The Next Morning

"Karen's cooking is as terrible as ever. I need to go catch a new Pokémon. Hmm, I've decided—Gardevoir it is."

At breakfast, Will's baby-fat cheeks jiggled as he kept chewing while complaining about Karen's cooking.

Because it was obvious that Stephen was in a bad mood, Karen had gotten up especially early to prepare breakfast.

But seeing the current situation, if not for Stephen and the Pokémon present, Karen might have already turned Will into breakfast himself.

"Stephen, you still haven't told us what your plan is," Karen interjected, quickly changing the topic while silently making a mental note to deal with Will later.

Will paused his chewing and turned his curious gaze toward Stephen.

Although they knew Stephen had come to Alola to help Umbreon break through her limit, they still didn't know the specifics of his plan.

"We're going to Aether Paradise," Stephen said.

Aether Paradise?

Hearing this, both Will and Karen were taken aback.

Aether Paradise was a large artificial island built in the center of the four Alola islands. Many called it the fifth island of the Alola region. It was also the headquarters of the Aether Foundation.

"The Aether Foundation... I think they're an organization dedicated to protecting Pokémon, right?" Will asked after a moment of thought.

"They seem to rescue wild Pokémon abandoned by their groups or those unable to survive on their own. They also take in Pokémon abandoned by trainers. It's a compassionate organization."

"Not just that," Karen chimed in. "They've also conducted in-depth research on 'Ultra Beasts.'"

"Ultra Beasts? What's that?" Will asked with a puzzled expression.

Karen rolled her eyes. "Read a book sometime."

With that, she tossed a book she had bought from the bookstore yesterday into Will's hands.

Ultra Beasts were strange Pokémon that had started appearing out of nowhere in recent years across Alola.

Not only were they unheard of in Alola, but they were also unlike anything seen across the entire Pokémon world.

They often possessed terrifying power. Whenever one appeared, it usually took the island guardians or even the island kahunas to subdue it.

"Alola has long hoped to join the Pokémon League," Stephen explained. "Professor Kukui has been working hard to make it happen, but the Indigo League has been reluctant to agree."

"Partly because Alola's strength is still lacking, and partly because the mystery of the Ultra Beasts remains unsolved. The League headquarters sees it as a security risk to admit a region with such uncertainties."

"But what does the Aether Foundation's research on Ultra Beasts have to do with helping Umbreon break through her limit?"

Now that Will had a basic understanding of what Ultra Beasts were, he raised another question.

As they cleaned up after breakfast and prepared to set out, Stephen explained, "Ultra Beasts are very unique Pokémon. One of their unique traits is that it's often hard to determine their type just by looking at them."

"For instance, you know Sudowoodo, right?" Stephen asked.

"Of course," Karen replied without hesitation. "The evolved form of Bonsly. It looks like a Grass-type but is a Rock-type Pokémon."

"Exactly. Ultra Beasts share this trait. It's often difficult to discern their true typing based on their appearance," Stephen said, remembering Nihilego.

When he first saw that jellyfish-like Ultra Beast, who could have guessed it was Rock/Poison?

"So, to counter Ultra Beasts, the Aether Foundation tried to create an artificial Pokémon capable of possessing all types at once."

Will and Karen were both stunned.

Will's hands trembled, and the plate he was holding nearly fell to the ground. Thankfully, his Xatu reacted quickly, using Psychic to catch the plate before it hit the floor.

"A Pokémon with all types? How is that even possible?!" Will exclaimed, astonished.

Karen didn't shout like Will, but her face showed equal disbelief.

In reality, while type advantages weren't as exaggerated as they were in the games, and there were many ways to mitigate type disadvantages, a Pokémon with all types?

Wouldn't that make it invincible?!

"Technically, it's not a Pokémon with all types," Stephen clarified. "It's a Pokémon capable of switching between types at will."

He was, of course, referring to the artificial Pokémon—Silvally.

By switching memory disks, Silvally could change its typing. Unlike in the games, where you had to commit to a specific type for an entire battle, in this real-world setting, you could freely swap memory disks whenever needed.

Gladion had demonstrated this capability before.

"Switching types... Wait! Stephen, are you planning to—?!" Karen gasped, already guessing Stephen's intentions.

Strictly speaking, Eevee was also a Pokémon with multiple potential types.

As of now, Eevee's known evolutions include Fire, Water, Electric, Psychic (Espeon), and Dark (Umbreon). Who knew if there were more types to come in the future?

However, once Eevee evolved, its type was permanently fixed.

But what if it could switch between types?

Karen couldn't even imagine how powerful that would be.

"That would be... Arceevee," Stephen joked with a smile.

Indeed, what he had in mind was essentially an Eevee version of Arceus—dubbed "Arceevee."

Stephen's reference model wasn't Silvally but Arceus itself.

While Silvally could switch types by changing memory disks, it required its trainer's help to do so.

In high-level battles, where victory or defeat could be decided in a second, who had time to leisurely swap disks?

But Arceus was different—it could switch types independently.

Not only that but once Arceus switched types, any moves of that type used against it became completely ineffective.

And that was just the power of its avatars. Who knew what abilities its true form still held?

Although Silvally's method of switching types was more cumbersome, Stephen still needed to study its development process to modify Umbreon's genes accordingly.

It had to be said—geniuses existed in every world.

Even though Stephen had learned everything there was to know from Vegapunk, he didn't consider himself invincible.

Whoever developed Silvally's AR System was undoubtedly a genius.

"There's still so much to learn..." Stephen sighed as he wiped his hands after finishing the cleanup.

"Leave one Pokémon to guard the base. Let's head out," Stephen said, turning to the other two.

Leaving a guard Pokémon wasn't just to prevent wild Pokémon from invading but also to protect the Pokémon egg soaking in the nutrient solution.

Will and Karen exchanged glances.

In the end, Will decided to leave his Xatu behind to watch the base.

The three of them then headed to Hau'oli City's port, bought three tickets for a ship bound for Aether Paradise, and set off toward the pristine white island in the middle of the Alola seas.
