Pokémon: Trainer Paul

Chapter 21: Chapter 21: Conway’s Unexpected Strategy

Paul, your Elekid is incredibly strong, but I believe my Pokémon can defeat it without much trouble…"

Conway said this deliberately, hoping to provoke Paul into continuing to use his fully trained Elekid in their battle.

However, before he could even finish speaking, Paul pulled out a Poké Ball and recalled Elekid.

"What? Not using Elekid anymore?" Conway was stunned.

This wasn't what he had expected. Normally, trainers would be eager to prove themselves after hearing such a taunt and would keep using their Pokémon to win.

"You've done your job. Take a rest." Paul said to Elekid's Poké Ball. He then pulled out another Poké Ball and threw it.

"Ursaring, prepare for battle!"

"Ursa!"

As soon as Ursaring appeared, it roared loudly, spreading its intimidating aura across the battlefield. Its massive body delivered a strong visual impact to all the spectators, and its fierce, eager eyes locked onto Conway.

"W-wow… what a huge Ursaring… How is this even possible?"

Seeing the menacing Ursaring, Conway instinctively took a step back, his eyes wide with shock.

"Holy… Wow!"

"Look at that Ursaring!"

"Its presence alone could scare off most Pokémon!"

From the audience came a wave of astonished exclamations as soon as they saw Ursaring.

"Paul has swapped out his Elekid for an enormous Ursaring, which already looks incredibly strong. How will Conway respond?" The announcer's voice echoed through the stadium, heightening the anticipation of the crowd.

"It's fine, it's fine. Ursaring is a Normal-type Pokémon, and its usual moves are Normal and Fighting-type…" Conway muttered to himself, adjusting his glasses as a confident smirk crept onto his face. "Those two types can't harm a Ghost-type Pokémon."

He finally selected a Poké Ball and tossed it onto the field.

"Dusclops, it's your time to shine!"

With a gust of chilling wind, a ghostly figure wrapped in gray bandages floated into the arena. Dusclops exuded an air of lifelessness as it stared down Paul and his Ursaring.

"Let the match begin! The challenger will attack first." The referee declared.

"Ursaring is strong, but it's not particularly fast. However, Dusclops is even slower…" Conway smirked, pushing up his glasses again.

"Dusclops, use Trick Room!"

Dusclops' eyes glowed with a purple light, and a mysterious energy enveloped the battlefield. In this altered space, faster Pokémon found their speed reduced, while slower ones gained the upper hand.

"Bulk Up!" Paul said calmly, unfazed by the turn of events.

"Ursa!"

Ursaring immediately tensed its muscles, boosting its Attack and Defense stats.

"Don't give it a chance! Use Ice Beam!" Conway ordered.

Dusclops raised its ghostly hands, unleashing a chilling Ice Beam that struck Ursaring directly. Despite the blow, Ursaring withstood the attack and successfully completed its Bulk Up, increasing its strength further.

"Fire Punch!" Paul commanded.

Ursaring's fist ignited in flames as it charged at Dusclops, enduring the Ice Beam with brute force.

"Double Team!"

Dusclops' body shimmered, splitting into dozens of clones that surrounded Ursaring.

Ursaring's Fire Punch struck one of the illusions, which vanished upon contact.

"Focus Punch!"

The real Dusclops began charging its energy, its massive hands glowing as it prepared a devastating attack.

Although Ursaring tried to identify the real Dusclops, it couldn't break through all the illusions with a single-target moves.

"It's no use! Unless you have a wide-range attack, you'll never find the real Dusclops!" Conway exclaimed smugly, his glasses reflecting the light.

However, he failed to notice the faint smirk on Paul's lips.

"Foresight!" Paul said.

Ursaring's eyes gleamed with a white light, dispelling all the illusions and revealing the real Dusclops, which had just finished charging its Focus Punch.

"What?! It knows Foresight?" Conway was taken aback but quickly reassured himself.

"It doesn't matter, Ursaring won't have time to attack before Dusclops lands its Focus Punch!"

The arena filled with tension as Dusclops unleashed its fully charged Focus Punch, landing a critical blow on Ursaring.

The attack was super effective! Even with its Bulk Up boosts, Ursaring grunted in pain but stood firm, its body now glowing faintly with a white aura.

"Counter!" Paul ordered.

With a feral grin, Ursaring retaliated its claws slashing upward and striking Dusclops with immense force. The Ghost-type Pokémon was sent flying, landing heavily on the ground, where it fainted instantly.

"Counter?!" Conway's jaw dropped in disbelief.

"Why did I use Focus Punch? If I'd chosen any other move, I might have won…" He muttered, frustrated with himself.

The Focus Punch's massive damage was doubled by Ursaring's Counter, delivering a devastating blow. Even without Bulk Up, Ursaring would have struggled to withstand such a hit.

Conway recalled Dusclops with a sigh, vowing to gather more data before his next battle. After giving Paul a lingering glance, he left the field.

Paul's Ursaring went on to defeat multiple opponents including a Toxicroak, achieving an impressive 10-win streak. However, after pushing through 14 battles, it finally succumbed to the poison inflicted during its last match.
