Chapter 27: A Big Brother
"How have you been Luther?" Darwin asked as he rested back in the chair and took a gulp of the wine.
Luther also took a sip of his wine before answering "I've been fine uncle, in fact, I've been feeling great"
Darwin had a surprised look on his face and he sat up in his seat. Pointing at Luther he said: "You? Feeling great? Have the gods descended?"
Luther chuckled "I've told you several times uncle, there are no gods anywhere"
"Yeah, yeah" Darwin said in a sing song manner. He was very much concerned as to what was making his nephew feel great "Or perhaps, did you finally get a woman by your side? I know you've been trending these days"
"No, the women of Evershire are too...bland"
"Don't say that, you can never tell with love. Well, if it wasn't love then tell me, what exactly is causing my dear nephew who is always so stern to feel so great that I can even see a grin"
"I suppose you would know" Luther took another sip from his glass and went to put it back on the stool. "You won't believe me if I told you" There was a subtle smile on his face.
"What's wrong with you today Luther?"
"I saw him"
Darwin had a puzzled face. His nephew was not the kind of person who gave meaningless remarks so there was more to those three words "Do you care to elaborate?"
"Exactly one year and seven weeks ago, we received word at the royal castle that Drakmoor was under siege by a warlord who called himself The Great Khan"
Darwin had to interrupt him there "The Great Khan? That's one of the most powerful warlords that has ever walked the earth. What was he doing in Drakmoor?"
"You speak of this man like he is supposed to be some hot topic"
"Because he is"
"Well, I never heard of him before then. As I was saying, three days after, the king asked me to intervene because he could not afford to let Drakmoor fall. I took up the job but when I got there, there was a third army partaking in the fight. Another warlord, Karn"
"I assume you did not just come here to tell that you saw warlords" Darwin said as he was getting really impatient.
"Be calm uncle. As I was saying, I needed a way to get to the main commanders of the army and fighting through would waste my time to I had my assistant fly me to the center of the battlefield and I descended on top of them. That was when I saw him"
Darwin inhaled sharply and exhaled slowly. Something was clearly wrong with his nephew as he had never seen him behave this way. It was like he was so happy that he wanted to explode from it. He placed a hand on his forehead and closed his eyes, after a while he took the hand down and opened his eyes. "Luther what-, no who? who did you see?"
"Who else? My little brother of course"
"Wait, I didn't catch you on that one. Come again"
"I said I saw my little brother, Artur"
Darwin's brain exploded. The sudden news was almost impossible to comprehend. Artur, Artur Loxley, his nephew and the child whom his sister cherished the most of her offspring was alive and well. But he could not believe the news just yet.
"How did you know it was him? You've never even met him since he was cured and he probably does not even know you"
"You're right, he doesn't. He was so surprised when he saw the emblem on my cape" Luther said "That kid was something else. A twelve-year-old fighting his way through an army of grown men, Mages and Rune-users all in an attempt to escape using the chaos"
"W-w-where is he right now?" Darwin asked.
The smile vanished off Luther's face and he took another sip of his wine before answering:
"I don't know"
"Huh? What do you mean you don't know?"
"I watched him escape, but I did not go after him"
Darwin held his breath and processed what Luther had just said. As mentioned earlier, Luther did not make meaningless or unnecessary remarks, he also did not lie so he meant when he said he let Artur go "What?!" Victor screamed "Why? If you really saw him then why didn't you go after him? You know how much everyone has been searching for Artur so why?"
" The journey from Drakmoor to Evershire will take at least a month and half. It has already been over a year and he's not back. Don't you think if he wanted to be found he would be here by now?"
"But why would you leave him?"
"I was being a good big brother"
Darwin was dumbfounded "A good big brother? What is good about what you did?"
"Leave the kid, let him experience the world and enjoy himself. He's going to need it"
"What are you talking about? How do we even know if he's still alive?"
"Oh, I assure you, he's alive and well"
"How do you know that?"
"The Ardenholt house has its secrets, so does the Loxley house. Trust me"
Not knowing what else to say, Victor kept his mouth shut. If it was Luther asking for his trust, then he was sure that the young man had a sure way of knowing that Artur was alive. Still, Luther looked too nonchalant about it. Artur was still a kid at this point, how could he survive on his own. It was his first time seeing Luther being nonchalant. Darwin was restless.
"If you were going to give me such bad news then you shouldn't have told me anything from the start. Besides, this is a new side to you. Did seeing your brother make you that happy? I wonder what the rest of your squad must think"
"Don't worry uncle, he will come here on his own two feet"
