Chapter 7: Taste the Catastrophe [1]
Artur lay in his mother's garden with Angela sitting by under the evening sky. They were both quiet and just let the cool breeze blow quietly at them. Their relationship had built up over the years and they made it to the title of best friends, so Angela was like family in their home. His parents treated her like their daughter, but she never seemed to come out of the shell of 'I'm a commoner and you are nobility'. She was only truly free when she was alone with Artur or Lily.
"Say Artur, your sister told me that you have amnesia" Angela said from out of the blue.
Artur was surprised and confused as to why she would bring up that of all topics.
"What's this about now?"
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Come on, don't tell me you're mad about that"
"I am mad. I thought we were best friends. Best friends tell each other everything" Angela snapped and hit him on the leg. He groaned.
"Ow"
"You deserve that. Now, why didn't you tell me?"
"I never felt it was worth telling"
She attacked again but he stopped this time and pleaded for mercy.
"I'm sorry, ok? I had the black death disease and I was mysteriously cured and lost my memories. I told you now"
"What?" Angela's face suddenly became gloomy and her eyes welled up.
"See? This is exactly why I didn't want to tell you, you're such a softie"
Angela wiped her tears and turned away from him, pouting. He hated lying to her but he actually was not lying when he said he could not remember anything. He knew that he was not of this world and was from a modern era, but he could not remember his family. That was why he was confused when he met Lily. He had forgotten their faces, their names and the things they did together. The only thing he could remember was that they were family.
Artur lay down in the grass again and waited for her to speak. She was always the first to speak in this kind of situation. It did not take long.
"So... are you listening to me?"
"Yeah sure. I'm listening"
"What was it like?"
"What was what like?"
"What was it like, waking up without any memories of your past?"
"Well, I could say it was... saddening"
"And you could love your family even if you did not remember anything about them?"
"Yeah, I mean, they're family after all, and it's impossible not to love the Loxley family"
"You're right about that. How much do you love them?"
"Want to give me a range?"
"Can you die for them?"
"Without a second thought" Artur immediately replied.
"Can you live for them?"
"Is that even a question?"
"Answer"
"Yes, without a doubt"
"What would you do if you lost them?"
"If I lost them?"
"Yes. If someone were to take them away from you forever, what would you do?"
"Forever?"
"Yes, forever"
"If that were to happen..."
=================
Artur ran into the house and he saw his mother and father wearing their robes, but he could not see Lily anywhere.
"Is the king really coming?"
"Yes Artur, now go put on your robe. Lily is waiting for you upstairs" Vivian informed him.
"Ok mom. I will be back quickly" Artur said and ran up the steps.
Artur who had only ever heard about the king but had never seen him was a bit excited. Seeing a king in this world was a great honor and now the king was going out of his way to visit the Loxley family, how heartwarming.
Artur met Lily in his room, holding a robe which was folded neatly. It was the same color as the rest of the family and Artur guessed that it would be the same design. It was.
As Lily unfolded the cloth he saw the Santa Claus like design of red clothing and white furry material at the helm of the cape. On the back was a design of two gold bells crossing each other at the top and below them there was a stallion that stood on its two hind legs supported by something that looked like it was meant to be a cloud.
Their family emblem.
Besides the stallion, the bells and the cloud, every other part of the emblem was black. It was the first time he had seen this robe since coming to this world.
"This looks really nice" Artur said.
"No time to compliment Artur, the king is almost here so put this on"
"But how do you all even know that the king is coming? I did not see or hear anything"
"A royal herald arrived a few minutes ago, bearing the king's flag and their family emblem. Do you know when that happens?"
"When the king is coming"
"Of course, when the king is coming now get this rob e on and move downstairs"
Artur took the robe from her and put it on. He checked himself out in his mirror and saw that it was very nice.
"Artur, we do not have time for this"
"Sorry, let's go" Artur took her hand and dragged her along as he exited the room. They both went outside and met their parents standing in front of the door. To the left were maids and further down to the gate of the mansion were knights on each side. It was a nice sight.
Vivian signaled to the both of them with her hands and they went to stand beside their parents, son to mother, daughter to father.
They were there quite a while but the king did not show up and Artur got the feeling that either this was a joke or the king was someone who loved exercising power at any time of his choosing because what was the point of making them wait out there for so long?
"Mom, dad, are your sure he's coming because I don't see nothing and besides, doesn't the king's herald come like two to four days before the king?"
"The herald told us that the king would be here shortly so why don't you try to behave?"
"I'll be right back"
" Artur?!"
Artur left his mother and quickly ran toward one of the towers on the gate of his father's mansion. He climbed up the stairs and at the top was something that was by the arrow slit covered in a cloth. He pulled it off and revealed a telescope.
'Guess I'll manage this'
Artur shut one eye and used the other to look into the telescope. He looked from left to right, up down, everywhere but there was no sign of the king and his army. It seemed wrong to Artur but still, he had to tell his parents. He put his head outside a window behind the tower and called for his parents' attention.
"Mom, dad, I told you. The king isn't coming. There is nothing out there" Artur shouted.
"Artur come down from there right now" Vivian ordered. She was clearly vexed.
"But mom, I'm telling you. The king is nowhere near-"
*BOOM*
First an explosion shattered the base of the tower Artur was in and he who was at the edge of the window, fell out as the tower came down. Everyone who was present panicked when there was a second explosion and there was a stampede. The maids ran around and the guards tried to assemble themselves to battle against whatever was causing the explosions.
Their evening-dark sky was suddenly filled with an orange-ish crimson color and when they all looked up they saw balls of flames coming down from the sky heading straight for the town and the fields.
It was an attack.
