Chapter 438: Chapter 439: The Primeval Sun God of Another Dimension
In the star realm, akin to a silvery void, the flow of time stands still.
On the crystal island crafted by Ioelum, the King of Arcane Arts and the dragon discuss the myriad mysteries of magic, just as they did long ago. Most of the time, Ioelum speaks while Garon listens intently, pondering deeply.
After several days pass in the world outside the star realm, Garon successfully masters heavy magic.
"Your capacity to learn magic has always amazed me," Ioelum remarks quietly, observing the silver dragon who is manipulating a viscous, tar-like magical force between his claws.
"So far, that seems to be the case. Acquiring knowledge might be considered one of my special talents," Garon responds, playing with the heavy magic.
Heavy magic, akin to resonant casting, is a unique secret technique, not as cumbersome as the Ascension Art.
Now, Garon understands the essence of heavy magic. It's simple, essentially highly concentrated high-energy magic. A bit of heavy magic contains many times more energy than regular magic. If a spellcaster could convert all their magic into heavy magic, they would almost never need to worry about their reserves of magic in battle.
However, the simplicity of heavy magic doesn't mean it can be transformed at will. Randomly compressing magic can lead to explosions if not handled correctly.
If it were contained within the body, it would be like stuffing oneself with tons of explosive material, ready to detonate at any moment.
What Ioelum had done was through repeated experiments, find the most stable form of heavy magic and ways to soothe it. Even so, mastering heavy magic still requires exceptional mental will.
"Heavy magic doesn't enhance me much since my own magic is already plentiful," Garon muses silently, putting away the heavy magic. "But for other true dragons, it would likely be more effective."
Every true dragon is a proficient spellcaster. Garon estimates that except for a few with particularly poor magical talent, most true dragons should be able to harness heavy magic with their strong wills.
"Heavy magic, combined with the Dragon Magic Network..."
"If a spell-proficient true dragon had high-level access to the Dragon Magic Network and learned heavy magic, they would become an unrelenting magical bombardment machine on the battlefield, never having to worry about running out of magic again."
After several trials, Garon is quite satisfied with heavy magic.
It's no wonder heavy magic could imbue Ioelum with divinity. Any creature mastering heavy magic wouldn't have to fret over insufficient magical power during battle.
For a typical spellcaster, casting their highest-level spell could consume nearly half their magical reserve, usually allowing for only one such casting in a direct confrontation.
"Moreover, not just for spellcasters."
"Since heavy magic is viscous like a solid and harder to manipulate than regular magic, the most crucial aspect of controlling it is a resilient mental will. Other creatures that command magic, as long as they possess a robust spirit, could also harness heavy magic."
"Even knights who have endured rigorous training could likely manage heavy magic."
If a regular profession wishes to defeat a heavy magic user of the same level, they must strike quickly and decisively. Otherwise, as the battle drags on, their magic wanes while their opponent remains robust, leaving them without hope.
During this time, Ioelum is perusing the book of resonant casting techniques that Garon brought.
After reading, Ioelum thoughtfully says, "This casting method can maximize the advantage of numbers and groups."
"With resonant casting, a high-ranking spellcaster, along with a sufficient number of ordinary casters, could unleash spells of legendary power."
"Even without a high-ranking spellcaster, if there are enough low-level casters, they could achieve the same effect."
"If there were an infinite number of casters united, regardless of their levels, they might even stand a chance against a deity."
Ioelum's expression turns grave as he seriously asks Garon, "Where did you obtain this resonant casting technique?"
"A super magical empire no less significant than the current Netheril Empire," Garon replies.
Ioelum nods, then continues pondering and slowly says, "The core factor of resonant casting is the Alpha Bloodline. Just from what's written in this book, I can sense the uniqueness of the Alpha Bloodline."
Garon grins, "Yes, it's a casting method exclusive to the Alpha people."
"I'm now considering modifying the foundation of resonant casting to replace the Alpha Bloodline with the True Dragon Bloodline."
The Alpha Bloodline is indeed formidable, but the blood of true dragons is no less exceptional. In the Alpha Tyrian Empire, there's a spellcaster ratio of five to one, but every true dragon can become a seasoned spellcaster if they choose to delve into magic.
"It's worth a try," Ioelum states.
After a
pause, he looks towards the silver dragon and asks, "After it's successful, I'd like to adapt resonant casting for Netheril's arcanists to use and spread widely."
"Of course," Garon waves a claw, agreeable. The Netheril Empire is, to some extent, Garon's magical refueling station—a mutually beneficial relationship. Garon is keen on seeing its prosperity.
"Take this memory crystal for now and look through it yourself. It contains spells I find quite useful," Ioelum instructs.
"With your magical learning talent, having the appropriate spell structures should be enough for you to learn."
"If you encounter any difficult areas, I'll explain them to you."
"I need to study resonant casting closely now. Its principles are simple, but the simpler it is, the harder it is to make significant changes."
Ioelum extracts a drop-shaped memory crystal from his dimensional space, containing a vast array of spells, about the size of a baby's palm.
"Is this for me? Nice, I'll take it," Garon says, picking up the memory crystal. As he infuses his psychic energy into it, he reviews the countless spells within, pleased.
Ioelum glances at the shameless dragon and remarks, "I'm just lending it to you for now. I put a lot of effort into selecting and recording these spells. With a true dragon's memory, you should be able to remember them after one look."
"Stingy."
After muttering, Garon closes his eyes and begins memorizing the magic within.
The spells preserved by the current Ioelum are either high-level or have special effects, all relatively new and outstanding.
Among them, Garon is most interested in the ultra-high-level spells uniquely created by Ioelum.
Now that Ioelum has reached the level of near-lesser divine power, it means that the King of Arcane Arts's mastery of magic can now contend with lesser gods.
This is an extraordinary achievement.
In the main timeline, Garon has never heard of any spellcaster who could rival a deity.
Perhaps there are such beings, but Garon has not witnessed them himself, nor are there specific rumors.
The essence of magic is an insight into the multiverse's rules. All deities, in fact, command advanced magical techniques, able to interfere with rules and manipulate the operation of magic, especially those with a magic authority, who can directly forbid magic.
For instance, the Goddess of Magic, Mystra, could prevent any creature from using magic in her presence with just a thought, even other deities.
There are numerous deities with magic authority, including the chief deity of elves.
However, the Goddess of Magic is the strongest and unique because her authority represents the essence of magic's existence, whereas other deities' magic authority is more superficial.
But regardless, even opposing the most ordinary magic authority could suffocate the strongest spellcasters with despair.
Merely the shield formed by divine power could invalidate most spells.
"However, Ioelum's spells seem truly capable of allowing him to combat deities."
Garon seriously examines the most potent spells in the memory crystal.
Fourteenth-level spell: Momentary Ascension Art.
This spell is modeled after the Ascension Art and temporarily transforms a spellcaster's magic into divine power, allowing them to cast spells with divine power and greatly enhance their magical effects.
Fourteenth-level spell: Divine Shield Decryption Art.
This spell can analyze shields formed by divine power, allowing the spellcaster's spells to break through divine shields.
Fourteenth-level spell: Temporal Fracture Art.
Garon is all too familiar with this spell, for it was an idea he proposed during his last visit while discussing temporal magic with Ioelum. Ioelum has perfected it into a spell capable of truly threatening deities.
"The spells are quite good, but they seem of little use to me," Garon concludes honestly.
Ultimately, these spells are intended to enable spellcasters to battle with gods. However, Garon, being a near-lesser divine power entity himself, possesses various abilities to rival gods, thus he doesn't really need the spells crafted by Ioelum.
"It never hurts to have more skills, learn them anyway, you never know when they might come in handy."
With this thought, Garon settles down to study the spells in the memory crystal.
On this crystal island, the silver dragon lies coiled on the ground, eyes closed as if asleep, while nearby, Ioelum's eyes shine brightly, his body occasionally flashing with magical symbols and patterns, silently calculating how to replace the bloodline restriction in resonant casting.
Time in the prime material world quietly flows by.
Garon's life here becomes repetitive and dull yet fulfilling.
Most of the time, Garon stays on Ioelum's crystal island in star realm projection, learning the various spells recorded in the memory crystal. Whenever he encounters tricky sections, Ioelum's presence nearby makes it convenient to get
explanations, so his progress in learning new spells is rapid.
When he feels bored with continuous spell learning, Garon's spirit returns to the prime material world.
Curious, Garon visits places in this dimension like the Continent of Noah and the Lava Demiplane, which he has experienced in the main timeline.
After a long period of studying magic, Garon decides to relax and is struck by the idea of visiting the planet Kara.
"The Primeval Sun God, always hiding somewhere."
"I wonder what the situation on Kara's planet is like at this time. Maybe I can vent a bit on this dimension's Kara."
With this thought, Garon's spirit returns to the prime material world, and he locates Kara's planet.
However, trying to pinpoint its location confirms that this dimension's Kara is under the control of the Primeval Sun God, as Garon, familiar with Kara's planet, feels resistance during the process.
Passing through the invisible barrier-like resistance, Garon confirms the direction of Kara's planet and constructs a time portal to arrive there.
In a world engulfed in perpetual darkness, the roars of aberrant beasts fill the air, and the sight is dominated by thick black mists, devoid of any light.
Here, darkness is light.
Suddenly, a streak of silver light appears in the sky.
A silver-scaled dragon appears in this dark world, like a silver moon hanging in the sky, immediately attracting the attention of countless aberrant creatures.
After a moment of eerie silence, the monsters' roars intensify exponentially.
Arriving on Kara's planet, Garon surveys his surroundings. His eyes beam brilliant light, scanning the densely packed aberrant creatures below, while he casts a spell of light, making his body burst with brightness, soon becoming as blinding as a small sun.
Light provokes hostility from aberrant creatures.
This is something Garon has long known.
"Perfect, let's test the spells I've just learned on you," he mutters, looking at the countless, layered aberrant creatures.
Garon then chants silently, pumping heavy magic.
As the final syllable of the incantation is uttered, a massive rift hundreds of miles wide tears open in the sky covered by endless darkness.
Suddenly, a sun-like apparition emitting intense light emerges from the rift, appearing almost like a bizarre eye.
Fourteenth-level spell, Eye of the Sun!
Garon expends the power of time, casting Overlay Magic.
Instantly, the originally dark world is nearly filled with light.
The silver dragon spreads his wings wide, with dozens of Eyes of the Sun suspended in the sky behind him, coldly observing the world below.
The continuous roars of the aberrant creatures turn into sizzling sounds at this moment, as if scorched by high heat. White smoke rises from their bodies, their expressions twisted in pain.
"Since you despise sunlight, taste the power of the Eye of the Sun."
Boom!
Streams of blazing light, like celestial waterfalls, burst forth from each Eye of the Sun, descending to the ground and crisscrossing mercilessly under Garon's will. The surging flames cover the landscape like an apocalyptic tsunami.
Wherever it passes, whether mountains, forests, rivers, or even legendary-level aberrant creatures, are instantly turned to ash.
Fourteenth-level spells, when cast in the prime material world, feel like the descent of a deity because they are so powerful they're restrained by the rules of the material realm. Even so, they display effects far surpassing ordinary thirteenth-level spells.
With Garon's current strength, eradicating a prime material world on his own wouldn't be too challenging.
Time silently passes.
In just a few seconds, countless aberrant creatures are purified and die.
The Eyes of the Sun continue to emit flames, seemingly never ceasing.
At this moment, the remaining black mist gathers like a living thing, compressing into an egg-shaped sphere, pulsating like a heart, emanating an evil, chaotic, dark aura from within.
"I am the Primeval Sun God, the first light of darkness."
"Presumptuous and ignorant intruder, you've entered my world, slaughtered my children—I shall grant you eternal darkness."
Hearing this familiar voice and feeling this familiar dark fluctuation, Garon's eyes light up.
He had made a grand display specifically to draw out the Primeval Sun God.
"First, let's collect some interest."
Garon's gaze locks onto the egg-shaped sphere, and behind him, each Eye of the Sun rotates, directing a surge of intense light toward it.
Hiss, hiss, hiss.
Under the enveloping endless flames, the black mist is evaporated layer by layer.
In just a moment, the nascent avatar of the wasteland god is destroyed in the womb, turned to ashes by the Eyes of the Sun.
"Ah?"
A will imbued with astonishment emanates from the ashes.
Simultaneously, more black mist spreads and descends,
trying to coalesce again, but unable to withstand the bombardment of dozens of fourteenth-level spells, it's purified and cleared each time it appears.
"Stop wasting your power. Your avatars are too weak."
Garon, in high spirits, shakes his head and says, "Ya'heng, if you have the guts, come here in your true form and fight me."
Silence.
After a brief silence, the spirit of the Primeval Sun God responds.
"You know my true name, but you do not exist in my memory."
"Who are you? If you are an old enemy, show your true face."
Garon, with a defiant attitude, says, "Less nonsense. Either give up this world or come in your true form and try to stop me."
"You're not scared, are you?"
As he speaks, Garon massively consumes heavy magic, the light from each Eye of the Sun intensifying, rapidly thinning the black mist on Kara's planet, which is visibly disintegrating under the impact.
The Primeval Sun God cannot fathom Garon's strength.
Although infuriated by the devastation and purification of its cultivated world, it definitely won't come in its true form.
There's a risk of death if it's a trap.
"Very well, I have noted your appearance and essence."
"I will make you understand that provoking an ancient primal chaos god is not a wise decision."
"In the future, you will live in fear."
After dropping a fierce threat, no matter how Garon provokes, the Primeval Sun God no longer responds.
"Couldn't lure out its true form to test its combat strength. What a pity."
Garon uses the Eye of the Sun to cleanse the world engulfed in darkness and then leaves satisfied.
In the following days, Garon's life again settles into calm.
He spends most of his time in the star realm, studying the spells recorded in the memory crystal.
During this period, Karsus visits the crystal island a few times, once even bringing the Goddess of Magic, Mystra.
When she sees Garon, the Goddess of Magic curiously asks, "You must have implemented the magic network in your timeline. How has the Goddess of Magic reacted there?"
Garon tells the truth.
"I didn't expect that in the timeline where I died, the Goddess of Magic who inherited my authority would be so timid."
After learning the general situation, the Goddess of Magic shakes her head, her words stern, "If it were me, even if a major godly system wanted to shake my authority, they would need to think carefully about the consequences."
Decades pass, and Garon has mastered all the spells in the memory crystal that are worth learning.
During this time, Ioelum has perfected the resonant casting method driven by true dragon bloodline and handed it over to Garon.
"I've spent a total of over a hundred years in this dimension. About a year must have passed in the main timeline."
The silver dragon looks out at the magnificent scenery of the star realm, deciding it's time to leave.
In fact, Garon has spent more time in this dimension than in the main timeline, but he generally devotes himself to studying magic here, akin to secluded meditation, without any noteworthy experiences. The events here are far less rich than those in the main timeline.
After saying goodbye to Ioelum, Garon leaves the star realm, stepping through a portal in the material world.
"Hey, hey, hey?"
"It seems I forgot to return the memory crystal to Ioelum. Well, I'll keep it safe for him for a while."
In the last second before the portal closes, one can faintly hear the dragon's murmuring.
