Chapter 105: Krookodile
John squinted at the Mirage Tower in front of him, its ominous shadow stretching across the moonlit desert. This one was different from the last—a little taller, a little more sinister. The entrance was cracked and crumbling, as if daring him to step inside. The tower's level suggestion, LV40, promised tougher challenges than the LV35 tower he'd conquered earlier. Even the name had changed from "Rotten Mirage Tower" to "Dilapidated Mirage Tower."
"More floors, stronger Pokemon, bigger headaches," John muttered, gripping his Gameboy. "Let's see what kind of mess I'm walking into this time."
With a flash of light and shadow, he entered the game, finding himself once again surrounded by a whistling desert wind. The Mirage Tower loomed ahead, its entrance lit with flickering torches. Sand crunched beneath his boots as he stepped inside, greeted by a familiar setup: a brightly lit hall and a staircase leading upward. The only new feature was the Pokemon blocking his path—a hulking Nidoking.
[Nidoking: LV43]
The Poison/Ground-type bared its fangs and let out a thunderous roar, slamming its tail into the ground. The force sent tiny cracks rippling through the stone floor, and John could swear the entire tower shook.
"Yeah, yeah, big scary monster," John quipped, tossing a Pokeball. "Greninja, let's show him how it's done."
In a flash of light, Greninja landed gracefully, crouched and ready. Its kunai gleamed in its hands as it fixed Nidoking with an icy stare.
"Start with Water Shuriken!" John commanded.
Greninja leaped into action, spinning as shimmering shurikens of water materialized in its hands. One after another, the projectiles shot through the air, slicing toward Nidoking.
The Poison Pokemon growled and threw up Protect, summoning an invisible barrier. The first few shurikens slammed into it, ripples of energy spreading outward, but after the third hit, the barrier shattered like glass. The remaining shurikens struck Nidoking's chest, forcing it back a step.
Nidoking wasn't about to back down. Its horn glowed with poisonous energy as it charged forward with Poison Jab.
"Dodge it, Greninja!" John shouted.
Greninja sidestepped effortlessly, its movements a blur. Before Nidoking could recover, Greninja was already in position. It vanished into the shadows, reappearing with kunai slashing in a single, deadly arc. The cut left a deep gash from Nidoking's shoulder to its hip. The Poison Pokemon staggered, then crashed to the ground with a resounding thud.
"Nice work," John said, tossing a Pecha Berry to Greninja. "Poison Point, huh? Figures."
Greninja caught the berry and ate it with its usual cool demeanor, crossing its arms as if the battle had been a minor inconvenience. John tossed a Pokeball at Nidoking and waited for it to stop shaking.
"Double-31 IV attack and special attack," he muttered, checking its stats. "Not bad, but not great. Professor Birch is going to have a field day with you."
He climbed the stairs to the second floor, his boots echoing against the stone. The layout was the same as before, with another staircase leading higher. Standing guard this time was a Krookodile, its glowing eyes watching him like a predator sizing up its prey.
[Krookodile: LV45]
The Ground/Dark-type let out a low growl, its tail swishing behind it like a pendulum. The air around it seemed to hum with tension.
"Alright, Krookodile," John said, cracking his knuckles. "Let's see what you've got."
Krookodile didn't wait. It lunged forward with terrifying speed, claws glowing with Dragon Claw.
"Greninja, evasive maneuvers!" John yelled.
Greninja flipped backward, narrowly avoiding the attack. It landed on its feet, immediately forming several Water Shuriken in its hands. With a flick of its wrist, it hurled the projectiles at Krookodile.
But Krookodile wasn't as easily overwhelmed as Nidoking. With a roar, it swung its Dragon Tail, deflecting the shurikens one by one. The final strike smashed into the ground, sending up a plume of dust.
"Alright, plan B. Greninja, go close combat!" John shouted.
Greninja darted forward, moving so fast it was almost invisible. It feinted left, then reappeared on Krookodile's right, slashing its kunai across the Pokemon's tough hide. Krookodile roared in pain but retaliated immediately, stomping the ground with Earthquake.
The tower floor trembled violently, cracks spreading out in every direction. Greninja leaped into the air, narrowly avoiding the attack. From its high vantage point, it launched a glowing Water Pulse straight at Krookodile.
The orb of water exploded on impact, striking Krookodile square in the head. The Ground/Dark-type staggered, shaking its head as if to clear the ringing. Greninja didn't give it a chance to recover. It vanished into the shadows, reappearing directly in front of Krookodile with its kunai poised. In one swift motion, it delivered a finishing Cut across the chest.
Krookodile let out a final roar before collapsing, its massive frame hitting the ground with a heavy crash.
"Whew," John said, tossing a Pokeball. "You put up a good fight, but now you're mine."
The Pokeball rocked back and forth before clicking shut. John picked it up and checked the stats. "Three-Perfect IV physical attack, defense, and speed. Overconfidence. Not bad."
Still, John hesitated. "You're good, but... my standards are higher these days. Off to Birch you go."
As he climbed to the third floor, he couldn't help but wonder what other surprises the tower had in store. His heart raced with anticipation. Whatever awaited him at the top, he was ready. For John, the thrill of the battle was the real reward.
