Episode 28
Chapter 28
“Are you… okay?”
“…That’s my line!?”
When Alshade’s eyes finally focused after just waking up and not fully grasping the situation, she suddenly sat up and grabbed my shoulder, shouting loudly.
“Ah, sorry.”
Whether it showed on my face or not, I apologised to Alshade with a look of regret.
Alshade, who had been in a panic, seemed to have calmed down a bit. She looked at me with concern, not even minding the cold.
“…It’s cold… What’s happening? The back of my head hurts, and you’re all battered…” Alshade asked seemingly confused.
“I remember now. I fought against the Hyann’s knight, and then Finbul went berserk… Hey, what happened after that?”
She seemed to have recalled the situation before losing consciousness.
Alshade asked me with a tremor in her eyes.
She probably already has an idea, but she might not want to believe it. Her face showed a desperate expression.
I could lie here. But even if I do, she would see right through it, and it might hurt her more.
Steeling myself with a different determination than when I fought the giant wolf, I tried to speak, but fatigue and pain made it difficult to articulate.
“…”
“It’s okay. Your reaction is enough. But first, let me cast a healing spell…”
Alshade, who tried to use healing magic on me after holding my hand, was shocked.
Despite her surprise, she didn’t stop casting the healing magic, and my body was enveloped in warmth.
The pain seemed to subside slightly.
“I knew you were in bad shape, but your left arm and ribs have cracks, and your whole body is covered in burns and frostbite! What happened to the potion!?”
Alshade, who completely grasped my condition after using healing magic due to the slightly dim lighting caused by the destruction of magical tools, exclaimed in astonishment.
Panicked, she reminded me of the existence of the potions. I had completely forgotten about it
“(I think the potion is in the left pocket of my pants…)”
I directed my gaze to the left pocket of my pants, but there was no bulge that should have been the small bottle.
“There they are. Excuse me for a moment.”
Alshade realized where they might have been stored and reached into the left pocket to search, only to find fragments of a shattered glass bottle.
I was a bit disappointed, but she seemed relieved.
“The fact that your bones aren’t broken is thanks to “Guardian” and this.” Alshade mentioned as she reached out to my neck and poured mana into the necklace, adding an additional “Guardian” spell.
“It’s still freezing. The potion must have entered your body from the places where the shards were lodged and repaired you from the brink of breaking… If the potion’s effect still remains, here you can use mine too…”
“(I guess… it was a pretty potent potion.)”
Astonished by the fact that the potion prevented bone fractures, I couldn’t catch the latter part of what she said, and the pleasant warmth of the healing magic made me feel sleepy.
“Wait a moment. I’ll thaw the frozen potion now…”
Alshade took out the potion from her pocket and started to heat it with magical fire.
“(…I hope the bottle doesn’t break.)”
As I watched the scene with concern about the potion’s bottle, I heard a whooshing sound.
“Ugh…!”
An ice-made blade pierced through my back and pierced my side.
As I looked at Alshade, who was in shock, my vision began to tilt.
Trying to change the direction of my falling body to avoid her, I fell to the floor.
“Guardian!”
Alshade cast “Guardian” but it wouldn’t last long.
She seemed to understand that as well, extending her hand to my neck and infusing more mana into the necklace to reinforce “Guardian”.
“Quick, the potion! No, it’s useless . I won’t make it in time! I have to use healing magic…! No, I can’t… I can’t… I don’t want to…!”
Alshade’s hand trembled, and the potion bottle slipped from her hand.
In a somewhat crazed state, she tried to cast healing magic on me.
The mana pouring into my body from Alshade’s tightly clenched hand was undoubtedly healing me, but it seemed that the life force I could call my own was dwindling even faster.
The once cold wound pierced by ice now felt warm. Alshade’s warmth and the heat from the wound were still letting me know that I was alive.
“What is this…?”
My already dim vision darkened even further as a shadow fell over it.
The familiar shape of an ice mass came into view as I could only move my eyes.
[ “Is he going to involve its master as well…? Doesn’t seem to care… Seems pretty pissed off huh.”]
The giant wolf that should have been shattered by Tonitos was looking down at us, lifting its front paw.
Despite having taken Finbul away from Alshade’s hand, I noticed that the swirling cold air around us hadn’t disappeared.
But I deliberately avoided acknowledging this fact.
In the end, not all of my gambles had succeeded; it was half success and half failure.
(“…The goddess of luck is a damn jerk. Is she trying to say that I’m not the main character and can only achieve half of what I want?)”
No matter how hard I struggle, I’ll probably die.
But it can’t end like this. I can’t let it end like this. If the giant wolf swings its front paw in this position, Alshade will definitely be caught in it. I didn’t want to involve my precious partner in my death.
Fortunately, the giant wolf’s movements were slow due to being completely destroyed once.
“…Es…cape…!”
I mustered all the strength and stamina I gained from the healing magic to move my mouth.
If I could, I would have tried to brush Alshade’s hand away, push her away, and create some distance between us, but I didn’t have the strength to do that now.
“No, no, no, no!”
However, like a spoiled child, Alshade shook her head, refusing to listen to my words.
“Damn… You’re… going to sacrifice yourself for me…?” Alshade asked.
“That is… Even if you ask…”
I understand her desire not to lose a reliable partner, but she should have prioritized her own life over mine.
Even in simple calculations, it makes more sense for one person to survive than for both of us to die.
Moreover, unlike me, she still has family. That’s why I wanted her to leave me behind, no matter how much she scolded or tried to do something.
The giant wolf was about to swing its front leg.
Alshade’s voice trembled. One more push.
“…G-Go!”
“I won’t forget your loyalty…”
With tears in her eyes, Alshade reluctantly smiled and let go of my hand, stepping away from me.
As she left, a drop that fell down her cheek landed on my cheek.
“…Phew.”
The giant wolf had already entered the position to strike.
I don’t remember my last moments from the first time I died, but this is my second life after dying once.
Dying so soon might be unfilial, but my deceased mother would understand.
So, let me engrave this second time, the way I proudly faced my death, into my memories.
I lifted my heavy eyelids and caught sight of the giant wolf’s figure in my blurred vision.
The appearance of the giant wolf with its translucent body was frustrating but also incredibly mystical and beautiful.
“Uwoooon!”
Along with a victorious roar, the giant wolf swung its leg down–
“…Sorry for taking so long. You did well.”
—It was all for naught.
After seeing the collapsing ice mass and the figure that appeared before me, my consciousness sank into the depths of darkness.
