Chapter 23: Secrets in the Shadows
Nari's heart raced as she processed the servant's words. "Young master?" The term didn't align with anything she knew about Leo. Who was this "father" the man was talking about? And what did Leo have to do with someone connected to the demon lord?
From her hiding spot, she watched Leo's reaction. He crossed his arms, his stance rigid. "I told you before," he said, his voice low but firm. "I'm not going back."
"But, young master," the servant insisted, stepping closer. "Your rightful place is by your father's side. The demon lord grows impatient, and he will not tolerate further delay."
Leo's jaw tightened. "I don't care. I have a life here now."
The servant's expression darkened, his tone taking on a warning edge. "You cannot escape your bloodline. The power within you belongs to the demon lord. You're his heir."
Nari's breath hitched. "Heir?" she mouthed, her mind spinning. Leo, the heir to the demon lord? It seemed impossible, and yet the pieces began to fall into place. His mysterious disappearances, his uncanny strength, the way he sometimes seemed to carry a weight heavier than anyone else could see. It all made sense now.
Leo stepped closer to the servant, his eyes blazing with defiance. "Tell my father this: I'm not his pawn. I'll never serve him or his twisted plans."
The servant's lips curled into a sinister smile. "You may resist, young master, but the time will come when you cannot deny your destiny." With that, the man vanished as suddenly as he had appeared, leaving only a faint ripple in the air where he had stood.
For a moment, Leo stood there in silence, his shoulders tense. Then he turned, and Nari quickly pressed herself against the tree, her heart pounding. She waited until she was sure he had gone back inside before stepping out of her hiding spot.
Her mind was a whirlwind of thoughts and emotions. Leo, the heir to the demon lord? The revelation was staggering, but it also filled her with a fierce determination. Whatever this "destiny" was, she wouldn't let it consume him. He was more than his bloodline, and she'd fight to prove it if she had to.
As she crept back into the house, she resolved to confront him—but not yet. She needed time to think, to prepare for what this truth could mean for both of them. One thing was certain: the peaceful life they had built together was about to be tested in ways neither of them could have imagined.
