Chapter III - Prelude III
It was afternoon.
School had just ended, and the teacher had already left the classroom once the final bell rang.
Ikari stood up from his seat, slinging his bag over his shoulder as usual.
"Yo! Hika! Already running home, I see..."
A classmate approached him.
One of the few who made an effort to chat with Ikari on a regular basis despite Ikari always ignoring them to go off in his own world.
"What do you want? I'm busy. Make it quick."
Ikari responded, raising an eyebrow.
Although he didn't intend to sound hostile, his tone came off that way.
"Iya—"
The blond-haired boy shook his head, waving a dismissive hand.
"It's nothing serious. I've just always wondered where you rush after school."
He then stepped closer to Ikari intrusivly, prompting Ikari to take a cautious step back.
"I saw you with two girls yesterday. You looked completely different around them. I was shocked."
The blond-haired boy didn't seem bothered by Ikari's lack of friendliness.
Truthfully, he didn't expect Ikari to actually even entertain him, that is, hearing him out like so—
After all, Ikari was quite popular, even at this all-boys school.
Excellent grades and remarkable athletic abilities; most of his mates even saw him as a superhuman.
Add that to his reserved demeanour, and hardly anyone could figure out how to approach him.
But yesterday, the blond-haired classmate had spotted Ikari with two very attractive girls.
Instead of that usual guarded look, Ikari had been smiling and openly expressive.
"It was really surprising... I thought I was seeing a ghost."
The boy commented with a sheepish grin.
"Hey, hey, by the way—who are those two girls? Your girlfriend's? Yeah, I'm kind of jealous."
The blondie continued on, nodding between his words.
In response, Ikari shot him a cold, silent glare.
"Are you sure you want to know?"
Ikari's ominous tone and glare made the blond hesitate.
It wasn't a hostile glare or anything; it's just that whenever it came to both of them, he's as protective as a mother hen.
When he was still a young boy, he had once asked why he was named Ikari.
However, his father had said such words:
"Oh. That huh? I see; you must think the Ikari in your name means "anger," because of it's kanji huh? I don't blame you."
"However, that's not entirely the case. Your mother and I originally desired for the kanji of your name to be "anchor." However, "anger" is not bad too, no?"
"How about it, son?"
His father had said so back then, ruffling his hair.
While his name had two different kanji, he himself liked both, meaning his name embodied.
"Anchor" and "Rage".
Though it may seem as though the rage doesn't fit him, however, when it came to Kurumi….
He couldn't help but be defensive.
"On second thought… never mind."
The classmate said quickly, putting up a hand in surrender.
'Uwaaa… That was intense.'
The boy thought. It was like he could feel the air getting hotter under Ikari's gaze.
Still, from that interaction alone, it was clear something was up.
Maybe he should try following Ikari one day just to find out more…
"No, that would be going too far."
The blond-haired boy thought to himself.
"But at least I have something to talk— no, start a conversation with him about, now."
It wasn't like he and Ikari were close.
This was one of the first times they'd actually engaged in a lasting conversation.
But there was something interesting about the quiet boy everyone held in high regard.
"Hehe…"
"Anyway, I'm off for the day."
The blond-haired boy announced, waving as he walked to the sliding door and left the classroom.
"…"
Ikari kept his gaze on the spot where his classmate had just been.
Slowly, a tiny smile crept onto his face.
'Girlfriends, huh? That would be nice—no… what am I thinking?'
His smile faded, replaced by a frown as he brought a hand to his forehead.
'This is not the time for that…'
After rummaging in his bag, Ikari retrieved his phone and sent a quick message to Kurumi, letting her know he was on his way.
The all-boys school Ikari attended was roughly twenty minutes away from the all-girls school Kurumi and Sawa went to.
Every afternoon, Ikari would make a trip like this to their school to meet them, waiting outside until they finished.
And today was no different.
In just a few minutes, Ikari had arrived outside the all-girls school, standing at his usual spot near the gate.
"Hey, look, it's him again."
"Tokisaki-san looks as cool as ever."
"Do you think he notices us staring?"
"Of course he does."
"Just go talk to him already, an "hi" is enough!"
"N-no way! The other Tokisaki-san is scary enough, and Yamauchi-san will chew us out!"
A group of girls stood a short distance away, whispering and squealing amongst themselves as they stole glances at Ikari.
While many admired him from afar, approaching him was another matter entirely.
There had been a time when a few of them had tried to ask Sawa about Ikari.
What they hadn't expected, however, was Sawa's response.
The normally cheerful and approachable Sawa they'd known had put on a yandere-like expression so chilling, it sent shivers down their spines.
Sawa's words were like so: "If you even think about going near my man, you're done for."
And she had thus said.
Furthermore, yes. Sawa had been becoming a little too yandere for him lately.
But her aside.
Though they were intimidated by her, that warning only made them more curious about Ikari.
Who was he, really, and why was someone as kind as Sawa so different when it came to him?
But not that they would ever get the answer.
Less than three minutes later, Kurumi and Sawa exited the school building, walking toward the gate.
As soon as they spotted Ikari, they both made a beeline for him, greeting him with hugs from either side.
The girls who had been watching from afar immediately erupted into another round of excited squeals.
"KYAA~!"
"They look good as usual!"
"Ah~! The dashing Tokisaki-san~ You look as cool as I dreamt of you."
"Huh? Creepy!"
"W-what do you mean creepy! It's a romantic dream I had dammit!"
"That's even worse….."
Of course, if one were to ask Ikari, he'd mostly say they're over-exaggerating.
Rather, unlike his almost sarcastic way of thinking, he had truly been blessed by good looks, much like Kurumi, his younger sister.
There's no way a girl as beautiful as Kurumi, if she had an older male siblings wouldn't be good looking, like her.
On that note. Yes—!
He had handed a fair share of heartbreak to quite a number of females already.
"Brother, it's only you that can make such a ruckus."
Needless to say, Kurumi was already used to such a thing.
In their first year, the first time Ikari had come to pick her up, she had way more people approaching her with questions the next day because of him.
"Huh? What?"
Of course, other than him being this hard-headed in this department.
As long as it's anything related to that department, he'd put on the most oblivious facade ever.
"But, well, I also like this part of Ikari-san."
Sawa muttered loud enough for Kurumi alone to hear her, and Kurumi couldn't help but giggle.
There was that too. And she one hundred percent completely agrees with Sawa.
"We do have similar taste, don't we, Sawa-san?"
"Yes~ yes~ Kurumi-san."
Both of them had said that and began giggling, making some ufufufu sound, which only made Ikari raise an eyebrow.
Scratch that—
He had an inkling of what they were talking about.
But to avoid responsibilities for now, he kept on that oblivious face, of course, for now.
"Let's go home now, shall we?"
"No!"
Ikari had suggested, but all of a sudden, Sawa had rejected the idea.
She paused, looking at Kurumi before slowly glancing at Ikari, then slowly, a red hue crept up her face.
"No, no, I didn't mean it like that!"
She waved her hand frantically as she shook her head.
But Ikari and Sawa had an amused smile on their face, almost bordering on a teasing grin.
"Ah, no, that… I want to stay over today!"
"Uhm, Sawa-san..."
Immediately Sawa had began saying that, Kurumi had called out for Sawa; sensing where this was going.
But—
"It's definitely not because I want to spend more time with Ikari-san or anything—"
"Sawa-san!?"
"No, I mean, that's part of it! But I also want to spend more time with Kurumi-san too, and—"
"Sawa…."
Perhaps, for a moment, she had forgotten they were still on their school grounds.
Naturally. All the female students there had heard this.
'Ahh. Crap.'
They all had frozen on their spot, looking over the normally cheerful Sawa making such outbursts.
More so, what she said…
Does that mean Sawa really was—"Kyaaaa!"
Before even Sawa could drown in her embarrassment, hearing the scream coming from behind only made her more embarrassed.
"Ikari-san, Kurumi-san, let's leave!"
In a blushing mess, she had pushed both of them out of their school as they heard lingering voices from their back.
"Kya~ A sleepover with Tokisaki-san!"
In that moment.
Two girls had even acted out a dramatic scene, one holding a rose in their mouth as they reenacted a confession.
"You arr mai hearto."
The said girl with the rose in her mouth held another, with the one being held looking at the one holding her with a delicate expression.
"T–Tokisaki… san."
Naturally, those were their delusions about this, not that they were entirely wrong; Ikari would have just said it in a different way.
And as for the trio.
As they distance, leaving behind Kurumi's and Sawa's classmates filled with wild delusions and exaggerated fantasies.
Ikari sighed, casting a glance at Kurumi and Sawa.
"You're going to regret this tomorrow, Sawa."
"I already regret it now!" Sawa wailed, burying her face in her hands.
Kurumi simply laughed. "Don't worry, Sawa-san, this isn't the end of the world."
"Ahhh. Kurumi-san!"
