Chapter 16: Sisters: The More, The Furrier!

As Nari heads back to the inn where she is staying, the sun sinks lower on the horizon, casting long shadows that stretch across the cobblestone streets. She quickens her pace, her heart racing slightly. The town doesn't look as cheerful without sunlight, she thinks, recalling the eerie sensation that washed over her when she had wandered the game's dark alleys in her past life. It was not fun, she concludes, a shiver creeping down her spine as the chill of dusk settles in.

"Why are we going so quickly, Mother?" Valerie, ever inquisitive, looks up at her with wide eyes. Nari slows down just a fraction, glancing at her daughter with a mix of affection and concern.

"You will not want to stay around while the town is dark," she replies, her voice steady but laced with an urgency that she hopes will quell Valerie's curiosity.

They turn a corner, and the comforting glow of the inn comes into view. The door swings open with a creak, and as Nari steps inside, she is struck by a wave of warmth and laughter. To her surprise, Leo, Sarah, and the rest of their group are celebrating, their voices echoing through the dimly lit room.

"Look what we found!" Leo exclaims, brandishing a glimmering piece of treasure. His laughter, infectious and loud, fills the air, but Nari feels a knot tighten in her stomach. The revelry seems foreign to her now, a stark reminder of the camaraderie she once shared.

They're drunk, Nari thinks, a flicker of relief crossing her mind as she realizes that none of them notice her arrival. Poop, she thinks, the frustration bubbling beneath her calm exterior.

Determined not to let her emotions show, Nari races up the stairs with Valerie close behind. The two of them reach their room, and Nari pushes the door open, closing it quickly behind them.

"Master, who is that?" Valerie asks, pointing with an innocent curiosity that pulls Nari from her thoughts. Confused, Nari turns to see a cute girl with white hair, fox ears, and a fluffy tail sitting on the bed, her big blue eyes wide with surprise.

"Mama!" the girl calls out, her voice melodic and sweet. Nari's heart skips a beat as she stares at the girl, who looks so familiar, yet different.

"Iris?" Nari asks, her voice barely above a whisper as she approaches her slowly. The girl nods, her expression shifting from confusion to recognition, mirroring Nari's own surprise. Oh yes! Nari thinks, the realization washing over her. She is turning into a human today. Wow, time goes really quickly in this world.

Unable to resist her cuteness, Nari kneels beside Iris and gently caresses her hair, her fingers gliding through the silky strands. She pokes Iris's cheeks, delighting at her round, chubby face. Just as Nari loses herself in the moment, she hears a low, menacing growl emanating from Valerie, her daughter's jealousy visible in the air.

Nari turns sharply, surprised to see Valerie's expression hardened, her brows furrowed, and her little fangs slightly bared. The growl reverberates in the room, making Iris flinch and hide her face in Nari's chest.

Sensing the tension building between her daughter and Iris, Nari quickly moves to diffuse the situation. She bends down, picking up Valerie and placing her gently next to Iris. "Iris, this is Valerie, your new sibling. And Valerie, this is Iris. Do not kill her, please."

The room fills with an air of awkwardness as Nari tries to maintain peace, but a hint of playfulness glimmers in her eyes. Iris peeks out from Nari's embrace, her expression now a mixture of curiosity and apprehension.

Valerie narrows her eyes at Iris, a protective instinct kicking in. "Why is she here?" she asks, crossing her arms defiantly.

Nari kneels down to Valerie's level, her voice gentle. "Iris is special, Val. She's going to be a part of our family now." She can see the conflict in Valerie's eyes—desire for attention mixed with the challenge of sharing her space with someone new.

Iris, sensing the tension, shifts slightly closer to Nari, seeking comfort. "I don't want to take your mother away we can share her," she whispers, her voice trembling with innocence.

Sensing the sudden tension in the air, Nari quickly swoops Valerie into her arms, placing her next to Iris. "Iris, this is Valerie, your new sibling. And Valerie, this is Iris. Do not kill her, please!" Nari declares, her voice light but serious, attempting to diffuse the awkwardness.

"Why would I kill her?" Valerie huffs, crossing her arms dramatically, her lips pursed in mock annoyance. "She's cute and all, but I thought it was going to be just me and you!"

"Oh, come on, it's not every day you get a sister who's part fox!" Nari chuckles, her laughter breaking the ice. Iris giggles, her eyes sparkling with mischief as she begins to play with Valerie's hair, twirling the strands around her fingers. Valerie, pretending to be annoyed, can't help but let out a small smile, her icy demeanor melting away in the warmth of sisterly affection.

The three of them form a delightful scene, Nari watching with her heart swelling with warmth. The sight of her new sisters bonding brings a wide grin to her face. Iris's innocent curiosity contrasts perfectly with Valerie's reluctant acceptance, creating a balance that makes Nari feel grateful for the unexpected family she's found.

As they begin to play, Nari sits cross-legged on the floor, her laughter mingling with the giggles of her daughters. "What should we do now?" Iris asks, her voice bubbling with excitement. Nari glances around the room, and notices a 6 stools and a small table next to her and conjures up some stuffed animals. "How about a tea party?" she suggests, her eyes twinkling with delight.

"Yes! but what is a tea party?" Iris says, clasping her hands together confused. Valerie rolls her eyes but can't hide her smirk, the tension from earlier forgotten. "I'll show you, but I'm not wearing any silly hats," she retorts, trying to maintain her tough exterior but failing miserably as Iris drags her into the playful chaos.

Nari watches them, feeling a sense of belonging wash over her. The warmth of their laughter fills the room, and for the first time, she feels the weight of her past lift, replaced by the blossoming bonds of sisterhood. It's a new beginning, one filled with laughter, mischief, and the unbreakable ties of family
