.
Lian was unaware that the Move Disk contained Flamethrower until Kalia started playing it on the device.
"Wow, it's actually Flamethrower?" Lian felt both surprised and delighted. With Flamethrower, he would possess a high-powered Fire-type move, allowing him to maximize his Special Attack capabilities.
Flamethrower boasts a remarkable power of 90, making it one of the strongest Fire-type moves even after Lian evolves into Charizard.
He attentively watched the demonstration, going over it more than twenty times before Kalia turned off the player. She then encouraged him to practice and attempt to comprehend the Flamethrower move.
"Charmeleon, tomorrow I'm planning to challenge the gym. After some practice, we'll head out for fun and relaxation," Kalia suddenly announced. It was about time; they had been in Falcon City for nearly twenty days now. Gym Leader Moran of Pearl City is likely back by now, so she aimed to swiftly challenge the Flying Type Gym, proceed to Pearl City, and earn her third red star badge.
Next up would be completing the beginner trainer assessment to officially become a recognized junior Trainer by the League.
This was Kalia's immediate goal; only as a junior Trainer could she challenge Silver Rank Gyms and subsequently capture her third Pokemon.
Challenging the gym tomorrow?
Lian felt confident about facing the Flying Type Gym, considering his Hidden Power (Rock) move gave him an advantage against flying-type Pokemon. Additionally, with his 1.2x Explosive Power multiplier, he could make significant impact during critical moments.
However, the Gym Leader's Pokemon would undoubtedly be of high level. Achieving victory without taking damage would yield a higher combat rating score. He couldn't afford to be careless, as any misstep could result in losing substantial Combat Points.
Lian recalled receiving his highest rating once—a C grade—which rewarded him with 1,500 Combat Points. That time, it was due to the opponent's Pokemon having a healing move.
He wished the Gym Leaders could use Potions during battles, but unfortunately, that wasn't allowed. Gym battles were meant to be fair Pokémon contests, and using Potions mid-battle would violate the rules.
If discovered by the Pokemon League, the consequences would be severe; even for a Gym Leader, punishment would be inevitable.
Since they were challenging the gym the next day, Kalia opted not to conduct any combat training with Lian. Instead, they spent the day exploring Falcon City, enjoying its unique local cuisine, and relaxing their minds.
After a fulfilling day, upon returning to their hotel room, Lian felt quite content. He promptly fell asleep, drifting into pleasant dreams.
In the System Space:
"How come there's no Flamethrower?!"
Entering the System Space, Lian eagerly checked the moves section, only to find that Flamethrower was not displayed. This left him utterly astonished, as he had planned to unlock it today.
What could be the reason?
Was it because he hadn't watched enough demonstration videos? But he had already viewed it over twenty times, which should have been sufficient.
Perhaps his level was too low, preventing him from executing such a powerful move.
Lian suspected that his current level might indeed be too low. At just Level 18, he was still more than ten levels away from reaching Level 30, let alone evolving into a Charizard.
The reason Pokemon need to grow before learning certain moves is that once they reach an adequate level, they possess the capability to execute those moves, gradually comprehending them on their own.
Moves like Swift and Hidden Power have lower learning difficulty, and Lian had met the prerequisites, allowing the system to display them.
Considering this, Flamethrower's immense power likely exceeded Lian's current capabilities. Unable to handle such strong flame energy at once, the system prevented him from learning it.
What a pity!
Lian felt disappointed that he couldn't learn Flamethrower yet, but despite the setback, mastering it was just a matter of time. It wouldn't hinder his plans for challenging the gym tomorrow.
Currently, his Combat Points stood at over 2,500. Although Kalia didn't arrange any combat training today, Lian wasn't going to waste an opportunity for earning points. He sought out a random trainer's Pokemon for a battle and managed to secure around four hundred Combat Points with some effort.
Gaining Combat Points was painfully slow. As his strength increased, more Combat Points were required for each upgrade, and with only one daily chance for a combat rating, he could accumulate roughly three thousand points per week. To reach eight or nine thousand Combat Points would take at least half a month.
Well, no use dwelling on it now.
Lian decided not to worry further, exited the system space, and continued sleeping.

Early the next morning, Kalia woke Lian as usual. He swiftly got out of bed and began eating breakfast.
Midway through his meal, Lian noticed Grovyle intently staring at the Charcoal on his chest. It was clear that the concentrated flame energy within the Charcoal had caught Grovyle's attention.
Unbothered, Lian continued eating, indifferent to whether Grovyle felt envy or jealousy; it didn't concern him.
"Let's get going."
After finishing their breakfast, Kalia tidied up, recalled Grovyle into its Poké Ball, and led Lian away from the Pokemon Hotel towards the Flying Type Gym.
Following Kalia for some time, they arrived at an imposing building.
The Flying Type Gym boasted a spacious structure. From the outside, it appeared as a typical gym with no distinct features, except for its retractable roof.
During Trainer challenges, the Gym Leader would open the roof, revealing the vast blue sky above. Since most of the Gym Leader's Pokemon were flying types, battling under a ceiling would restrict their movements, necessitating this design feature.
As they approached, the gym's roof was noticeably open, showcasing a flying Fearow soaring high and occasionally diving downwards.
This Pokemon was none other than Kas' Fearow, one of two guardian Pokemon alongside her Gligar, forming the core of Gym Leader Kas' team.
