Chapter 44: Chapter 44 Persuasion

  The lunch was very rich.

There is everything from roast duck, chicken, steak, various fruits, red wine and pies.

It was obvious that the Hershel family attached great importance to Leon's arrival. Leon also abided by his duties as a guest and was very polite. Occasionally, he would make a few well-placed jokes. After the meal, it can be said that both the host and the guests enjoyed themselves.

In the afternoon, Leon and Amy asked to experience the feeling of riding a horse, so Hershel asked his eldest daughter Maggie to teach them how to ride a horse.

Maggie taught very seriously, from how to sit, how to exert force, to how to keep the body balance during exercise. She is a relatively outgoing girl and occasionally talks about stories about herself and the farm.

They rode for about two hours and it was quite enjoyable. Leon had basically mastered the key points of horse riding, but Amy was just getting started.

He made an excuse, left the two girls to continue practicing horse riding, and went to find Hershel in the house.

The old man was a little surprised why Leon was looking for him, and Leon said straight to the point:

"Mr. Hershel, I know that your warehouse is filled with many zombies. You believe that they are just patients, not monsters."

"Because it's full of your neighbors, relatives and friends."

"I won't comment on your idea for now, but I invite you to leave this farm with me and take a look at the outside world."

"Take a look at the world as it really is right now."

"It won't take too long, just an hour or two, and if you stay with me, there won't be any danger."

Hershel frowned and looked at Leon angrily. Thinking of the identity of the man in front of him and the power he possessed, the old man sighed softly and said:

"Okay, Mr. Custer, I'll go out with you, but I hope you won't interfere with my family's behavior in the future."

Ten minutes later, without alerting anyone else, the two of them drove their modified jeep with Hershel to a nearby town.

Halfway through the journey, Lyon saw a good target and stopped the car.

It was a zombie with only half of its body left. It might have been run over by a car. Its body below the abdomen was missing, and its rotten skin and black internal organs were visible to the naked eye. When it saw the stopped car, it suddenly gained motivation and used both hands to desperately crawl towards the car.

Leon got out of the car, stepped on the zombie's head, pinned him to the ground, turned to Hershel, whose face was livid, and asked:

"These things will begin to rot after the first day of transformation. Although I don't know why maggots don't appear, they can still move around in this body."

"Mr. Hershel, you may not know that I have searched the entire Atlanta area for several months and have only found a few hundred survivors. Only one in a few thousand of us humans survived."

"If, in the future, we develop a virus serum, can these rotten and broken corpses be turned back into humans?"

Hershel stared at the half-crawling zombie. All the zombies he had seen before were almost complete, which gave him a feeling that a cure was possible. Coupled with the fantasy of reuniting with his family, he stubbornly insisted on his opinion.

His daughter and friends have also been living in the illusion he has woven, and no one is willing to burst it.

But this half of the zombie that could still move gave him a huge shock, making him want to escape.

Leon waited for dozens of seconds, and when the old man still didn't answer, he shrugged and crushed the zombie's head under his feet.

The two were on the road again, and Hershel suddenly said he wanted to drink, so Leon followed his guidance and came to a bar in the town.

Along the way, the two saw more strange-looking zombies. Some had their skin burnt into charcoal, some had their limbs missing after being bitten, some had several large holes in their chests, and one had only a layer of skin left covering its skeleton, yet it could still move. It was simply unscientific, and it made Leon very curious.

Entering the bar, Hershel seemed to be in a very low mood. He took a bottle of brandy from the counter and started drinking it by himself. Leon picked a bottle of fruit wine with a very low alcohol content, held a glass, and started walking around here.

By the time he had completed a circle and cleared all dangers, the old man had already drunk half a bottle.

Leon stepped forward, patted Hershel on the shoulder, and said, "Drink less, Mr. Hershel, your family will blame me when you go home later."

The old man raised his cloudy eyes, looked at Leon, and said:

"I accompanied you on this trip today and saw those mutilated monsters."

"I just realized that I was a fool, Mr. Custer. My wife, stepson, and best friend had all died long ago. I had been raising a bunch of monsters."

"What hope is there for this world? This town used to have thousands of residents, but now there's not even a single living person to be seen."

"Everything we were familiar with has become a bubble."

Leon didn't feel anything. He said to Hershel with a serious expression:

"Whether you feel hopeful or not, Mr. Hershel, you are the backbone of your family, your two daughters rely on you, and your friends trust you. Even if there is no hope, you must pretend to be confident and pass on your confidence to them."

"This is the responsibility you must shoulder as a father and as a friend."

He patted the old man on the shoulder and continued:

"There is still hope for this world. Our Umbrella Corporation is the hope of this world. As long as we are given enough time, we will definitely be able to defeat the virus and liberate all mankind."

"This is my belief and my ideal."

Hershel murmured a few words softly and said:

"You are a truly noble man, Mr. Custer."

Before dusk, the two drove back to the farm. Maggie and Amy were riding horses and admiring the surrounding scenery. They felt a little strange when they saw their father coming back drunk.

Leon didn't give much explanation, but instead invited Maggie's family to enjoy the delicious food he brought from the base in the evening.

This time when he came from the base, he also brought a lot of supplies for Glenn's team. He took this opportunity to hold a small open-air barbecue party.

Before the sun set, Glenn led his team back to the farm. They had only been here for a few days and they did not gain much, mostly some food and medicine. However, there were three survivors who passed by who wanted to join Umbrella Corporation, so he kept them.

Leon took the time to meet with the three of them, a couple and his neighbor, who looked like honest and decent people. He promised to take the three of them to the Umbrella base when he left, and invited the three of them to a banquet together, which earned the gratitude of several people.

The dinner went smoothly under Amy's arrangement. Good wine and meat were served, and everyone enjoyed the meal very much, along with various cooked food and snacks brought from the base.

Leon didn't spoil the fun by giving any speech, but just watched everyone's reactions quietly under Amy's waiting.

After the dinner, Glenn came over and told Leon a piece of news.

Outside a town not far away, he found a camp with about 30 people. Due to insufficient intelligence and inability to judge the other party's character, he did not act rashly.
