Chapter 9: Zubat
"Murkrow, hold on. Keep up the Tailwind!" Aoki encouraged the tired Murkrow.
"Caw!" Murkrow cried out in the air. The battle had exhilarated it. Although it was fatigued, facing the Zubat leader, who was stronger than any opponent before, filled it with unprecedented joy.
Seeing Murkrow's excitement, Aoki's lips curled into a slight smile. Murkrow's combative nature reassured him.
The Zubat leader screeched furiously. It was this Pokémon and this human that had turned it into a solitary commander.
With its relatively high intelligence, the Zubat leader realized that the thin human before it was weak. The blood in its narrow eyes faded as the setting sun energized it, filling it with increasing strength.
Its wings quivered, and a trace of black energy gathered around its mouth as two fangs gleamed ominously. It was preparing to use the Dark-type move, Bite.
Noticing the Zubat leader targeting Aoki, Murkrow quickly intercepted, propelled by the final burst of Tailwind, positioning itself in front of Aoki.
The more dangerous the situation, the calmer Aoki became, maintaining a clear head and absolute composure in the face of potential death.
"Murkrow, use Astonish!" Aoki commanded.
Murkrow, now a black blur, collided fiercely with the Zubat.
"Bang!"
Both figures were thrown back by the impact, showing they were evenly matched.
After a brief pause, they clashed again. Without the acceleration from Tailwind, Murkrow's speed had diminished, yet it remained slightly faster than the Zubat leader. The leader attempted to bypass Murkrow to attack Aoki but was consistently blocked.
As night fell, the Zubat grew more vigorous, while Murkrow, exhausted from the ongoing battle, began to lose strength.
After another collision, Murkrow struggled to rise. The Zubat leader's wings trembled as it stared hungrily at Aoki, seeking sustenance from its exhausted prey.
It lunged at Aoki, fangs gleaming with a blood-red aura, ready to use Absorb.
"Caw!" Murkrow gasped, its wings shaking as it tried to rise. Its chest heaved, and it felt a deep frustration with its weakness. As Aoki's Pokémon, it felt a duty to protect him, and failing in that was the greatest blow to its pride.
But as the Zubat closed in on Aoki, a strange smile crossed Aoki's face. This was the moment he had been waiting for.
"Murkrow, hang in there! Use Snatch!" Aoki shouted, catching a glimpse of Murkrow rising through the corner of his eye.
"Caw!" Hearing Aoki's command, Murkrow gritted its beak, finding a surge of energy. Its wings fluttered forcefully.
The Zubat's fangs bit into Murkrow, expecting to drain its strength. Yet, instead of feeling replenished, it felt its energy ebbing away. The anticipated relief did not come; instead, the vitality it sought seemed to vanish like vapor.
The Zubat leader was stunned. It didn't feel the rush of energy it craved. Instead, Murkrow felt a warm current spreading through its body, revitalizing its strength. The Zubat recoiled, wings faltering as fatigue set in.
Snatch, a Dark-type move, had stolen the recovery effect from the Zubat, reversing their fortunes.
"Murkrow, use Roost!" Aoki instructed quickly, taking advantage of the Zubat's weakened state. Roost, a Flying-type move, would restore Murkrow's stamina by grounding it momentarily.
Murkrow landed in front of Aoki, absorbing the earth's energy, feeling revitalized as strength flowed back into its body.
Seeing Murkrow recover, Aoki gave the next command. "Use Tailwind again, then finish it with continuous Peck attacks!"
The Zubat leader, now sluggish, barely had time to react as Murkrow darted forward. The moonlight glinted off its sharp beak as it struck repeatedly, inflicting wound after wound. The Zubat's strength drained rapidly, unable to defend itself.
Under the relentless assault, Murkrow finally brought down the Zubat leader.
"Caw!" Murkrow cried triumphantly. It felt its wings grow stronger, its claws sharper, and its beak glistened under the moonlight, a reflection of its growth.
Aoki observed with satisfaction as Murkrow leveled up from 10 to 11. Though it was just one level, the progress was palpable.
Every level gained represented significant growth in the real world.
After its victorious cry, Murkrow's exhaustion took over, and it plummeted from the air. Aoki caught it, his eyes filled with concern. The use of Roost had its drawbacks—while it restored physical strength temporarily, it also overtaxed the body, leading to fatigue.
Aoki knew that excessive reliance on Roost could lead to long-term depletion of a Pokémon's stamina, potentially causing it to regress in level. Hence, he used it sparingly.
Fortunately, Aoki was skilled in creating Pokéblocks tailored for recovery. As long as Murkrow didn't overuse Roost, the impacts would be minimal. However, it would still need time to recover, making Roost a last-resort tactic.
Cradling the exhausted Murkrow, Aoki stepped into the Zubat's cave, guided by the moonlight.
The stench was overwhelming, the floor littered with the remnants of Zubat droppings. Resisting the urge to turn back, Aoki ventured to the cave's depths. By the faint light filtering through cracks, he saw the walls covered in scratches, signs that the Zubat were not the original inhabitants. Their presence was a sign that the cave's former owner had either perished or left long ago.
Reaching the deepest part of the cave, where the ground was dry and the moonlight more visible, Aoki found a stone to sit on. It was here they would rest for the night.
Murkrow stirred, hopping from Aoki's arms and nuzzling his hand with its beak, finding comfort in its trainer's warmth.
Sometimes, Pokémon are simple creatures. As long as they are with their trusted trainer, through rain or shine, they remain loyal companions and cherished friends.
