Reborn as a Space Mercenary: From Salaryman to Galactic Legend

Chapter 82: Chapter 82: Mobilization and The Fortress of Steel

The forward operating base was a hive of activity as guild mercenaries and resistance fighters gathered for the assault on Rath Zorrek's mines. Vehicles hummed as supplies were loaded, engineers checked their plasma weapons, and medics prepared kits for the inevitable casualties. Despite the chaos, the atmosphere was tense and focused. Everyone understood the significance of what lay ahead.

Tala Ryn, the resistance commander, stood at the center of the operations tent, dressed in a sleek tactical combat suit that emphasized functionality and adaptability. Her sharp green eyes studied the holographic map hovering above the table, showing the sprawling expanse of Zorrek's fortified mining complex. The network of tunnels and surface defenses marked a daunting challenge, even for a well-coordinated assault.

Flanking Tala were two D-Rank mercenaries: Zyrix Korran, the calm and methodical sniper, and Ogmungals Foons, the towering Ghorvan powerhouse. Zyrix's silver armor gleamed faintly under the glow of the hologram, and his plasma sniper rifle rested against the table, ready for the mission. Ogmungals, with his gray hide and imposing frame, towered over the others, his massive energy hammer strapped securely across his back.

Tala gestured at the map. "This isn't just a mine, it's a fortress. Zorrek has turned it into a stronghold with Syndicate reinforcements, automated defenses, and terrain that favors the defenders."

The hologram zoomed in, showing the intricate layout of the mines. The entrance was a heavily fortified canyon with reinforced gates and energy shields. Turrets dotted the ridges, their barrels programmed to fire at anything that moved. Combat drones patrolled the perimeter, while mines and automated traps lined the approach.

"The outer defenses are just the beginning," Tala said, pointing to the deeper parts of the complex. "Inside, we'll face choke points designed to funnel attackers into kill zones. Toxic gas vents and unstable tunnels will add to the danger. And Zorrek himself...." she tapped a red marker in the command center "he'll be waiting with his elite forces."

Zorrek's name carried weight. A former gladiator in Kynara's brutal underground arenas, he had built a reputation as a ruthless combatant who relished violence. His control over the mines was absolute, enforced by fear and sheer power. Stories of his savage punishments were enough to keep his workers in line and his enemies wary.

Among the E-Rank mercenaries gathered for the assault were Dax and Leena, both familiar faces in the guild. Dax, now utilizing heavy-weapons, adjusted the harness of his plasma launcher with a practiced hand, his usual easygoing demeanor replaced by a rare seriousness. Beside him, Leena checked her portable med-synth, a compact device capable of synthesizing treatments on the fly. Her lightweight armor was designed for speed and agility, allowing her to navigate the battlefield and provide aid without drawing too much attention.

"You nervous, Leena?" Dax asked, his voice low as he loaded a fresh energy cell into his launcher.

"Always," she replied with a small smile, securing the med-synth to her belt. "But someone has to keep you idiots alive."

Zyrix, nearby, smirked faintly. "Try not to need her help too soon, Dax. We've got enough to worry about without dragging you out of a mess."

Leena rolled her eyes but couldn't hide her amusement. "Just stay out of the line of fire, and we'll all be fine."

Ogmungals, who had been silent up to this point, spoke in his deep, gravelly voice. "Stick to your roles, and we'll survive. Distractions will get you killed."

The holographic map shifted to display the plan of attack. Tala pointed to the outer perimeter. "We'll start with a hybrid approach. Resistance demolition teams will create diversions, targeting the supply depots and drawing their forces outward. Guild mercenaries will focus on disabling key infrastructure, turrets, drones, and shield generators."

Zyrix studied the map. "I'll handle the sniping. Take out turret operators and disrupt their patrols."

Ogmungals nodded. "And I'll lead the breach team through the main gate. We'll draw their fire while your squads handle the critical systems."

Tala's gaze hardened. "This won't be easy. Zorrek's forces are prepared, and Commander Kharis's reinforcements will make this even worse. But if we can take this stronghold, we'll cripple their operations across Kynara."

She looked around the room, her voice steady. "Many of us won't make it back. But every turret we disable, every soldier we take down, it's one step closer to freedom for this planet."

The fighters responded with quiet determination, each one understanding the weight of her words.

As the first rays of dawn illuminated the desert, the joint forces moved out. The mines loomed in the distance, a hulking fortress of steel and rock nestled within the canyon. Turrets rotated methodically, and combat drones buzzed through the air like mechanical wasps.

The resistance's artillery teams opened fire, sending plasma rounds crashing into the outer walls. Explosions echoed across the canyon, and Syndicate turrets sprang to life, returning fire with relentless precision.

Zyrix and his sniper team took up positions on a nearby ridge, targeting key defensive emplacements. With a single shot, Zyrix disabled a turret's power core, causing it to sputter and die.

Ogmungals led the breach team forward, his energy hammer smashing through barricades and clearing the way for the demolition crews. Dax provided suppressing fire with his plasma launcher, while Leena darted between cover, tending to injured fighters with her med-synth.

The Syndicate's response was brutal. Drones descended in swarms, their alloy-enhanced weapons cutting through the resistance lines. Syndicate soldiers armed with experimental gear pushed back hard, forcing the attackers to fight for every inch of ground.

After hours of grueling combat, the joint forces finally breached the outer perimeter. The cost, however, was steep. Resistance fighters and mercenaries regrouped at a forward position within the fortress, their numbers significantly reduced.

Tala surveyed the battlefield, her expression grim. "This was just the first step. The real fight is still ahead."

In the distance, Zorrek's command center loomed, its reinforced walls defiant against the chaos unfolding around it. The battle for Rath Zorrek's mines had only just begun.
