Chapter 9: Rune
Victor and Duncan sped at each other and their weapons clashed with a *Clang* sound. Applying enough force to both weapons, they pushed each other backwards and went again. Victor made several lightning fast thrusts at Duncan but he dodged them all and retaliated with a swing of his axe.
Victor jumped to the right and the axe shattered the spot where he formerly stood. Pushing the blade of his sword into the ground and using it as a supporting pillar, Victor jumped up and delivered a well prepared kick to Duncan's cheek. The kick was only able to move Duncan's head and did not deal any real damage. Duncan turned his face back to Victor who was still in mid air and punched him very hard in the solar plexus.
Victor felt the resounding impact move across his whole body as he was thrown backwards through the open space and crashed into a wall.
Duncan ran at him and at swung the axe with a lot of power but Victor got up and dodged behind Duncan. Duncan turned around and Victor's fist collided with his chin, sending his gaze upward. He immediately swung his hand in hopes of hitting Victor but Victor dodged below him and fired another punch into his left ribcage.
Duncan felt it this time and took a leap backward but when he landed he noticed that Victor's sword was not in his hand anymore. He looked up and saw the sword coming down at his head. He dodged with swift movement but Victor had already gotten close and grabbed him by his beard.
He pulled hard against it and used Duncan's head to dig open a circle the ground before flinging him toward his men. Duncan landed on his feet and he narrowly dodged Victor's blade which was aimed at his neck.
Victor rushed at him with his aim still on his neck but Duncan made a full bend backward and used the handle of his axe to stop it from coming down at his head at all. Victor pushed and Duncan fell to the ground.
Victor raised the sword up and tried to cut him but he dodged and got on his feet only to see that Victor was behind him. Victor thrust the blade at him but he bent down, dodging the blade and getting hold of Victor's hand. He flung Victor to the ground but Victor swung his blade at him again, forcing him to back away.
"Woah, this is getting interesting"
Victor rose to his feet and the two combatants lunged at each other again.
Duncan swung his axe twice but Victor leaned his head back a bit, completely dodging it and thrust his blade at his adversary's head. Duncan bent his head to the left to dodge but the sword grazed his cheek and let out a little blood. Duncan gave him a smile but frustration was all over his face.
'This asshole...'
Victor sped to his back again and sunk the butt of his sword into his back, throwing him forward. Duncan rolled on the ground and used his hand to stop himself from moving any further.
'...is slowly overpowering me'
Victor thrust the blade at him again but he dodged it and Victor was opportune to get closer to him. Taking three sides jumps, he closed the distance between them and swung his sword but Duncan reacted quickly and blocked again then they both made some distance.
Duncan raised his axe and rested it on his shoulder with a smile, revealing a fine full pair of white teeth.
"It seems like I've underestimated you" Duncan said. "I'm going to be a little more serious now so you better prepare yourself"
Duncan rushed at Victor with speed that was significantly greater than before and Victor moved out of the line of his attack.
Duncan, with his long battle axe, gave Victor no chance to get into range for attack. He handled the axe like he was holding a sword and swung with precise movements. Victor who was still outside his range for attack suddenly shot the sword of his hand with almost no movement at all. Duncan was dumbstruck and was barely able to dodge when it came at his face but he managed.
Víctor caught the sword and tried to cut him again but Duncan blocked and grinned. They pushed against each other very hard but no side was willing to give in.
'It should be my win. It's so obvious that I am very much stronger than this old bag of bones so why?'
Victor gave Duncan such a cold stare that could send shivers down anyone's spine and he started feeling nervous.
'Why the hell am I the one losing?' "Don't you play with me old man!"
Duncan pushed with a lot of power that Victor was thrown off balance and was forced to retreat.
"Dad!"
Duncan gave Victor no time at all to recover. His body moved like lightning and every strike carried power but Victor was still able to dodge them. It was like he knew everything that Duncan was going to do, every move he was going to make. It only served to piss Duncan off the more.
Artur, on the other hand, was grinning. His father was clearly beating Duncan.
Duncan's axe came like a lightning bolt, the spike on top aimed at Victor's heart but Victor jumped over him. He reacted quickly and before Victor could land he had already predicted his position and aimed at it. There was no way Victor was going to be able to block at such close proximity What he did not know was that his prediction was a part of Victor's prediction.
When Victor landed he wasted no time in falling on his back and when the axe passed over him he kicked it, sending Duncan's hand up.
"Damn, you really live up to your name Viper of Hawkhurst"
Duncan brought the axe back down, with more power but Victor took a backflip and escaped from the spot before his head was split apart. He landed on his feet and before Duncan could raise the axe again he sped at him and caught the hand holding it, making sure he could not raise it again.
His sword shone bright under the moonlight and he had that death stare again. The eyes of someone who would burn the whole world down if it meant that they would get what they wanted.
Duncan froze as he looked into those cold eyes but he forced himself to regain his senses and his eyes were full of life again.
There was a sudden burst of energy from the ground and Victor was thrown away. The energy exploded and within they could all see the silhouette of something like a person, but it was not a person.
Artur was dumbfounded. 'No way. Was that magic just now? Magic exists in this world?'
Victor's face became more serious as he knew what he was about to go up against. The silhouette came closer until it was out of the fire and it was Duncan, but he hand undergone changes, a lot of changes. His body was now red and his hair was standing up straight. Only the upper part of his face was still normal.
"You old fart. I'm going to tear off your limbs and feed them to my wolves. Then I will keep your head as a trophy. The man who slayed the Viper of Hawkhurst, how wonderful would that sound? Hahaha"
Victor finally spoke for the first time since the fight began. "So, you have a Rune"
Artur who was still confused about what was going on alternated his gaze between Duncan and his father several times 'What? What's a Rune?'
He heard murmurs from Duncan's men.
"Oh no, Duncan's snapped"
"This is isn't going to end well for that old man"
"You bet"
"Everyone stay back"
"What does it look like?" With breath, flames escaped Duncan's mouth and nostrils. "I heard that you've killed many Rune-users even though you only use sword techniques, you are powerful indeed, but I assure you, I'm different from the rest"
"In that case, I guess I don't have to hold back any longer"
Victor walked to Duncan and Duncan, to him. They approached each other slowly and Victor held his sword in the high guard position.
'Dad is doing the guard of honor, what is he planning on doing against that monster?'
Water burst out of nothing and engulfed the blade of the sword and the both of them charged at each other.
"Loxley Water Technique: Fifth form, Flow"
