Chapter 325: Mandatory Evacuations Are Here
The dawns of Saputa usually always brought a calm demeanor in the air, as the growing red and yellow color mixing in with the sky's darkness gave something to look forward to. That was changing in Appleridge, as days of bombardments and assaults kept the atmosphere darker, and ruined those lovely dawns. For Lero, that wasn't a major issue, as he paced about in the living room, with the family caring for him anxious about their situation.
"I hate to tell you guys this, but the situation isn't getting better." Doctor Ben could only shake his head in frustration, "I've seen things I wish y'all never have to."
"I doubt it, I've seen a lot of bloomin' and bloody things in my days." Lero couldn't help but comment.
"We going to make it through, right?" Henry gulped with worry.
"Of course, we absolutely can." Lero assured the kid, as a knock on the door broke the conversation, "I'll go hide."
The man was quick to move around the apartment, as Ben was already standing up to open the door. Lero had to do this a few times when some people would come over, as the family decided that the best place would be right under the bed. It was a tight and dusty place, but no one would bother bending down to check, as Lero entered the doctor's room and got on his knees. He really hated doing this, with him already halfway underneath the frame before hearing the front door creak open.
"Is there a problem, sir?" Lero could hear Ben asking the person outside, the man stifling his breath from his hiding spot.
"We are currently evacuating all apartment complexes located near the fighting, so we are giving everyone thirty minutes to get as many belongings as possible before the military comes and takes over." a Reserve Guard spoke to the father and son, "Before you even ask, the government doesn't have a set date for when you will be able to return."
"Does that mean we may never come back?" Henry looked at the soldier with fierce emotion, his home now being a site for a future battle.
"I can't say for sure kid, but, I don't have any more time to waste, so you two need to hurry." the soldier asserted, just as he was getting called to move on, "I'm going! You guys just get to it."
Ben didn't want to waste any more of the man's time, so he gave this thanks before slowly closing the door. Jamal was really that close to pressing their location? For Lero, that was good and bad news for a multitude of reasons, mainly between the fact that he could finally sneak in Port-O-Bea lines and reach his desired freedom. The downside was him dealing with his very life in a fluctuating battlefield, where any type of weaponry or tactics would be used to gain an upper hand. He could become a casualty before he even reached the promised land.
"I can't believe it." Henry could only stutter out, as Lero was making his way out of the protection, "This is really it?"
"I think so, with everything your mother and I had worked to get, just gone. It's truly a pity, right, Lero? Was this what you wanted?" Ben took a menacing glare towards their guest but showed no hatred or anger through expression.
"No, I wasn't wishing for a bloody takeover for ya homes now! This is madness, do I truly say." Lero shook his head, still struggling to keep his positive thoughts to himself. "I'm here to bloomin' help regardless, it's the least I can do."
"Yeah, you didn't really have a choice anyway. And we'll also have to find a way to get you out of here with us, and we don't have much time to figure it out either." Ben could only sigh out his disappointment, with Henry already moving towards his small bedroom, and beginning to take the most essential belongings down with him, and likely to never see unscathed again.
