Chapter 12: Love

Elena's heart pounded in her chest, a frantic rhythm she couldn't calm. Samael's words replayed in her mind like a haunting melody, each repetition unraveling a thread of her composure. For you. Because I love you.

She clutched his hand even tighter than his did hers, "W- What are you talking about Sam? What do you m- mean?" Elena questioned, her voice stuttering, scared and confused.

Why would an ancient, all-powerful vampire even be after her? What could possibly make her so important? She was just Elena Gilbert -- a small-town girl whose life had once been defined by school, friends, and family dinners. There was nothing extraordinary about her. She was just the girl who used to daydream about prom and spend her afternoons volunteering at the hospital. There was literally in her eyes, nothing special about her.

How could someone like her -- someone so utterly normal -- be the center of a prophecy? The only remarkable thing in her life, to her, seemed to be Samael.

His love, his devotion... It felt like the one extraordinary thread in an otherwise unremarkable existence. Maybe that's all she was supposed to be she once reasoned to herself. She, the girl who had the love of a prophesized savior.

But that wasn't so, apparently. She was the very cause of the existence of this savior. But why? What about her could possibly make her worthy of this attention, let alone the target of something so dark and ancient?

"It..." Samael began, but soon, once more, he noticed they were still outside. "Elena, I promise, I'll tell you everything. But first, can we get into the car? It can take a bit to explain everything, and I don't wish to do so in the rain; you could get a cold." Samael told her with incredible gentleness yet enough firmness to ground her and not let her emotions sweep her away.

She absentmindedly nodded, still reeling, still not comprehending and decided to do what she always did these last few months wherein she couldn't function because of terror of the unknown and their dangers, just trust Sam.

He gently led her to his car, and helped her get seated. He entered then into the drivers seat and let out a soft sigh. Inside him a turmoil was raging, questioning if this is truly the right decision.

"Can you tell me now, please?" Elena asked after a couple of minutes of silence, her voice quiet.

"Elena, tell me, what do you know about your family?" Samael asked, his tone soft, measured, attempting to be as gentle as possible during this entire conversation.

"Less, than I should," Elena answered with a shaky sigh, thinking about how her parents hid an entire world right under her nose since she was a little girl.

Samael bit the inside of his cheek at the thought of telling her this, not wanting to hurt her, but knowing its necessary to be able to explain everything. "Elena, I don't know how to tell you this -- I only found out myself, recently -- but you're adopted."

"What?" Elena questioned in quiet disbelief as she turned her face towards him, Samael himself choosing to only look forward, knowing if he looked at her now and saw the confusion and fear, he would stop and may never be able to tell her once more because of his hatred towards her being hurt. And so, he, forces himself to continue, knowing that it is better for her to know the truth.

"Grayson Gilbert, is not your biological father, in fact he is your paternal uncle. Your true father is John Gilbert, his younger brother. You were the result of an unplanned pregnancy caused by John in his teenage years with a woman named, Isobel Flemming.

John knew he wouldn't be able to give you the life you need and at the time your adoptive parents weren't successful in conceiving, so he asked Grayson and Miranda to adopt you as their own, which they gladly did.

The reason I'm telling you this is because everything -- everything I'm about to share with you -- ties back to your mother's bloodline and what it means for you." Samael explains, stopping for a moment to let it all sink in.

Elena herself remains quiet, forces herself to remain grounded and not lash out in denial as she grips Samael's hand, holding it with as much force as she can muster to ground herself and look past her shock, sorrow and confusion, with her trust in him.

"Your mother, Isobel is from a powerful, magical bloodline, called Petrova, though whether that is its original name, I don't know. What I do know, is that the bloodline is the line of the first ever immortal woman, who, nature in retaliation against her and the man she loved's actions against it, created something akin to a mortal version of them. A shadow self.

I, myself, don't understand the details, but all that you need to understand is that sometimes, Doppelgangers of this immortal woman are born. Ones who are their own people, with their own personalities, thoughts, beliefs, and emotions.

And you are one of them. Your blood, like theirs, is a potent magical conduit, a rare and unique force that can amplify spells, bind rituals, and unlock supernatural phenomena beyond ordinary means." Samael continued, starting to tighten his own hold on her hand as he got to this part.

"One of your ancestors -- I believe her name was Tatia Petrova -- was used in a ritual, her blood to be specific, thousands of years ago. This ritual was to place a curse upon Klaus-"

Elena suddenly burst into uncontrollable giggles, "S- So, you're saying, because some woman, thousands of years ago, decided to use the blood of an ancestor of mine in some satanic ritual, I now, have an ancient immortal vampire after me? Needing me someway to break said curse, most definitely in a way that kills me?" She questioned hysterically, having already pieced everything together.

Samael silent for a moment turned his head towards her, for the first time since they entered the vehicle and nodded. "He needs to sacrifice you in a ritual to break the curse. Has been trying to do so for as long as he became a vampire.

His problem though has always been that there is no found pattern to the Doppelganger's births. The only thing known for certain is that the previous one must be dead, which Klaus has been attempting for years since the last one turned herself into a vampire right before he could do the ritual and escaped."

"And let me guess, this previous doppelganger is that Katherine, bitch, who possessed me," Elena spat, her voice dripping with as much hatred as she could muster when saying the former doppelganger's name.

"How did you know?" Samael questioned in confusion and mild shock.

"I'm not stupid, Sam. I can piece it together. She possessed me -- talking about doppelgangers, a sacrifice, claiming we had some kind of deep connection. She was terrified of Klaus, saw you as her savior, me a key to her, freedom, and wanted to take my place in your life. It all makes sense now." Elena explained, her tone bitter and accusing.

"I never said you were Elena, you just surprised me," Samael told her gently.

Elena hearing his slightly hurt tone felt bad for causing it, wanting to kick herself for lashing out against him. "I'm sorry, I know you didn't mean that. It's just-" She began as she couldn't bottle up her emotions anymore and finally began to cry.

Samael immediately turned as much as possible towards her and pulled her into his chest as the tears started to fall down. "It's just so much, Sam! So much! And I don't know what to do! I feel scared and alone-"

"You're not alone. Don't you ever think that, you hear me?" Samael interrupts, firmly as his hold around her tightens.

"How can you be so sure? Why are you even still with me, Sam? I seem to bring you nothing but problems!" Elena suddenly yells out as she forces herself to push him, and pull away, no matter how much she wants to once more throw herself in his arms, and feel his protective hold around her.

"From what you're saying, you don't need to be a part of this! That monster would simply leave you alone, so long as you just, leave me to my fate! You're choosing to suffer, to risk your own life, all because of me! It's all my fault!" She continues as she begins to try and wipe away the tears from her eyes with her clothes.

"You should just let me go. Find yourself another girl, one who doesn't put you in mortal danger simply by being with you," Elena states, her voice now quieter, as she turns and opens the door and starts to hastily walk out, uncaring towards the rain starting to pour down on her.

Samael getting out of his shock immediately gets out of the car, calling out to her, but to no avail as she begins to run away. With no choice, he with great speed runs past her, cutting her off, "Elena, what the hell are you talking about?"

"Have I not been clear enough? I'm breaking up with you, Sam! Now get out of the way," Elena states through her sobs, though the words feel like acid on her tongue.

Samael cuts her off again as she tries to walk past him, "You don't mean that. You can't mean that." He counters, his voice strained with emotion but firm.

"Yes, I mean it!" Elena shouted, though her voice cracked under the weight of her tears. "You'd be better off without me! I'm nothing but a burden -- a danger to you!"

Samael's face twisted, a flicker of pain flashing in his eyes before he took a step closer, his voice lowering but losing none of its intensity. "Do you think so little of me? Of us? You think I'd ever leave you, just because things are hard? Because you're in danger?"

"It's not just danger, Sam! It's a death sentence!" she cried, throwing her arms out. "You're choosing to tie yourself to someone who's being hunted by a monster! Someone who might not even survive long enough to-"

"To what? Be happy? Be loved? Be alive?" Samael interrupted, his tone trembling with a mix of frustration and vulnerability. "Elena, I choose you. Over and over, no matter the risks, no matter the cost. You are worth every second of pain, of fear, of uncertainty I've felt and will feel. You are my woman, the one I love. You are everything to me." He finished, possessiveness and love clear in his tone.

She froze, her sobs catching in her throat as his words sank in, full of raw sincerity, and for a moment catching her off guard, pushing away her doubts and fears.

"I know you're scared," he continues, stepping closer to her. "So am I. Every day. But I don't care how many evils I have to face, be they vampires, demons or even so-called gods. None of it matters if I lose you."

Elena's knees nearly buckled as she let out a choked sob. "Why, Sam? Why do you love me so much? I don't deserve it."

Samael cupped her face gently, his fingers brushing away the rain and tears alike. His voice softened, breaking as he spoke. "Because you're you. Because you're brave even when you think you're not. Because you care so much, are so pure, it hurts to even think about being in a world without you in it. You make me believe there's something worth saving in this world. Something to fight for. You're not a burden, Elena -- you're my reason."

Her breath hitched as she stared into his eyes, the sheer force of his love overwhelming her. "Sam..." she whispered, her voice trembling with something between relief and anguish.

He leaned closer, pressing his forehead against hers, his tone dropping to a near whisper. "So, no. I'm not going to let you go. Not now, not ever. You can push me away, yell at me, try to runaway to the very ends of Creation, but I will always find you, always save you. Because I love you. And I won't stop fighting for you, no matter what."

Elena collapsed into his arms, her tears flowing freely as the last of her resistance crumbled. Samael held her tightly, his embrace unwavering against the rain and the storm inside her.

For the first time since the world had turned upside down, she let herself believe that she wasn't alone -- that maybe, just maybe, they could face this, together.

So, Samael finally told Elena about her being a doppelganger and what that means for them all. How did you find her reaction? Did you like it? Found it in charachter?

Please do comment and review how you found it. We only have four reviews right now, which I'm very thankful for, but I would honestly like more.

Like, your comments and reviews is basically what makes me want to continue. The less I have, the less motivated I become, because Interaction with you all is one of the main reasons I write.

So yeah, if you still want me to continue this story do please tell me and I'll hopefully see you all later,
