Chapter 1 - Prelude I

"...ther."

A sweet, sing-song voice called out through the haze of his half-asleep state.

"Good morning, Brother."

Brother…? That couldn't be right.

Slowly, he tried opening his eyes feeling disoriented from the weird-like dreams he has experienced.

As he did so. His mind raced. He didn't remember having a sister.

Wait… no, that's not right either—

But the voice of the girl couldn't have been bothered as she didn't know what was going on in his mind.

"Wake up, or else you'll be late for school, again."

The teasing voice made his eyes twitch as he groggily opened them fully.

What greeted him was the cliché most were used to seeing already… an unfamiliar, yet oddly familiar ceiling.

A room that was his that felt distant, but somehow felt cozy and comfy.

And there, leaning over him, was a face he couldn't mistake.

Curious, mischievous, and undeniably cute.

Her dark hair framed her features perfectly, tied into twintails that swayed as she moved.

Crimson eyes that fit her just perfectly.

He froze.

His mind scrambled, piecing everything together.

…Where was he?

No.

'That wasn't the right question.'

He knew where he was... It was just that he remembered now, more than he should have.

But… why now?

Why, after so many years did this suddenly—? After so much time, close to that time, did he awaken—

Naturally, his face paled as those thoughts flashed across his mind.

However, "Brother? You look like you've seen a ghost."

Her voice startled him slightly, pulling him back to reality with her voice filled with concern as she moved closer to him.

Her hand extended towards his face, but as she did, she paused.

Then—

"Oh my…. Oh my, my… Could it be… you've finally realized how lucky you are to have such an adorable sister waking you up every morning?"

Her lips curled into a sly smile, and she leaned away from him slightly.

She was giggling as she did so, which made the boy heave a sigh of weary.

Yup. This was definitely his sister.

He thought, before muttering, "… sorry, Kurumi."

Forcing himself to push those building thoughts to the back of his mind, he said that calmly.

"Well, I'll forgive you once more for waking up late."

She smiled at him, pulling away, satisfied that she had managed to wake him.

Yes. It was just as one might hear it.

He was Kurumi Tokisaki's older brother.

Though he said older, he was only ahead of her by a single year.

Their parents must've gotten real freaky after his birth or something.

But that wasn't his concern here. The real issue was why now?

Why, after all these long years, did these memories of his' resurface?

Memories of a different world. To describe it—those memories, it was nothing but pure apocalypse for him.

…Tokisaki Ikari.

That much, at least, he knew. But knowing didn't make it easier.

"Hey, Kurumi."

His voice left his lips before he could even process why he called out to her.

She had been walking toward the door, but at the sound of her name, she paused and turned, her crimson eyes meeting his.

"Hm~? What is it, Brother?"

"No… Just wanted to thank you for waking me up."

He said with a smile, reverting back to the Ikari he had always been to his overbearing little sister.

"Oh, you're welcome, Brother. You'd better hurry, though, or you'll make us both late. But don't worry~ If you're too slow, I'll just leave without you."

Though she said that, they both knew the truth.

No matter how late he was, no matter how much she threatened to leave him, she'd always wait.

With that same playful smile of hers, she turned away from him and left the room.

As she did, Ikari, now left alone inside his room couldn't help but release a sigh of relief.

"Haah."

Kurumi had always been clingy, ever since they were kids. And for him?

Even before these memories returned, he had always cherished and doted her.

But now…. Knowing what she'd become in the near future filled him with dread.

Enough dread that would make him loathe the world in anger.

Not just her—Sawa too.

It would have been better if he didn't know. No. It was even worse if it was that.

But fortunately and unfortunately, he knew.

He knew what would happen to her in the coming months. Maybe even sooner.

"Tsk. Damn it."

Bringing his hands to his face, he tried to calm the storm of emotions within him.

'Different' lives' worth of anger, fear, and desperation swirled in his chest.

"At least," he muttered to himself, "she hasn't come into contact with her yet…"

Yes. At the very. There was still some time before it came to that.

And how could he be so sure?

Both her eyes still had that beautiful crimson glow he loved.

That was how he knew.

But then again… he couldn't help but feel conflicted.

He didn't want her to get those power of hers that would consume her life force.

He didn't want her to meet that woman who would turn her, amd not just her, but all three of them's fate upside down.

But on the other hand…

He wanted her to have the strength to protect herself.

But…. "Is that too much to ask for?"

There was simply no way to go about this. Not that he could think of.

He clenched his trembling hands together, his nails digging into his palms as he closed his eyes.

But he already knew the answer. There was only one way to save Kurumi and Sawa.

No matter how much he hated it.

He may, have to be the one those two would lose…. As much as he hated it.

"But it hasn't reached that yet. Haah."

Releasing a sigh in frustration, he glared down at the ground.

"So, it all comes down to that huh?"

His voice trailed off as he sat in silence before getting up from bed.

There was no use sulking about it.

… It didn't take long for him to get ready and slip into his uniform.

Once dressed, he paused in front of the mirror. Now that he had a free moment, he examined his reflection.

He looked like the male version of his sister—messy black hair that suited him well, and those same crimson eyes, like hers.

"No wonder they always say we look alike…"

The dumbass is just realizing….

Tilting his head to the sides, he looked at himself in the mirror. Studying his features.

But soon enough—

"Enough of this."

He muttered to himself, heading toward the small bookshelf that sat next to the mirror.

His school bag rested atop it.

Grabbing it, he slung it over his shoulder and made his way out of his room.

By the time he'd arrive downstairs, breakfast had already been served by his sister.

And along side her—Kurumi, he saw another, sitting at the dining table, chatting with each other.

"Eyyy? Is that so?"

"My, my, does Sawa-san think I'd lie about something like that?"

"Hehe~ As expected. How lucky must you be, Kurumi-sSan.

"Haha. I'd say you're more luckier than me~"

A girl with brown hair tied neatly into two braids.

Her face lit up with a bright smile as she spoke to Kurumi.

But then, he interrupted as he approached.

"You two are lively as usual."

Announcing his presence. He made his way to the empty seat beside Kurumi.

"Ikari-san! Good morning."

Sawa greeted him, cheeks turning a slight shade of pink as her smile broadened.

"Good morning, Sawa."

He replied, offering a small smile in return.

Sawa's smile seemed to spread further as a hint of red spread across her face.

Naturally, if this didn't escape him, then there was no way it'd escape Kurumi.

Kurumi—not in anger or annoynace, but playfully—narrowed her eyes slightly at Sawa, then—

"Ahem. Sawa-san, I can't help but believe it, but you've been bold lately."

Kurumi coughed lightly as she said that.

Plus… Her words were paired with a pointed side-eye in Ikari's direction, just as he was about to swallow a piece of toast Kurumi had made for breakfast.

"Hm? What?"

Feigning obliviousness, with a tilt of his head, he then ignored her in the second, biting into his toast as he continued feigning ignorance.

"My~ Pretending you have no idea. How typical of you, Brother."

Her narrowed eyes all but spelled it out. He couldn't help but revert to one of his usual tactics—playing dumb.

And honestly… He already knew about Sawa too, yet—

"Whatever do you mean by that?"

Of course, he replied, leaning back slightly, mustering his best look of confusion, continuing his act of playing dumb.

Feigning ignorance had always been his go-to move, and today was no exception.

It wasn't just her teasing that made him play dumb.

The truth was…

Liking his sister was strange enough, but adding her friend to the mix…?

Well… while he already knew for a long time now, he just wasn't ready… yet.

But now, knowing of their respective futures, he should—

"Oh, brother, what shall I do with you."

Perhaps because he'd fallen silent uncharacteristically, Kurumi leaned closer, her shoulder brushing against his.

She didn't say anything, but he didn't need her to.

He understood what she was trying to convey in that small gesture.

And then—

"Hehehe."

Sawa's soft laughter broke through the moment, drawing both of their attention.

"You two are so cute together."

Sawa said so, giggling as though she'd just told a funny joke.

Kurumi's expression shifted, her eyes narrowing slightly as a playful smirk curled on her lips.

"Cute, you say? My, my, Sawa-san, you really do have a way with words."

She didn't deny it, nor did she shoot the statement down—she'd always been like this.

Ikari could only shake his head, reaching for another piece of toast as the atmosphere shifted back to its usual liveliness.

'Times like this make me the happiest.'

The current most luckiest guy in the world couldn't help but think so at this time.
