Chapter 9: Ruin and Overconfidence
It was starting to get dark.
Rain was pouring outside as thick grey clouds filled the sky. The front of Nora’s yard was starting to flood with water as the drains struggled to rid it all.
“Lake, that’s your name right?”
“Yeah.”
“What are you to Sis?”
“Well, she picked me from the camp. I’m not really anything to her, I guess.”
“Ah…”
There was an awkward silence as the two of them looked at each other. Nora still had a pensive sense of discomfort around Lake, but was begrudgingly accepting the situation. Leaning back a little, she stretched her arms out.
“I’m going to be making sure you don’t do anything weird.”
“Like what.”
“I don’t know. You… boys are like animals. You might break the furniture, or make a mess everywhere. Why did Nia leave me with you alone…?”
Lake slowly got up from his chair.
“I’m not sure. What do you want me to do.”
“I don’t know! What are you going to do?”
Lake began slowly making his way toward the living room. It was heavily furnished and had a large variety of antique seating. He looked over to Nora for assurance, but she didn’t say anything.
“Are you fine with me sitting in the living room?”
“Um…”
He sighed and leaned against the wall. There was clearly tension still between the two of them as Nora awkwardly looked around.
“I guess. I’m coming with you though.”
“Alright.”
The two of them silently went to the neighbouring room. The awkwardness continued, filling the air with an unstable atmosphere. Eventually, Lake took a seat and somewhat accepted his situation. There wasn’t much he could do to gain trust.
The societal hierarchy and expectations were planted in stone.
*
As the night came closer, it was clear that the rain wasn’t ending. In fact, the storm strengthened and water splattered all over the windows. However, the strong infrastructure of the house easily kept it out.
Nora did not say anything to Lake. Instead, she was happily reading a novel that was in her hand. The only sound in the room aside from the harsh weather outside was the sound of pages flipping.
As he stared off into the distance, there was movement by the back window.
Clack.
Crunch.
Shatter. Crash.
Suddenly, the back window shattered into thousands of tiny shards. The entire grounds was littered with glass and rain quickly began pouring in. The polished wooden floor immediately began getting flooded with water, dirt and glass.
Nora screamed.
“What’s going on?!”
As the chaotic scene began to settle, a woman walked through the hole in the window. She was soaked from head to toe, but the expression on her face showed nothing but determination.
Lake quickly got up and placed his hands on his sword.
The woman already had her sword drawn.
“Where the fuck is Nia…”
The woman looked up at Nora.
“What… huh…?”
“That filthy bitch stealing my stud! Where the fuck did she go?”
Nora backed up and hid behind the couch that was slowly getting soaked by the rain.
“I-I don’t know… what…”
The woman looked up at Lake.
“You are mine. I went home and decided that I want you to make the child with me. I’m not going to let that bitch take you just because she’s ranked higher.”
Despite the scene, Lake still had an apathetic expression.
However, without even talking to him, she turned her attention onto Nora.
“Are you part of this? Who even are you, are you Nia’s sister or something?!”
Shivering, Nora responded.
“Y-yeah…”
The woman suddenly began laughing.
“Ahaha, I wonder how that bitch would feel if she came home to her dead sister. It’d serve her right. Stealing my promotion, then stealing my stud.”
Lake sighed.
“I wouldn’t do that if I was you.”
“Huh? Who the fuck gave you the right to speak? I didn’t ask for your opinion. I’m just gonna use you to make a beautiful baby.”
Lake looked down listlessly at the woman.
She took a step back and raised her sword.
In return, Lake drew his.
“Don’t you dare fuck with me boy. I’m killing this bitch and then taking you home with me. Put your sword away.”
With anger strewn all over her wet face, hair draped all over her cheeks, she tightened her grip on her [Lampard’s Blade].
“Eastern Style, Deinde Variation: Second Sword!“
As she charged toward Nora, Lake quickly moved to intercept with his [Fallen Knight’s Blade]. The two swords smashed into each other, drawing sparks into the air. Lake clearly noticed that the woman’s attacks were significantly weaker than Seia’s.
“So it seems that Deinde is a weaker variation than Doppler.”
“Shut up! Who the fuck told you about the variations?”
“It was just a deduction.”
The woman quickly repositioned herself and swung again at Lake.
“Eastern Style, Deinde Variation: First Sword!”
Slash. Clang.
Again, Lake easily blocked the attack.
“I see. This is why your status isn’t very high.”
She looked up at Lake with tears in her eyes, but the anger was still protruding from her person, with her grip strengthening on her [Lampard’s Blade].
“I swear. I’ve had enough of everyone underestimating me.”
“Is that the case?”
The woman took a step back before attacking once again.
“Eastern Style, Commodus Variation: Third Sword!”
Clang.
This time, Lake didn’t even have to exert any effort to parry the attack.
“Why did you use a weaker attack than before.”
Grabbing a handful of glass from the water in the house, the woman flung it at Lake in a desperate attack.
He was able to block most of it with his arm, but it did distort his vision.
“Eastern Style, Deinde Variation: Fourth Sword!”
Slightly off-balance, Lake was forced to lower his head and push his blade up against hers. Despite trying with all her might, she wasn’t able to overpower Lake. Eventually, her [Lampard’s Blade] slid off of his [Fallen Knight’s Rapier].
“Are we done with this?”
Reaching into her pocket, the woman pulled out one final trump card.
