Chapter 21: Summer Break
As the summer break began, Rias Gremory and her peerage—Issei, Akeno, Koneko, Kiba, Asia, Xenovia, and Gasper—boarded the luxurious Gremory family train. Azazel, the current leader of the Fallen Angels and now serving as their chemistry teacher, joined them as well. Luna, whose calm demeanor added a sense of tranquility to the lively group, also joined the journey. The train was a masterpiece of devil craftsmanship, blending ancient charm with cutting-edge technology. Its crimson and gold exterior gleamed in the sunlight, while the interior exuded opulence with plush seats, intricately carved wood paneling, and magical enhancements ensuring a smooth and comfortable ride.
As the group settled into their private car, a voice chimed over the magical intercom system announcing the imminent departure. Moments later, the train's enchanted engines hummed to life, gliding smoothly along invisible tracks through the enigmatic Dimension Gap. The surreal landscape around them shimmered with chaotic energy, vast voids of swirling colors.
Azazel leaned back in his seat, clearly enjoying himself, relaxing with a glass of devil-made wine. "This train is quite something," he remarked. "You devils sure know how to travel in style."
Meanwhile, Akeno leaned closer to Issei, her voice carrying its usual sultry tone. "Issei, isn't this the perfect opportunity for us to enjoy some alone time together?" she teased, her eyes sparkling mischievously.
Asia, sitting nearby, quickly noticed and pouted, her cheeks puffing slightly as she glared at Akeno. "I-Issei needs to enjoy the view, not get distracted!" she stammered, her tone tinged with jealousy.
Koneko, meanwhile, sat quietly in the corner, seemingly lost in deep thought as she gazed out the window. The journey promised not just relaxation but also a chance for the group to bond before the summer's activities began. With their destination still hours away, the group settled in for an enjoyable trip on the magnificent Gremory family train.
Upon arrival, the grandeur of Gremory Castle greeted them. Its towering spires and intricate architecture spoke of its rich history and devilish craftsmanship.
"This place is enormous," Issei exclaimed, his eyes wide with amazement.
"The territory of the Gremory family is as large as Japan's Honshu Island," Kiba explained with a smile. "Rias addressed her peerage, her voice carrying a blend of authority and warmth. "As members of the Gremory peerage, you'll each be granted a parcel of land. These lands are more than mere property; they symbolize your standing within the Gremory domain. They also come with responsibilities, including managing the land, contributing to the local community, and protecting it from potential threats. You can decide which piece you want later, based on your preferences and the unique qualities of each region.""
Rias led her peerage toward the castle entrance, where a contingent of servants awaited, bowing deeply. Their polished uniforms gleamed in the warm sunlight, and the scent of blooming roses and freshly trimmed hedges filled the air.
"Welcome home, Lady Rias," the head butler said with a respectful nod, his deep voice resonating through the grand entrance hall. "Your accommodations have been meticulously prepared to your preferences, and a selection of refreshments awaits you in the main hall to help you and your guests relax after your journey."
Rias smiled warmly, her crimson hair catching the light as she replied, "Thank you. It's good to be home."
As the group entered the castle, Gasper nervously clung to the hem of Issei's jacket, his eyes darting around at the bustling servants and grand surroundings. "There are so many people," he muttered, his voice barely above a whisper. The immense scale of the castle and the sheer number of staff seemed to overwhelm him, and he stayed close to Issei as though seeking protection from the intimidating atmosphere.
Koneko and Luna silently observed their surroundings, taking in the familiar yet majestic sights. Grayfia, the ever-dutiful maid and Rias's sister-in-law, greeted them with a graceful bow. Beside her stood Millicas, Rias's young nephew, beaming with excitement.
"Aunt Rias!" Millicas called out, running to her with a bright smile.
Rias knelt to embrace him warmly. "Good to see you, Millicas. My, how you've grown."
Standing behind Millicas was a young man with short black hair and striking green eyes, dressed impeccably in a butler's uniform that reflected his disciplined demeanor. His posture was straight, and his expression calm, exuding an air of quiet competence. Rias turned to him, her tone warm and familiar. "And how have you been, Ko? It's been a while since we last spoke."
"I've been fine, Lady Rias, ensuring that Master Millicas's every need is met and that his studies and training proceed without issue. However, I must extend my apologies for any inconvenience my little sister might have caused you during her time in your service. I can assure you, she has only the utmost respect and dedication towards fulfilling her duties." Ko's polite smile softened his otherwise formal tone, his eyes briefly meeting Luna's with a mixture of teasing and brotherly affection.
Luna's calm demeanor faltered, her serene expression giving way to a sharp glare directed at her brother. "What was that? I've been nothing but attentive to Lady Rias!" she declared, her voice laced with indignation. Her usually composed posture stiffened, and a rare spark of fiery determination flickered in her eyes, emphasizing her unwavering loyalty to Rias. The room's atmosphere grew slightly tense as her words hung in the air, drawing a few surprised glances from the group.
"Luna has been a perfect servant," Rias interjected, her tone firm.
"Oh, that's good to hear," Ko replied, his smile softening.
While they conversed, Issei turned to Kiba. "Who's that kid?"
Before Kiba could answer, Millicas introduced himself. "I'm Millicas Gremory."
"He's my brother Sirzechs's son, which makes him my nephew," Rias explained.
"Sirzechs's son? So he's the Devil King's heir?" Issei asked, stunned. Asia and Xenovia exchanged surprised glances, their expressions mirroring Issei's disbelief. Almost instinctively, the three of them bowed deeply to Millicas, their movements filled with respect and deference.
Rias shook her head, her voice calm yet firm as she explained, "The Devil King title isn't inherited. It is a position that must be earned through merit and strength, not by bloodline. Millicas, while still a valued member of the Gremory family and closely related to Sirzechs, will not automatically ascend to the title. The title remains with the king, reflecting their responsibility and dedication to all devils."
Millicas's servant, Ko, added, "He is next in line after Master Maxius. Master Maxius was renowned for his exceptional abilities and unparalleled intellect, making his departure a significant loss to the Gremory family. Despite his absence, his legacy casts a long shadow, and Millicas, as his nephew, is expected to uphold the high standards associated with the Gremory lineage."
At the mention of Maxius, Rias's expression turned somber, her gaze dropping momentarily as if lost in thought. Issei, Asia, and Xenovia exchanged confused glances, their curiosity piqued by the unfamiliar name. "Who's Maxius?" Xenovia asked cautiously, her tone reflecting both intrigue and concern. Rias took a steadying breath before answering, "Maxius is my twin brother. We were inseparable growing up, always challenging and supporting each other. But five years ago, he left without warning, leaving only a short note. His decision to leave wasn't something any of us expected, and it's left a deep void in our family ever since. No one knows where he is or why he left, but his absence is felt every day."
The room fell silent as her peerage processed the revelation, each member contemplating the weight of Rias's words. Issei's brow furrowed as he tried to piece together the significance of Maxius's absence, while Asia's soft expression hinted at her empathy for the situation. Xenovia's sharp eyes reflected a mixture of curiosity and determination, as though she silently resolved to learn more about this mysterious sibling. The tension lingered for a moment longer before Grayfia's calm and composed voice broke the quiet. "Supper is ready," she announced, her tone as steady and professional as ever. "I'll show you to the dining room."
During dinner, Lady Venelana, Rias's elegant and poised mother, addressed Issei directly, her voice carrying the weight of centuries of tradition. "Issei, I believe it's time you receive proper tutoring in etiquette and the history of devil society," she began, her gaze steady and authoritative. "As someone closely involved with Rias, it is essential that you understand not just our customs, but the responsibilities and expectations that come with associating with a noble house."
"Eh? Why me?" Issei asked, glancing around nervously, his voice rising slightly in pitch. He looked to Rias for support, his eyes silently pleading for a reprieve from the daunting task. His shoulders tensed as the weight of Venelana's authoritative gaze bore down on him, making him shift uncomfortably in his seat. "I mean, I'm just a regular guy," he added hesitantly, his hands gesturing vaguely as if searching for an excuse. "Wouldn't someone else be better suited for this?"
Rias frowned. "Mother, isn't that a bit unnecessary? Issei's doing just fine."
Venelana's sharp gaze silenced her daughter. "Breaking your engagement to Riser was the last selfish act I allowed," she said, her voice carrying a cold finality that filled the room. "You are a Gremory, Rias, and with that comes the weight of expectations and duty. Or do you plan to behave like your brother Maxius, abandoning not only your responsibilities but the trust and faith placed in you by this family?" Her words cut through the air with precision, their harsh truth momentarily subduing Rias's fiery spirit, leaving her in contemplative silence.
Rias's fiery confidence momentarily dimmed, and she nodded quietly, her usual composure giving way to a rare moment of reflection. The weight of her mother's words lingered in her mind, casting a shadow over the lively atmosphere of the castle. The next day, Issei found himself in the vast Gremory library, a breathtaking chamber lined with towering shelves of ancient tomes and illuminated by the soft glow of enchanted chandeliers. The scent of aged parchment and ink filled the air, creating an atmosphere of reverence and focus. Seated at an ornate desk, Issei struggled to focus on the dense text in front of him, his mind occasionally drifting to thoughts of how far removed he felt from this world of nobility and tradition. Beside him, Millicas's youthful enthusiasm shone as he eagerly pointed out passages, his explanations brimming with knowledge and pride. "This one talks about the history of the 72 Pillars," Millicas said, his finger tracing the lines of an intricately illustrated page. "It's fascinating how each family's magic is so unique."
"Issei," Venelana said, her tone patient but firm, "understanding the traditions and history of devil society is crucial if you're to remain by Rias's side. Ignorance can lead to misunderstandings or worse, offense among noble families."
Despite feeling overwhelmed, Issei smiled at Millicas's enthusiasm. "Thanks, Millicas. I guess it's not so bad with you here."
Venelana observed their exchange with satisfaction. "Good. I expect you to take this seriously, Issei. You're part of Rias's world now, and you must be prepared for its challenges."
And so, Issei's education in devil society began, the library's quiet atmosphere filled with the rustle of pages and the soft murmur of lessons that would shape his understanding of Rias's world.
