Chapter 7: Failed
Eugene divided his time.
In the morning, he'll study magic and in the afternoon, he'll practice his swordsmanship. Though there is only a little progress with magic, he's confident enough when it comes to swordsmanship as he finally grasps his former stance...especially the flow of his mana through his sword.
During this time, Vincent finally realizes that there's really something wrong.
His young master, despite ending his prohibition keeps himself locked inside the room. He's not even allowed to come inside without permission so there's nothing to report to the marquis.
Now, the marquis raises a suspicion that his son is probably planning something.
And the marchioness who had enough of her son's lawless attitude decided to visit her son to give him a lesson. Who told him to hurt his own blood-related brother and go far as almost killing him through illness? The marchioness who loved her third son dearly is angry, at the same time feels exhausted when it comes to dealing with her second son.
And because of that, she would anxiously hurt Eugene physically.
"Just why?! Why are you not listening to your mother?!"
So this time, Eugene who had no idea and is only practicing magic was surprised when his mother suddenly barge in with Vincent who looked worried.
"You--"
"M-Mother?"
Eugene nervously stood and tried to hide the books on his table.
The marchioness who is ready to shout turns silent when she saw her son reading books.
"What are you doing?" turning a blind eye, the marchioness softened expression disappear and became stern. She still hasn't forgotten her second son's mistake and as a mother, she wouldn't tolerate such a thing so there is still a need for a scolding.
"No. Nothing."
Eugene lowered his eyes, not wanting to look at his mother.
"I was too busy taking care of your brother so I couldn't manage to visit you but now that Eullian is stabilized I'm here to talk to you about that incident."
"Yes, I'm sorry."
Seeing her son's careless look, the marchioness turn red and couldn't help but get angry.
She rushes towards Eugene and slaps him.
"Just that?! Are you really sorry?! What's with that look?! Are you thinking of me as annoying?!"
"Madam!"
Vincent immediately held the marchioness's hand, preventing her from slapping Eugene repeatedly. This is why he couldn't leave when the marchioness visit his young master. She might be looking calm and good but just like a woman with mental illness, her changes of mood are quick and her action would sometimes be quite severe.
Nothing is good.
So Eugene, who is used to the beating of his mother just keeps his mouth shut and refuses to meet her mother's eyes because he's sure that he would just be hurt again.
Because unlike his little brother Eullian.
His mother...would never look at him with love.
"Look at this child!"
Pointing at her son, the marchioness continues, "He always refuses to listen and probably didn't even see me as his mother!"
Eugene who is listening bit his lips.
"Look at him not looking at me when I'm talking!"
"Such an unmannered child is not my own!"
Vincent who heard those words couldn't help but raise his voice: "Madam!"
How could a mother say that in front of their child? No parents would say such a harsh words toward their children. Even if a child made a mistake, in the end, it's still a child, there's room for education and there's still time for their brain to develop and gained enough common sense.
Saying such a thing is just wrong.
How could you say to your own son that he's not of your blood out of anger?
No wonder his young master always acted like that. It's also because of the marchioness attitude that made his young master overthink.
"What?! I'm right! He's not my child! He's a fake!"
Vincent's eyes deepen.
"Madam I think you're tired and need a rest."
The marchioness paused and look at Vincent who suddenly turn gloomy.
She couldn't help but let out a fake cough and composed herself back, finally realizing the ugliness of her word.
"T-This..."
The marchioness looks at her son and suddenly feels guilty.
"E-Eugene, m-mom is sorry. I'm just angry. I didn't mean it." letting out tears, she softly approaches Eugene to hold him but Eugene flinch and took a little step back, which made the marchioness surprised.
"Y-You--"
"I'm sorry, I just thought...." you would hit me.
Swallowing, Marchioness Celisha retracted her trembling hand and hugged herself.
"Right...I see... I'm sorry."
Vincent who sense the awkwardness between mother and son spoke this time.
"Madam, the third master would probably wonder where you are. I think it's time for you to go. As for educating the second young master...as his attendant and private tutor, I think I would also have the right and responsibility."
Eugene peeked at Vincent with a hint of surprise.
Vincent's words are indirect but they indicate meaning that tells his mother to keep her hands away as Vincent who had the role of attendant and private tutor is responsible for anything that he did. It means that Vincent is weighing some of his bad deeds by using his position so that his mother and father could admonish not just him.
"It's my rudeness. Then I'll take my leave and visit next time."
Eugene held his breath and watch his mother hurriedly walk out.
He and Vincent stood beside each other in silence.
If it weren't for Vincent's presence then his mother won't stop hitting him but why would Vincent who used to have a prejudice against him suddenly change and started to stand in front of him to protect him? As if he really understands his pain.
Funny.
How could he have such wishful thoughts?
As if, there is really someone in this world that can understand him.
If only...There is one...
Even only one...
Then...
He'll treasure that person.
——When the marchioness leaves Eugene's room, she just stood behind the closed doors and stares at her trembling hands in confusion.
How could she not control her emotion?
Once again...she hit her own child.
And out of anger, she even refuses her own child's existence. Just why on earth whenever she's dealing with her second son that she will lose her reason? Even her patience will shorten, ending up with her, hurting her son physically whenever she couldn't let out words.
"Madam."
Raising her head, she look at Simon who suddenly appeared out of nowhere.
"You're here, where is the marquis?"
"His lord is in his office." smiling, Simon's eyes glisten.
"Is Madam here to see the second master?"
"Ah? Y-Yes."
Simon sighed, "It's really tough, third young master really needed to be controlled so that he won't grow up as he is now. I know what Madam did and I don't think it's bad. Sometimes if a child couldn't learn from words, make him learn through pain. In that way, he would realize the consequences of his action."
Marchioness Celisha frown.
Sighing, she calms herself down: "Yeah, you seem right."
"I'm not a bad mother, I just don't want him to make a mistake that could hurt or affects someone around him." closing and opening her eyes, she gave Simon a weak smile.
"Thank you, Simon, I'll go and talk with Aison."
Simon chuckled, "Madam is always welcome."
Marchioness Celisha fix her hair and nodded at Simon.
"Vincent is inside if you are looking for him and please send my apology."
Simon watches the Marchioness walk away before letting out a small laugh. Thinking how funny is it for the Marchioness to believe his words when it's evident that hitting your own child is considered abuse. But well, who made Eugene annoy him? Always taking Vincent's attention and excluding him. It's just his little revenge and if that brat won't learn his lesson then he doesn't mind oppressing him.
So easy.
Humming, he walks away elegantly.
On the other side, Vincent and Eugene, who had no idea about Simon's malice face each other awkwardly.
Eugene wanted to thank Vincent but couldn't utter a word.
While Vincent wanted to comfort his young master but thinking of his young master's avoidance of him, he couldn't get near and speak, afraid of hitting his young master's bottom line.
In the end, under the long silence, Vincent is the first one to give up.
"Then young master please take your time."
Eugene open and close his mouth but still couldn't let out a sound. He could only watch Vincent take a step and exit his room without looking back.
——It takes time for a wound to heal with the scar that keeps an imprint.
Eugene couldn't help his tears and thought that no matter how many times he reassured himself not to care, he would always feel the same pain and go through the same experience again and again.
That no matter how he swears not to care...
He couldn't help but be hurt, especially by how his mother treated him.
Just like that, she could raise his hand against him, and just like that her apologies and guilt are so easy to express as if she's thinking that he would forgive her...after all, she's his mother. A mother who gives him life and gives birth to him in the world not knowing that he will just suffer.
Really, life is unfair to those unlucky.
Wiping his tears...Eugene patted his cheeks.
It's okay. At least, unlike in the past, there's no hope this time, and there are no more lingering feelings. He could easily let go of his grievances as he suffered much more than just a simple beating when he was punished by heaven.
Even not allowing his soul to disappear.
Let it wander in a different dimension and possess people's bodies.
It would be great if he is living normally in those worlds...but no...he just suffers...drowning in thoughts and stabbed by pain countless times.
He knows no one and the world is new to him.
Especially at that time when he woke up in the future and just like a child, he is clueless and curious about everything which is why he was easily deceived and died because of his stupidity.
In those reincarnations, his childhood friend on earth is the only person who made his life easy to live in. For the first time, he experiences familial love, a brotherhood relationship, and the proper way to socialize without being taken advantage of.
Sadly, the rapture experience ended soon.
Once again, he falls from the clouds.
His childhood friend didn't even show emotions of regret, rather he saw happiness. Happiness that couldn't be explained.
Why?
You look so happy, so why cry?
Don't let your tears stain me, I'm tainted enough to be dyed red.
At least, show hatred so that he won't think and hope for nothing.
In that way, he won't feel sorry for himself...
A person who died and live again several times.
Clenching his fist, Eugene took a deep breath.
He's sure that his father would hear about what happened but luckily, his father doesn't care about him and would only talk with his mother about the incident.
After that, what happened would be forgotten.
As his feelings are invalid.
If only Eullian stopped clinging to him and calling him brother then maybe he could let go. Unfortunately, he's ten years old and around this time, his little brother is still innocent and delicate.
Eullian would still stick to himself and his parents and the people around him would still notice him.
It's such a pain in the ass.
He wanted to express his hatred to keep Eullian away but if he do that, he would anger his parents. Either way, the only thing he can do now is to focus on himself and the development of the empire.
Standing, Eugene walks towards the balcony and looks at the clear sky.
"If I go out, I wouldn't be caught right?"
He's been practicing magic by himself but he's not confident enough. However, there is this magic that he wanted to try and that is teleportation.
Teleportation is the handiest skill in battle.
Combining it with healing magic, he is confident enough to survive his years as long as he focuses on these two and his swordsmanship.
"Should I try it?"
Fidgeting, he looks left and right.
"Whatever, I hope nothing goes wrong!"
Breathing...Eugene started mind incantation as a blue magic circle appeared below him and enveloped his body.
Not good!
Things happen too fast and Eugene lost control.
What happens? When he was practicing, it was all good. He can go to the library and even enter the off-limits rooms. Now, how come the flow of mana in his body seems to burst and be out of control?
Where is he?
Looking around, I it's a luxurious room with elegant carvings.
Everything is gold and colored cream which seems like a royal palace design.
A room so big is...
"Who are you?"
...a chamber?
Huh? Slowly turning around, Eugene froze when he faced such a familiar face that he wouldn't and couldn't forget his whole life.
"What is a stranger like you doing here? and how did you enter our dukedom?"
No way!
