Pokémon: Life Finds a Way

Chapter 21: Chapter 21 : Training Shadows

Frustration weighed heavily on my shoulders as I stared at the mountain of books and scrolls spread across my desk. Legends, myths, ancient texts—none of them offered the answer I sought. I had spent weeks combing through every scrap of information, chasing whispers of forgotten knowledge that might give me a clue about improving Poké Ball technology. But every lead had turned into a dead end.

With a sigh, I pushed myself away from the desk and rubbed my temples. My mind felt like it was spinning in circles, and I needed a break before I drove myself insane. I glanced at the clock—still plenty of daylight left. Perfect for a training session. I called out to Golett and stepped outside into the crisp afternoon air, ready to clear my head.

Ever since Grandpa John had given me Golett, we'd been training regularly. Golett was strong—sturdier and more versatile than most Pokémon its size—but there was always room for improvement. The fresh air was a welcome relief from the cluttered study, and the training field, already set with dummies, targets, and other equipment, promised a productive session.

I met with Golett in the field, and its glowing eyes met mine with a look of determination. "Golett!" it rumbled, its deep, metallic voice vibrating with enthusiasm.

"Alright, buddy," I said, rolling up my sleeves. "Let's make today count."

I'd already figured out a lot about Golett's capabilities. Its punches, like Shadow Punch and Mega Punch, were incredibly powerful thanks to its likely ability, Iron Fist. But power wasn't enough. If we wanted to become stronger together, we needed precision, control, and versatility.

"Let's start with the basics," I told Golett. "We'll warm up with Shadow Punch and Mega Punch first, then move into elemental attacks."

"Go-lett!" it replied, pounding its fists together with a metallic clang.

We began with Shadow Punch, an attack that never missed. I set up a variety of targets at different heights and angles to challenge Golett's speed and reaction time. As the targets began shifting unpredictably, I called out instructions. "Don't wait for me to tell you—anticipate the target's movement! Focus on the point of impact. Don't just hit it—imagine the punch going through it."

"Goooo!" Golett growled, shadowy fists darting out like missiles. Each punch connected squarely with its mark, leaving faint scorch marks on the targets.

"Great! Now Mega Punch," I said, switching the targets to moving dummies. This move required more power and precision. "Focus on timing your punches. Hit the dummies at the exact moment of impact. Keep your form tight. No wasted energy."

Golett let out a determined "Goo-leee!" as it adjusted its stance. Each punch reverberated across the field with the sound of steel meeting steel, and the final dummy was sent flying.

Once we finished the basics, we moved on to Golett's elemental attacks. These moves were trickier to refine but offered a lot of utility in battle.

For Magnitude, I set up a grid of pressure sensors across the training field. "Alright, buddy," I said. "The goal is control. We're not trying to destroy the field—just focus the tremor on one section."

Golett raised its foot and slammed it into the ground. The shockwave rippled through the field, but the sensors showed a wide spread.

"Too broad. Try again, but this time focus your energy into a smaller area." We repeated the drill until Golett could localize the tremor, creating smaller quakes that were precise and powerful.

Next was Mud-Slap, a surprisingly useful move for disorienting opponents. I filled a trough with damp soil and set up a row of dummies with targets for "eyes."

"Channel the mud, and aim for the eyes," I said. Golett scooped up mud with its hands, flinging it with surprising speed and accuracy. At first, most of the mud hit the targets, but some splattered wide.

"Better, but tighten your aim. Imagine the mud is an extension of your arm." After several rounds, Golett's aim became razor-sharp, each slap hitting the target dead-on.

For Night Shade, I focused on consistency. I set up a series of dummies and asked Golett to channel its ghostly energy to deal steady damage across all targets. "This isn't about raw power. It's about control. You need to create the same effect every time."

Golett's glowing hands emitted waves of dark energy, hitting the dummies in succession. At first, the strength of the attacks varied, but with practice, Golett was able to maintain a steady output.

Curse was the trickiest of all. The move required Golett to sacrifice some of its own energy to place a debilitating effect on its opponent. I approached this cautiously, ensuring that Golett didn't overexert itself. "Focus inward. You're drawing from your own energy, but only give what's necessary."

Golett clasped its hands together, and its body began to glow with an eerie light. After a few tries, it managed to execute the move without draining too much energy.

After hours of training, I called for a break. As Golett sat beside me, letting out a low, contented "Goo-lett," I found myself staring at its glowing core.

"What are you, really?" I wondered aloud.

The myths described Golett as being animated by a mysterious energy—something ancient and otherworldly. The same texts also mentioned that ghost Pokémon existed in a realm between life and death.

"Is that what makes you so special?" I asked, half-expecting an answer. Golett tilted its head, its glowing eyes flickering faintly. I couldn't help but feel that there was more to it than met the eye.

Just as I was lost in thought, I heard Grace's voice calling out from the estate.

"Master Owen!" she shouted, her tone light and teasing. "A perfect training ends with a Pokémon battle. Up for a sparring match?"

I turned to see her approaching with a Poké Ball in hand, a playful smirk on her face. Golett stood up, clenching its fists in anticipation.

"Well, buddy," I said with a grin, "looks like the day's not over yet."
