Pokémon: The Renegade Trainer

Chapter 21: Battle ends

Cynthia's hair fluttered at the strong hailstorm before her.

There was zero visibility in the field, and slowly, the battlefield started to clear. The blonde trainer clicked her tongue as she realized that Roserade had survived and used [Sunny day].

Shards of ice on the rose-like Pokémon's body started to unfreeze at a visible rate, and returned the lush battlefield.

Both Pokémon were panting, exhausted from the prolonged fight.

"The challenger has made a substitution," announced the referee as she saw a red light enfold Gastrodon and took it off the field.

'Finally.'

And sure enough, it was Gabite that replaced the sea slug.

Moriya's eyes lit up when she saw the new challenger. "Don't let it get close, [Solar beam]!"

"Rose--!" Roserade put both its bouquet-like hands in front and launched a strong beam of solar energy from them.

"As we planned, Gabite."

Sand particles swirled around Gabite before it shrouded the Land shark and eventually the entire field.

[Sandstorm] did much more than cause the first [Solar beam] to miss, it also stopped Moriya from casting another while making Gabite essentially invisible with its Sand veil ability.

"Roserade, return!" Moriya knew how dangerous this position was for her and that Roserade didn't have much defense on the physical side.

"Gym leader Moriya has switched out her Pokémon. This means both trainers cannot substitute anymore."

A large turtle with a tree on its back took the field once the referee finished the announcement. The sandstorm rages on as the battle continues.

"Roaaaa!"

"Gabite, [Poison Jab]!"

"Retaliate with [Earthquake]!"

Moves like [Earthquake] and [Bulldoze] worked like radius AoE attacks that deals more damage the closer the target is to the user.

And unfortunately for Gabite, it took the full brunt of Torterra's attack despite landing a super-effective [Poison Jab].

Both Pokémon took heavy hits. But we're still far from giving up.

Cynthia clicked her tongue, realizing her plan to poison Torterra failed. 'Still, we don't have much of a choice now that it's come to this,' she mused.

"Barrage!" She roared, and Gabite followed.

Gabite launched a flurry of poison-infused strikes at its opponent. It resembled the combo used for [Close combat].

One hit!

Two hits!

Three hits!

It kept tearing through Torterra's defenses at a rapid pace. Moriya tried her best to retaliate, but to no avail as Gabite showed no openings throughout its assault.

And at the fourth hit... Bubbles of poison showed on Torterra's body, it had been poisoned!

However, that was also the last hit Gabite could land. Because like [Close combat], the assault costed Gabite its defenses.

It was now vulnerable, and Moriya wasn't going to miss out on that.

"[Earthquake]!"

Despite almost stumbling due to poison damage, Torterra toughed it out with a roar.

"Torteraaaaa!"

Loud tremors caused the ground beneath both Pokémon to break and Gabite fell victim to a full scale 'big one'.

Seeing the Land shark faint with stars on its eyes, the referee raised the red flag. "Gabite is unable to battle, challenger Cynthia must send out her final Pokémon!"

Meanwhile, at the bleachers...

"Cynthia lost this bout."

Iizumi tried to protest at Maguro who said those words. "But Cynthia can still pull this through with Gastrodon. Roserade is injured and Torterra is poisoned.

"There's still a chance..."

"If you mean a number below zero, then yes. There is a chance." Maguro shrugged.

"I know you mean well Iizumi, but Maguro is right. There's only so much Cynthia can do against big sis who can easily set up the sun and [Solar beam] her slow Gastrodon."

Gardenia added. She had been studying about battle strategies nonstop just to forget the kidnapping incident.

Maguro nodded to this before turning his attention back to the battle.

'Why in the world is she limiting herself?'

Back in the battlefield, Gastrodon was at a face-off against the continental Pokémon.

"[Ice Beam]!"

Cynthia retaliated swiftly, and Torterra fell to a single move. Between its poisoned and weakened state, it didn't take much to finish it off especially with a quad effective move.

"Torterra is unable to battle. Gym leader Moriya must send out her final Pokémon!"

Roserade was ready as it squared up. It was the final bout, and one single mistake could potentially end the match.

The two battlers were at a standoff. Ironically, the slower one to set the weather would win. But, Roserade had different plans as it rushed towards it's opponent.

Moriya smirked in response.

"[Energy ball]!"

But Cynthia wasn't going down without a fight. "[Muddy water]!"

A large wave crashed against Roserade, causing it to lose balance and trip. It launched the sphere of concentrated Grass energy because of this, causing the move to miss it's target.

As it got up, Cynthia wasn't pulling back from her assault and only continued her offense.

"[Blizzard]!" Snowflakes surrounded Gastrodon before they flew towards their target.

"Roserade, blast it off with [Leaf storm]!"

Cold winds imbibed with ice type energies struck Roserade's body, reacting with the water and freezing up the flower.

However, strong Grass-type energy surged through Roserade and tore through the ice. Swirling around its body were sharp leaves that eventually grew in number.

It was no mystery among trainers that [Leaf storm] was just [Razor Leaf] in the millions.

"The Eterna clan is a lineage of gardeners. We've lived alongside grass types for centuries and developed an interest in the move [Razor leaf]."

Swirling around Moriya's Roserade were sharp blades of leaves. It looked almost like a certain Bankai of cherry blossoms, except this one's leaves were green.

"Behold, the force of a million cuts!"

Moriya exclaimed as Roserade completed it's move and a strong tornado of leaves was launched towards Gastrodon.

Cynthia could only watch, wide eyed, as her last Pokémon fell to a devastating attack. Time seemed to have frozen as she couldn't utter a word.

Somehow the flag waved louder than it normally would. But the referee's voice was not audible to her.

"Challenger Cynthia's final Pokémon, Gastrodon, is unable to battle. Gym leader Moriya wins this battle!"

'I lost?'
