Chapter 13: A Monkey vs. A Monster
---
BOOM!
The black spear of magic tore through the air, aimed straight at Wukong's chest.
His instincts screamed.
Dodge!
Wukong sidestepped, barely avoiding the attack. The spear slammed into the stone behind him—
Ssssshhhhh—CRACK!
The rock rotted instantly, turning to dust.
Wukong whistled. "Damn. That would've sucked."
The hooded mage smirked. "You're quick. But can you fight back?"
They raised both hands—and from the shadows, three more spears formed.
Lily shouted, "Wukong, move!"
Too late—they fired.
---
Instincts vs. Power
Wukong's body moved on its own.
His training kicked in—footwork first. He leapt, twisting midair, dodging the first two spears.
The third one?
It was too fast.
"Tch—!"
He threw up his hand on instinct—
And his black mist flared to life.
FWOOSH!
The mist coiled around his arm, forming a jagged shield—just in time to block the spear.
BOOM!
The impact sent him skidding backward, feet dragging across the stone floor. The shield cracked, dark energy shuddering—
And then dissipated.
Wukong shook his arm. His hand stung. That blocked the attack, but it still drained him.
He clicked his tongue. "Tch. Not bad."
The mage grinned. "You're learning. But let's see if you can keep up."
They vanished.
---
A Mage Who Doesn't Stay Still
Wukong's eyes darted around—where did they go?!
Suddenly—
SHHHHHH!
A black chain shot from the left. Wukong barely ducked—
But another chain flew in from the right!
CRACK!
The chain slammed into his ribs, sending him flying.
He hit the ground hard, coughing.
Tian flinched. "Damn! You okay?!"
Wukong spat out dust. "Yeah, yeah. Just enjoying the view down here."
Lily groaned. "This is serious!"
Wukong rolled onto his feet, grinning through the pain.
"Heh. It's been a while since I had to work for a fight."
---
A Monkey Adapts
The mage didn't stop. Their black chains whipped around, attacking from every angle.
But Wukong?
He was getting used to it.
His eyes followed the movements. His body adjusted.
Instead of just dodging—
He started predicting.
A chain lashed out—he twisted under it.
Another one struck—he deflected it with a mist-coated palm.
Step by step, second by second, he was catching up.
And then—
He saw an opening.
---
A Monkey Bites Back
The mage flicked their wrist—another black spear formed—
But this time, Wukong was faster.
He lunged forward, mist swirling around his hands.
The mage's eyes widened. "What—?"
Wukong grinned—
And struck with an open palm.
BAM!
A shockwave erupted from the impact—his mist-infused attack collided with the mage's magic, canceling it out.
The mage stumbled back, surprised.
Wukong didn't let up.
He whirled around—his mist forming a blade along his arm—
And sliced forward!
SWOOSH!
The blade cut through the air, aiming for the mage's chest—
But—!
The moment it touched their robes…
It stopped.
---
A Mage's Warning
Wukong blinked. What?
The blade should have rotted whatever it touched. But instead—
The mage grabbed Wukong's arm, stopping him cold.
They smirked. "Not bad."
Wukong's instincts flared—danger!
BOOM!
A burst of dark energy exploded from the mage's palm, blasting Wukong backward.
He hit the ground hard, skidding across the floor.
Tian winced. "Oof. That looked painful."
Lily ran up. "Wukong!"
Wukong coughed, pushing himself up. Damn.
The mage approached slowly, arms crossed. "You passed the test."
Wukong blinked. "Wait… what?"
The mage chuckled. "That was just a sparring session. But you've proved you can control the magic without losing yourself. So…"
They snapped their fingers.
A new book appeared, floating toward Wukong.
"Here. Your real training starts now."
