Chapter 4: Fortune favours The Bold
"It's almost scary..."
All four of my physical related Stats entered the thousand realm, thus giving me the physical prowess of a D-Rank Warrior and with Bladework's new enhancements, as long as it's active, my Strength, Speed and Intelligence Stats increase significantly .
"Although, it kinda does makes sense why I gained so much this time around now that I think about it. Even though my life wasn't necessarily in eminent danger, it was still more challenging fighting the Warriors than it was fighting the monsters. It's not about the difference between fighting Warriors and fighting monsters specifically but about the level of difficultly, meaning I could still gain a lot more if I fight stronger monsters too. I don't wanna have to go around on a Warrior killing spree just 'cause it can make me stronger. That's some straight up Dark Warrior behaviour typa shit right there. I'd have to go incognito, completely off the grid, living my life on the run so to that, I say, no thank you."
Furthermore, with Bladework being an A-Rank Skill, my fighting prowess also becomes average A-Rank level.
An F-Rank with the Strength and Speed of a D-Rank and the fighting skill of an A-Rank.
"Isn't this a little broken...? Seriously, just what the heck is the Blacksmith Class??"
"Hoo, let's not dote on it any further. Now then, all that's left is for me to clear this Dungeon. Since Dungeon Bosses are always one Rank higher than the Dungeon itself, the Boss of this Dungeon should be D-Rank, right? I already fought a D-Rank Warrior and since the only monsters that tend to be stronger than Warriors of the same Rank are S-Rank, I'm not worried."
I teleported my blade in my Item Space which had also increased in Rank then quested on. My speed had increased significantly so I really wanted to test it out, in doing so, I started running. It felt amazing. My legs moved faster than anything I'd ever seen before. My body felt incredibly light, like it was being carried. I jumped a few times while running, the view from above was to die for, the cool breeze engrossing my hair and face made me feel peace unlike any other.
"This is nucking futs! Whoooo-hooo!"
I felt a childish smile form on my face. I was elated. I had deactivated my Bladework Skill but my Treasure Hunt Skill was still active. I could see multiple other mines from below, but none exuded the aura of where a Dungeon Boss might be. I kept running, passing by multiple other Werehyena packs, along with a few herds of those buffalo look-alike monsters here and there, as I kept jumping up and down, I was also frequently met with odd looking bird monsters that kind of resembled vultures. Ignoring all these creatures, I then activated my Bladework Skill simply for the purpose of moving faster. The difference was visible, an exponential increase in speed. I then noticed something odd. As I was running, it became incredibly quite, I couldn't hear anything, not even the sound of my own footsteps.
"No way! Did I just break the sound barrier!?"
Surpassing Mach-1 speed threw me off a little. I just couldn't believe it. Finally coming across a cave that felt a little more ominous than the others became the perfect excuse for me to try and ignore what had just happened.
[Report. Advancements in the Subject's overall Warrior info have been detected as a result of recent actions.]
"Seriously? What don't you get from 'excuse for me to try and ignore it'!?"
~Sigh~
"So a certain level of physical exertion counts as training too. Guess that makes sense. Fiiiine, let's see what you have for me..."

"It's not necessarily much but I'll take it!"
I stopped near the cave entrance then deactivated the Bladework Skill but kept Treasure Hunt on. As I was about to enter the cave, I was met with an immediate ambush. About twenty Werehyenas, all alphas, cornered me.
"Mhh, maybe I should try and see how well I'd do without my blade this time."
I took a boxing-like stance and uttered...
"Bring it."
They attacked immediately. I launched a punch to one of them on its face, it flew about ten metres sideways and did not get up afterwards.
"Ohhh!?"
I salivated. Killing an alpha Werehyena with my bare hands, now that's not something you can just take away from me. I felt inspired. By myself of course...
"Alrighty! One down, nineteen more to go!"
Two of them jumped at me from both sides, I moved back a bit then used both my hands to grab each of them by their necks then bashed their heads against one another. I heard the sound of their skulls cracking as a result, but I wasn't about to let them go. I used both of them to hit the others, each time I did that, their bodies were falling apart little by little, but the ones that were being hit just received minor injuries without dying so I finished those ones off with kicks from every direction. After that I let the ones I held by the necks go and their bodies fell flat like sacks of potatoes. There were six of them left then. They started backing up, hesitating to attack. So I started stomping down multiple times while whistling, edging them to come at me. They all attacked in unison. I took them all out, each with a single punch.
"Now, then let's collect some crystals."

"Brawler huh? Sounds interesting. Sounds very interesting. It's E-Rank right now...so if I use it against a D-Rank monster and WIN then won't it increase significantly in Rank? Heh, alright then, now we have a plan."
I started heading inside the cave through the tunnel leading underground. It was a lot similar to the first one but differed in size, I'd estimate at least three times bigger. As I arrived at the edge, I saw the mine. At the far end of it, there were a bunch of large rocks grouped together, on top of them was a very large Werehyena, sleeping. I guessed that was the Boss.
"A throne made of rocks, we've got a cocky one over here."
This mine looked at least 5 times bigger than the previous one. And the number of Werehyenas aside from the Boss was annoyingly huge and their coordination looked somewhat scarily a lot more organised and orderly than that of the Werehyenas I've seen before. To be specific, I counted a hundred alphas and ten more Werehyenas that were slightly bigger than them but still smaller than the Boss, about five times smaller I'd say.
"I've never seen those ones before. Just what are they? Looks like each one of them has a group of ten alphas that they command. So, what then? Commander Werehyenas? Captains? Squad leaders? Let's call 'em squad leaders for now. So that's a hundred alphas, ten squad leaders and one Boss. Now what about the normies....no way. Five hundred?"
Five hundred normies, a hundred alphas, ten squad leaders, and one Boss. That totalled 611 Werehyenas. That number alone scared me a bit.
"Starting to doubt if I can really do this. Facing off against one D-Rank monster plus six-hundred and ten E-Rank monsters really doesn't sound like some walk in a park. I was stupid to expect the Boss to be alone. I really wanna increase Brawler's Rank but ain't this a little too much? I mean won't there be other chances for leveling up? The moment I jump down this tunnel's edge, the Quest will start, which means I can still bail if I wanna....but! Do I really want that!? To just run with my tail tucked between my legs? Yeah no! That's not me! Not anymore! Now or never, it's time to be bold. Afterall, fortune favours the bold!"
After that declaration, I jumped down the edge, entering the mine and did an even grander superhero landing than before, totally reforming the surface I landed on. I was pumped.
I let out a long exhale. Then readied my self taking a boxing-like stance.
[Report. Subject has entered the Cold Iron Mine: The Werehyenas' Dungeon Boss, The Great Werehyena's Den. Subject will now recieve an Immediate Quest...]
[Immediate Quest contents.]
Immediate Quest: Subject must clear the E-Rank Dungeon. For that to happen, subject must exterminate the Dungeon Boss, The Great Werehyena, all ten of the omega Werehyenas, all one hundred of the alpha Werehyenas and all five hundred of the normal Werehyenas in the mine within the given time duration.
Duration: 5hours
Upon Success: The E-Rank Dungeon will be cleared.
Upon Failure: Subject will die.
Rewards will be calculated after the Quest is completed based on the Subject's efficiency.
"Wow, five hours. That duration alone screams danger-level difficulty"
As soon as the message disappeared, all the Werehyenas looked straight at me. The Boss then woke up almost immediately. It's soul-piercing scarlet eyes staring straight at me. It then moved its head as if signalling the Werehyenas to attack me. The alphas and squad leaders or rather omegas, stayed behind. Seemed like they were more than confident that five hundred normies were enough to take me down. Wouldn't blame them. Even I had doubts if I could take them all on but if I don't try, then I'll regret it. My life is on the line here. I'll struggle till 'the end of days' if it comes to it. An entire army of five hundred Werehyenas started charging at me. They'd even constantly topple over one another but that didn't stop them. I felt like backing up but then remembered a certain saying I've heard from somewhere; if you feel like taking a step back, take two steps forward. So I did just that. Next thing I knew I was running full speed ahead to what might quite possibly be my death. So I gathered as much Mana as I could on to my fist, activated my Brawler Skill...
"Now, let's see just what exactly you're made of newbie Skill of mine."
Then launched a punch. It wasn't directed at any specific Werehyena. What happened next honestly scared me. A rain of blood, what looked like nearly countless guts and dog body parts fell down and some splattered across the terrain. The enemy forces were reduced to about 70 maybe 60%. 180+ normal Werehyenas were dead. Additionally about 50 to 60 alphas all died without even getting the chance to do anything.
"You're kidding! One single punch did that!!?"
I couldn't believe it....
"Ohhohoho...ohhhohohohohhah...ohhhohohohohhahahohh! Heh-heh-heeihh! This is gonna be fun."
~Slurp~
I licked my lips and smiled. Then, sparring not a single second to waste, charged at the Werehyenas that were left. They all looked baffled at what had just happened, especially the Boss. I still don't know why that weirds me out, it's not like they're mindless beasts so of course they're aware of what's happening. Their viciousness tends to throw me off really.
Anyway. I started doing the same thing I did before. I gathered loads of my Mana onto my fists then punched away continuously. All the normies attacked ever so vigorously then the alphas also joined in while the omegas and the Boss watched. They surrounded me from all sides attacking almost in unison. Some would constantly climb on my back and try to bite my head off while others went for my legs so to solve the first problem I'd allow myself to fall hard on my back and for the second, gather Mana onto my feet then use the Brawler Skill to kill them all with kicks of incredible force and power. I continued with my fist full assault, punches coming from all directions, elbow blows, headbutts, knee hits and uppercuts for all those who came too close for me to launch a straight forward punch. None of the punches I launched were aimed at any specific Werehyena though, each punch took out a large number of them but I then noticed something strange was beginning to happen. Each time I punched, the number of how many Werehyenas fell at once decreased, one time it was about fifty then went down to about thirty, then twenty. Until it came at a point where all the Werehyenas I could take down with each punch was at most twelve or ten. The punches took a lot of Mana and stamina also and since my Mana is the lowest of the low, all I was left to rely on was my stamina, an aspect of my Health Stat which, while significantly above that of average Warriors, was not enough. There were about 80 normies and 15 alphas left, I hadn't touched any of the omegas along with the Boss so it was fair to say I was in quite the tough spot considering how my efficiency was depleting. Worse enough, the Boss noticed. So it then signalled all the normies to start attacking more violently. I was getting tired, significantly tired. Sweat ran down my head as I was beginning to gasp for air. The number of Werehyenas I could take down with each punch dropped straight to one and then to zero as my punches started to merely injured them by sending them flying without killing them.
"Crap, this is bad."
Ten normies then jumped at me forcing me to fall on my knees as I covered my head with my hands and arms. Brawler and Treasure Hunt both deactivated. I felt indescribable pain as they continuosly gnawed and clawed at my back and arms. Piercing into my very skin, their claws and teeth even reaching my bones as blood dripped out continuously from the wounds.
"Shit, is this really how I'm gonna die? No, I can't accept it! I won't accept it! Not like this, not after all I've been through! My ambitions, my resolve, my will! You think I'm gonna let a bunch of mangy mutts turn it all into nothing! LIKE! HELL!"
Mustering all the strength I had left, I busted out of their pin, stood up and flinged my arms out with amazing force and delivered a war cry.
"GET THE HELL OFF OF MEE!!!"
The force alone created a powerful shockwave that sent all the Werehyenas surrounding me flying ten to twenty metres away. I looked at all the wounds they inflicted on me.
"God! This hurts like a biatch!"
The bleeding wouldn't stop and I started to feel a slight dizziness as I grabbed my head with my right hand.
"Still though, it's weird. It doesn't look like they were trying to kill me. Did they want to just tire me out then send me to their Boss so that that bastard would launch the finishing move? If that's the case then..."
I looked at the Boss and gave the bastard my own dose of a soul-piercing gaze.
"You're really going to regret making that decision..."
The Werehyenas weren't attacking anymore, they just stood there staring at me, wary, as if they were trying to decide whether or not I may still pose a threat. I was bleeding a lot and couldn't even stand straight signalling a weakened state but my face, my expression...screamed anything but.
"Hoo, one-thousand two-hundred and forty Intelligence Stat and what do I have to show for it? A half-assed use of Mana simply because I was too excited about gaining a new cool Skill. Seriously, I should take these wounds as punishment for my ignorance. But now that that's out of the way, a reward for my reflection? Mhh, enlightenment sounds about right. That thing I did before I gained Sunset Slash increased both my instincts and sensory perception and made them one. I think I should call it Astral Unification. It had that much of a crazy effect and that was before my Treasure Hunt Skill even reached B-Rank and my Intelligence Stats entered the thousand realm, so if I do it again now what with all my physical related Stats in the thousand realm plus my high-ranked Treasure Hunt Skill then..."
I tried it out.
Second time doing Astral Unification so I didn't close my eyes since I had gotten the hang of it. I inhaled and exhaled a few times, calmness unlike any other permeated throughout my very soul. My self-awareness spiked up once again. I activated my Bladework Skill to increase mainly both my Health and Intelligence Stat then activated my Treasure Hunt Skill and a buckload of information then entered my brain, I could see everything, hear everything, feel everything, all that was under the Treasure Hunt surveillance was under my watch. The info was enough to make any normal human being go mad but with all my physical related Stats in the thousand realm playing a part, especially the Intelligence Stat, my senses were heightened beyond measure instead of them going haywire. Again, my brain was the source, from it, Mana circulated throughout my entire body. The manifestation of one's subconscious mind creating a connection between my instincts and self-realisation, making them one. I then finished the preparations as the Astral Unification from before was complete but I didn't feel satisfied. It felt imperfect, like there was room for improvement. I realised that I had only noticed it now due to my increased Intelligence Stat. Then the more I increase said-Stat, the more I can understand about Mana manipulation I figured. So I went ahead and tried to improve the Astral Unification.
"The Mana being circulated is, similar to the one I had gathered to my fist when I launched those punches, raw. But unlike the one being circulated, the one from the punches was being, in a word, 'wasted'. All I was doing was making it burst at large quantities with each punch in an attempt to increase the firepower, but I can still achieve the same effect and still save considerable amounts of Mana. If I take the circulated Mana, fine-tune it, increase its concentration and density then...whoa...! Ue-freaking-rica!"
I felt an incredible sense of relief overflowing through my body. As if a number of impurities within my body were being washed away. My wounds slowly started to heal as the bleeding stopped while the Werehyenas started to look a lot more wary than before, but I doubted the Astral Unification would give me regenerative abilities, rather it seemed like something that only happened due to the 'enlightenment' so it wasn't guaranteed if it'd happen again anytime soon thus I prevented myself from getting my hopes up. What mattered was that I was back to full strength so I stopped the Astral Unification and then checked out the changes it brought. All my senses were almost ten fold greater than before. My Treasure Hunt Skill was still active so I activated the Brawler Skill in addition, gathered Mana onto my fist. The nature of said Mana had changed significantly to a more dense and concentrated form. This time I wasn't gonna let it explode with every punch. Rather I'd keep the Mana circulated on my fists then only explode the force of my punches, generated by the Mana through each clash. The Mana was in the form of multiple circles surrounding the fists constantly rotating at alarming speeds.
Looking at all my foes, those damned mutts, I stuck out my left arm, bent my right arm moving it backwards, and did the same with my legs too. A stance that basically screamed; "this punch is for the big leagues". The Werehyenas started backing up as if they instinctively knew they weren't safe. The words I uttered next, while they weren't whispered, it was indeed a Special Attack...
"Demolition Strike."
~Boom!~
A wide area shockwave. Multiple times more powerful than any of the punches I had launched before.
4 omegas, all the alphas that were left along with all the normies that were left. It took them all out. The surrounding mine walls even started cracking and breaking apart as some chunks of Cold Iron even fell from them.
"Again."
"Demolition Strike."
I directed it towards the Boss. That sly dog, he responded quickly by jumping away from his "throne" of rocks. The same couldn't be said about the 6 omegas that were left however so they all perished from the force of the shockwave.
"Now it's just you and me..."
As I said that, he growled and charged at me. I responded in kind as our bodies then clashed. He jumped back a bit afterwards then jumped up to come down and attempt to crush me with his huge claws. I put both my hands out raising them and they collided with said-claws. He started pushing down to try and squish me so I circulated the Mana that was in my fists throughout both my whole arms instead. The Mana made it look like multiple snakes were constantly slithering around my arms and hands. Gathering a ton of strength, I increased my grip on his claws, digging my fingers into them as blood spat out. He squealed in response then tried to separate his claws from my hands but I was like 'Nuh-uh, fam'. So I kept digging my hands in until I could grab his bones from the inside. Pulled as hard I could then delivered a hard kick to his jaw as his teeth clashed with one another and the jaw broke entirely. I then let go of his claws in an attempt to jump him and launch a surprise attack but he quickly escaped by jumping backwards creating an incredible distance between us.
"Gotta say, you're one big fella."
That was no exaggeration. He was about five times bigger than omegas which were 50% bigger than alphas which were also 50% bigger than normies, and normies were a little over half my size. So that'd make him a little over five times my own size.
Green Mana started forming around his broken jaw and bleeding claws, the bleeding then stopped and his jaw healed back to normal.
"No way. A regeneration Skill? So it's true that Dungeon Bosses actually possess Skills."
To be more specific rather, in Dungeons Ranked F to B, only Bosses have at least 1 or more Skills while the normal monsters don't have any. And in Dungeons Ranked A and above, all monsters including Dungeon Bosses have Skills, and the number of Skills that they have is determined by their position in the Dungeons' hierarchies so naturally the Bosses would have more Skills than all the other monsters.
"It's even theorized or rather, rumoured, that if a Warrior defeats a Boss alone then they'll gain some if not all the Boss' Skills depending on the compatibility between the Warrior and the Skills, but not a lot of people have actually done that for there to be sufficient proof, either some Warriors actually gained a new Skill and decided not to share that info or they didn't get anything and just told it like it was. Well, time to confirm that right now, if I can get a regeneration Skill then hooray for me..."
After he finished regenerating, he charged at me, I responded in kind. To my surprise, his speed then increased drastically as grey coloured lightning covered his whole body, in his scarlet eyes, small green lights quickly sparked then dispersed. And he attacked with a slash using his right claw. My Bladework Skill which increased my Speed Stat by a thousand making it over 2000 allowed me to dodge the attack just in time by bending over backwards and sliding away. However the attack came very close to decapitating me. I got up and turned around to look at him.
"So that's the power of the Great Werehyena, huh? That's nuts. Three in total. A regeneration Skill, a speed Skill and a perception Skill that increases attack precision. I want them all!"
I ran full speed towards him, he may have been significantly faster than before but he was still slower than me overall, that last attack just caught me by surprise is all.
As I charged at him, he couldn't react in time, I doubted he could even see me move considering I was moving at Mach-1 speed. I quickly appeared mid air in front of his head, jumped at it, rapping my arms around its neck and squeezing as tight as I could with the idea of strangling him to death. He struggled but didn't die.
"Resilient bastard! Am I gonna have to cut off your head or something!? Fine then!"
I squeezed his neck even tighter. Hearing his bones crack and break, I hurriedly grappled his neck and yanked off his head from his body, the body then moved around vigorously for about a few seconds tops then he finally died.
"Finally!"
I got up afterwards, and stood on his corpse.
"Urgh, I've got my and Werehyena blood all over me. These clothes are gonna need some serious dry cleaning when I get back. Now then, eyyo! System! Job's done, gimme a message, will ya!?"

"Holy guaca-fucking-mole! That's a lot. I had forgotten about how Dungeon Bosses drop not just monster cores but also parts of their bodies that can be used to make artifacts and weapons. Man, the things I'm gonna with craft with all I've gained today, I honestly can't wait!"
I quickly transported some of the Cold Iron that had fell out from the sides along with all the Boss' drops that I had gotten into the Item Space.
"My Mana Capacity is still incredibly low, far from even the Maximum of F-Rank level. I wonder, what'll happen once I reach it though. It might stop there and not advance any further 'cause of my locked Level Stat! If that turns out to be the case, what'll I do then? Hopefully, reaching the F-Rank turns out to be the requirement to unlocking it. Well, I'll have to cross that bridge once I get to it. Still though, this isn't bad, my physical related Stats half way through entering C-Rank level so as long as Bladework is active, at least two of them come very close. Even Brawler went up two whole Ranks at once! I knew it. High risk, high reward! Since I basically almost died, emerging victorious regardless brought about great gain. I even got new Skills and a new Special Attack."
Electric Mana coating my body and acting as a shield against air resistance didn't seem like it'd really play much of a role considering how my Strength and Health Stat made up for it though but all in all, with Hypermove, I could increase my speed drastically and with Resilient Regeneration, as long as my heart and brain are in tact, I wouldn't have to worry about any injuries, external or internal.
"Soul-Piercing Eyes will work well with my Intelligence Stats too, specifically in increasing it which will then increase my efficiency in Mana manipulation plus Astral Unification, which is something I just made up on the fly also got turned to a genuine Skill as a Sub-Skill of Cultivator which even formed a small Dantian for me. There's also a high possibility that Demolition Strike can be more powerful with fist related weapons. I could gain new Skills too. Ohh yeah! Now we're cooking! Now then, I've spent way too much time here, time to leave this Dungeon."
Bearing a colourful, childlike smile on my face, I made my way to the portal I previously used to enter the Dungeon in the first place.
"To think, I really cleared an entire E-Rank Dungeon on my own, and on my first try at that! Maybe just maybe, I can actually survive in this crazy eff'd up world."
