Chapter 641: Stark's Deeds Catch Up to Him!
The man in the video, Adrian Toomes, is a typical middle-aged, working-class American white male.
Born into an average family and lacking higher education, he could only take on cheap, labor-intensive jobs. In his youth, he worked hard and saved up some money, got married, and started a family. But with that came the heavy burden of supporting them.
As he grew older, Toomes began dreaming of taking one big shot—something to improve his and his family's lives significantly.
Such decisions are often all-or-nothing gambles. Toomes had poured all his life savings into the "salvage" business. But just when things were beginning to pick up, trouble came knocking.
Faced with a group of well-dressed, overbearing middle-class elites, Toomes, a small-time figure from the bottom rungs of society, knew they were not on the same playing field. Even though he had already signed a contract with the city government, contracts meant little in a society where "rule of law" is often a farce. Corporate greed and legal loopholes were everywhere.
Toomes, having been in the game for years, understood the darker realities behind the scenes. He didn't even bother contesting the validity of the contract. All he could do in the face of his powerful competitors was appeal to their sympathy.
Speaking earnestly, he pleaded, "Ma'am, please, listen to me. For this job, I bought trucks, hired these men—they all have families to feed. So do I!
I've put everything into this. If I lose this job, the bank will take my house. My wife, my kids… we'll have nowhere to go!"
The "ma'am" in question was the leader of this uninvited group. Though she was older, her attire and demeanor were impeccable, exuding the air of a corporate or political power player—a classic example of upper-class poise.
In response to Toomes' desperate pleas, the woman's expression remained stoic. Her voice was cold as she said, "I'm sorry, but there's nothing I can do to help you."
Next to her, a man in a sharp suit sneered disdainfully, "Next time, don't bite off more than you can chew."
Toomes, already simmering with rage, couldn't take the insult. Unable to hold back, he threw a punch at the man. But before he could follow through, he found himself staring down a dozen guns pointed straight at him. These weren't people Toomes could afford to provoke.
Even though he was boiling with anger, Toomes wasn't a fool. He knew that resisting further would only get him riddled with bullets. Though humiliated, he had no choice but to swallow his pride.
The "noble" woman in charge, however, didn't push things too far. She instructed her people to lower their weapons and then coldly told Toomes, "I'm just an employee. If you have a problem, take it up with my superiors."
Her "superiors" were no small players. They represented a collaboration between Stark Industries and the federal government—a division called the "Department of Damage Control" (DODC). This department specialized in cleaning up the aftermath of alien invasions and superpowered battles.
Watching the video, Pietro let out a sarcastic laugh. "Look at that—Stark Industries ruins lives wherever it goes! This Adrian Toomes is clearly Vulture. He had a stable, honest job to support his family, but Stark Industries had to ruin it, forcing him into a life of crime!"
Toomes' situation hit a nerve with Pietro, reminding him of his and Wanda's own experiences. They, too, had suffered at the hands of Stark Industries. Though Wanda had let go of her grudges, Pietro still couldn't forgive what they had endured. Naturally, he felt some sympathy for Toomes.
On the other hand, Stephen Strange was more pragmatic. Raising an eyebrow, he said, "I'm not a fan of Tony Stark, but I have to admit—some things are best left to professionals.
The Chitauri wreckage isn't safe. If ordinary people handle it, accidents or disasters are inevitable. In this case, I actually support the Damage Control department's decision."
Back in the video, after the DODC left, Toomes and his crew were left jobless. They were also ordered to surrender all the alien materials they had collected over the past few days.
The Chitauri technology was more advanced than Earth's at the time, and even the leftover scraps were unusual and valuable.
After thinking it over, Toomes decided to secretly keep some of the materials. He was smart—if the proper route was closed off, he'd find another path.
Looking at the alien materials, his determination reignited. With a smile, he said, "The world has changed, and so should we."
The scene then cut to eight years later.
After losing his legitimate job, Toomes had successfully built a new, albeit illegal, business. He gathered a crew and began stealing alien artifacts from the DODC, modifying them into advanced weapons, and selling them on the black market for massive profits.
Toomes himself was highly skilled. Using the alien technology, he crafted a suit that allowed him to fly and maneuver with precision. When he donned the suit, he truly looked like a vulture.
The video explained the series of events that led Toomes down the path of crime. While Tony Stark wasn't entirely to blame, Stark Industries and the DODC's heavy-handed methods had undeniably destroyed Toomes' livelihood, pushing him toward illegal activities.
History has shown time and again that unemployment is a dangerous issue. Mishandle it, and you might spark a revolution.
Naturally, viewers outside the video had their own heated debates.
Some argued that Stark and Stark Industries couldn't be blamed. Toomes had no moral boundaries and no respect for the law—at heart, he was a bad person. Why blame the man who saved New York? If it weren't for Tony Stark risking his life to carry a nuke into space, the entire city would've been destroyed!
Others, however, believed Stark and his company couldn't shirk responsibility.
The idea of the Damage Control department was well-intentioned. As Strange pointed out, letting experts handle these issues could reduce risks.
But the execution was flawed. Good intentions alone aren't enough; proper management is essential. Otherwise, even the best ideas can backfire—a truth proven countless times throughout history.
Tony Stark, with his penchant for being a hands-off leader, bore at least some responsibility for hiring the wrong people and letting things spiral out of control.
