Episode 46
Chapter 46
“Good morning, Lady Alshade. Good morning , Lord Rios”
Upon arriving at the training grounds, Orto was already there, noticing our presence and giving a slight nod of acknowledgement.
Despite the cold, Orto was wearing simple clothes – a short-sleeved shirt and shorts – which made me feel cold just looking at them.
However, there seemed to be a reason for his attire; with skillful manipulation of mana, he could envelop himself in mana and not feel the cold.
“Good morning, Orto.”
“Good morning. You’re as early as ever. How early do you usually wake up, Orto?”
Upon closer observation, I could see that Orto was slightly sweating. It’s possible he had been training on his own before we arrived.
Currently, Orto’s schedule consisted of our training in the early morning and serving as Alshde’s guard during the day, leaving little time for his own training.
So, Orto could only have a dedicated time for his training either before we arrived in the early morning or after Alshade went to sleep at night.
“I’m not quite sure. Today, I can tell you by feel, but I was here about an hour before you two arrived. Well, our house doesn’t have a clock, so I can’t give you an exact time.”
“Isn’t it inconvenient without a clock? Should I get you one?”
“No, thank you, Lady Alshade. I can roughly estimate the time from experience, so I’ll be fine. Thank you for your consideration.”
Orto declined gracefully, but in this world, clocks were considered expensive and not readily available to ordinary people.
Normally, one would want such a thing, but perhaps due to its high value, Orto chose not to have one?
“Lord Rios, you seem puzzled. I dislike the feeling of being rushed when I look at a clock. It makes me uneasy. Besides, I don’t want to become overly preoccupied with the passage of time. For someone like me, the town bell’s tolling is more than sufficient.”
I nodded in agreement with Orto’s words.
Since I started living in this mansion, I had felt like I had less free time than when I was living in the slums. So, I could understand what Orto was talking about.
The servants working in the mansion seemed busy, likely because they were conscious of time.
On the other hand, commoners who used time bells instead of clocks as their time reference seemed more relaxed and less punctual compared to the mansion’s servants.
The “time bell” referred to the bells the church rang every two hours from sunrise onwards. Commoners listened to them to know the time, but it wasn’t as precise as looking at a clock.
Perhaps that was why commoners seemed more laid-back.
As a commoner, I had managed to adapt to a life with clocks in about a week, thanks to my memories from my past life. Otherwise, it would have felt hectic.
“Huh? Rio, you think the same way?”
“Yeah. I feel like I’m busier than when I was in the slums.”
“Well, I’ve had clocks since I was born, so it doesn’t feel strange to me. But I see, it’s a matter of perspective.”
Alshade looked a little puzzled by our comments but nodded in understanding.
She had a fundamentally stoic personality, so she might have agreed without fully grasping our viewpoint.
“Right, that’s how it is. Well then, shall we start the morning training?”
“Got it, sensei.”
“Understood.”
As the morning training began, I switched to using honorific language when addressing Orto.
This seemed to be part of the training to transition from casual to formal language when addressing Alshade in public. Since Orto was older, it was easier and appreciated in the end.
“As usual, gradually increase your speed and run twenty laps around the training ground! Begin!”
[[“Yes, sir!”]]
I replied energetically to Orto, but for the first couple of laps, we ran at a pace just a bit faster than walking.
Not immediately increasing the speed was a precaution to prevent muscle strain from sudden intense exercise. Even in my past life, I had learned the importance of warming up.
After completing the first two laps, our bodies had warmed up, and we began gradually increasing our speed.
By the tenth lap, I had reached the maximum speed achievable without using mana to enhance my body.
Now, it was time for the real challenge.
“Here we go.”
As I declared, Orto, who had been observing us running, started running behind us.
“Lord Rios, your body enhancement intensity is too low. At this rate, I’ll catch up!”
Orto, running behind me, pointed this out.
I could easily surmise what would happen if Orto, who was gradually closing the distance between us, caught up, as he held a wooden sword in his hand.
I withdrew mana from my core to increase the intensity of my body enhancement, widening the gap between Orto and me again.
From the eleventh lap onward, I combine my mana-enhanced body with my running, gradually increasing the intensity of the enhancement.
The aim was not to abruptly increase it but to gradually do so, teaching the body to sense the stages of enhancement and improve mana control precision.
So, why was Orto chasing us? It was to ensure that even in a body-enhanced state, we didn’t run with unnecessary ease.
If you knew you would be struck with a wooden sword if caught, you wouldn’t run with a relaxed attitude even in a body-enhanced state, maintaining a sufficient load-bearing speed.
“Last lap, use body enhancement to the fullest!”
At Orto’s command, Alshade and I circulated all the mana we had in our bodies.
“…!”
Our distance from Orto slowly increased, while my distance from Alshade diminished.
This happened every time, and even though I understood that the time we had spent training was vastly different, it was still a bit frustrating.
I couldn’t allow Orto, who had been running behind us, to catch up. Even though I knew we had significantly different training periods, I couldn’t let him catch up to me.
“Gah!”
I could hear Orto’s footsteps right behind me, but I pushed forward and passed the starting point just before Orto could catch up.
“…Haa, haa.”
“…Phew, good job.”
“…Yeah, good job.”
Alshade, who had reached the finish line ahead of me, patted me on the back, panting heavily.
“Lord Rios, you’ve grown remarkably in this short time to the point where I can’t catch you.”
“…I’m surprised too.”
Both Alshade and I were drenched in sweat, but Orto, who arrived from behind, didn’t have a single drop of sweat on his face as he calmly praised me.
This time, I managed to outrun Orto for the first time.
One reason might be that Orto hasn’t increased the upper limit of the speed at which he chases me, but it’s also clear evidence of my own physical abilities improving.
“Indeed, you’ve grown tremendously. Maybe Rio has some kind of blessing gift as well?”
“…Even if he can use mana, my recovery is fast, so it’s possible.”
“(A blessing, huh?)”
In the Wildia Chronicles, almost all the powerful characters had blessings, and the original Rios in the story was no exception.
However, while it was known that Rios had some form of blessing in the original work, the details of that blessing were never mentioned.
As a result, I don’t know whether Rios was born with a blessing or obtained it through great feats, nor do I know the specifics of the blessing itself.
However, based on the content of their conversation, it seems that I naturally possess a blessing related to physical abilities.
It was unexpected news, but it was a relief. Having a blessing or not can make a world of difference.
“It might be a good idea to visit the church to confirm the details of your blessing. How about we go tomorrow?”
“Alright.”
I nod in agreement with Alshade’s suggestion.
The church was a facility I always frequented in the game for matters related to blessings. Now that I know I have a blessing, there’s no reason to refuse to go.
In fact, I’m eager to go right now.
However, things don’t always go as planned.
“Lord Alshade, I apologize for interrupting your conversation, but let’s resume our training. Next is martial arts.”
“Alright. Is Rios okay?”
“Yeah, I’ve recovered quite a bit.”
“Then let’s start by reviewing the basic forms.”
Prompted by Orto, Alshade and I proceed to review the basic forms of martial arts.
However, my mind was preoccupied with the newly discovered blessing.
…After this, Rios got thoroughly beaten not only by Orto but also by Alshade during sparring.
Well, it was a reasonable outcome.
