Psychic Overlord

Chapter 7: The Officials

"Did they say what happened?" Kaizer asked his parents calmly.

They were used to their son's levelheadedness and did not find it strange that he was completely unfazed by his own near-death experience. Rather, Keith hesitated for a bit before speaking in a low tone.

"They said you were attacked by your date, who worked with a group of car thieves to ambush you. They found the wreck of your Porsche, but they wouldn't even allow me to see the state it was in! I was the one who bought the blasted thing!" Keith muttered angrily.

Kaizer did not say anything more, but his eyes narrowed slightly.

This world… was probably far more complicated than he thought, and not in a political way. Conspiracy theorists of today were busy fighting over family clans that ruled the world and super soldier projects in secret labs, but they had no idea that their wild guesses were probably tamer than what actually existed.

Kaizer's eyes twitched slightly as he saw a scene outside of the ward, where four men in black suits walked down the hallway towards his door. They were speaking softly into their plugged-in earphones while their eyes were covered with shades, but Kaizer could clearly hear what they were saying.

"Another civilian attack. How many does that make this month alone?" The one in the third place of their formation asked coldly.

"It's not a civilian attack. Well, it was likely planned as a civilian attack, but the Dark Esper who initiated it did not expect to be both lucky and unlucky at the same time." The one in last place responded with a hint of morbid amusement.

"Did you see the corpse of the Dark Esper? Wrangled like it had been played with by a miniature giant. That is definitely not something a civvy can do. The boy is likely an Esper or is hiding something." The one second in place affirmed with a casual grunt.

At this moment, their group reached the ward door and the one in the lead placed his hand on it as he spoke softly and with finality. "Whatever the case, we'll be able to find out now. Ian, you're with me. Liam, Harry, you stay outside and make sure no one interrupts us."

The one in second place nodded and followed their leader in while the two fellows in 3rd and 4th position stood on either side of the ward door like bouncers while their compatriots entered. Once the door was opened, the two changed their unfriendly expressions into casual ones that neither signified hostility nor doubt.

"Huh? Who the hell are you and what right do you have to enter my son's private ward? Didn't I warn the staff not to let anyone but family in?" Keith furrowed his brows and stood up, his 'tiger' personality returning.

"Mr. Lunin, forgive us for the rudeness, but this is not something that the hospital can decide on. We are with a special governmental department that tracks terrorist-related incidents, and believe your son might have been involved in a terrorist attack." The leader took out a set of official ID and handed it over to Keith for inspection, calmly taking a seat on the other side of Kaizer.

Hearing the word 'terrorist,' the hearts of Keith and Charlene rushed to their throats with fear, grateful that their son was alive. They mostly believed this too, because the official documentation was legit and the whole sequence of events was too bizarre to be what they previously described it as.

As for a supernatural attack by a catwoman monster that wanted to eat Kaizer alive, they didn't even entertain the notion.

"Why would terrorists attack my son, Officer James?" Keith forced himself to become calm and inquired from the leading man after giving his ID back.

Officer James pocketed his ID casually and gave Keith a very straightforward glance. "Why wouldn't terrorists attack the son of Keith Lunin, richest man in Alpha City? Your company is responsible for the severe advance of technology these past 10 years worldwide, and I can think of more than ten cults that hold you akin to Satan from Christianity in terms of hatred."

The family remained silent at that. This was also the main reason why Kaizer, at the age of 18 years old, was gun-trained and even kept one in his glove compartment. However, years of safety dulled their caution, not to mention that within Alpha City, Keith Lunin's stomps could set level 10 earthquakes politically and financially.

It was not easy to make a move in such circumstances.

"Don't worry, we are here to track the terrorists and bring them to justice. There is no way they can come to our Alpha City with their crazy ideals and do as they please." Officer James continued to say.

Keith released a deep breath and looked serious. "Well, what do you gentlemen need from us?"

"Nothing much, we just want to ask this brave young man a few questions about his assailants in order to ascertain their profiles and begin hunting them down." Officer James made a gesture of harmlessness and smiled at the family.

Keith and Charlene were uncertain about this, sharing a silent look as they contemplated what was best for their son right now. Officer James saw this and made a subtle signal to his partner, who stepped forward with a neutral tone and expression.

"It is not critical that we investigate because these terrorists have made their general objective clear. They are targeting your family. Whether or not you help us is up to you, but if you don't want to see your son in a body bag, you'd best be smart."

Officer James slapped his thigh with fury before anyone could react, standing up in anger. "Officer Ian, speak properly! Stand down immediately!"

This Officer Ian, who had blonde hair and blue eyes along with a bulky build, seemed unconvinced as he stepped back, but he did not even bother to glance at the Lunin family anymore as if they disgusted him. Officer James sighed with fatigue and sat down, his face apologetic.

"Mr. Lunin, Mrs. Lunin, I sincerely apologize for the words and behavior of my subordinate. He is simply on edge because we have been tracking this group for a while, and they diverted our attention with a big move elsewhere before striking at innocent young Kaizer."

Officer James clenched his fists with a look of pain. "We simply must not let another tragedy like this happen again. Today, they spared young Kaizer, but what about tomorrow? Who knows what they will do then? How many innocent lives will be lost that could have been saved otherwise?"

Both Keith and Charlene were deeply moved. They were largely ignorant about the truth of this matter, and Officer James' heartfelt words, coupled with the performance between the two operatives, were so smooth that they felt that this was how things should be.

Kaizer, with a slight smile, suddenly spoke. "It's okay, mom, dad. Let me help Officer James get down to the heart of the matter, so that no one can say we are selfish or uncooperative with the law."

His two parents nodded and stepped back to give them space, but only enough that they were not easily within earshot. They still sat together and watched over their son while whispering to each other, wearing worried expressions for the future.

Officer James, however, chuckled lightly. "Alright son, let's begin."
