Chapter 5: Chapter 5
Walking down the street after yet another training session, I decided to take a shortcut through the park. As I passed a small clearing, I heard some commotion on the other side of the bushes. Needless to say, the system reacted immediately.
Quest Received:
"Rookie Rescuer"
You heard strange noises coming from the bushes. Sure, there's a chance that this is the birth of a new ninja, but shinobi in this world aren't crazy enough to do that in a park. It's more likely that someone's in trouble. Save the poor soul and boost your reputation among the villagers!
Completion Conditions: Help the victim.
Reward: +200 experience, increased reputation with the rescued victim, and a system update that will grant you bonus karma.
Failure/Penalty: -2000 reputation with all Konoha factions.
Accept Quest? Yes/No.
This is blackmail! Still, I don't want to find out what the already unfriendly Konoha factions will do to me if my reputation drops even further. With such a massive decrease, even the neutral ones might turn hostile. So, I accepted and prepared to deal with whatever threat awaited me. Hopefully, I'd find Hinata. She's not really my type, but she'd do.
Carefully pushing through the bushes, I emerged and—honestly, I wanted to shout, "Where's Hinata?"—because the scene before me completely shattered my expectations.
A very recognizable young Sasuke was beating the living daylights out of someone I barely recognized as the child version of Kiba Inuzuka! Without the animalistic features and facial markings he'd get later, I wouldn't have known it was him if not for the system name tag and his half-depleted health bar. Wait, half-depleted? I guess I have to step in. As much as I don't want to get on Sasuke's bad side, completing this quest is more important. It'd be even more annoying if Kiba actually deserved it.
"Hey, bug eyes, leave him alone," I declared, stepping boldly out of the bushes.
"Get lost," Sasuke said, glaring at me with what he thought was a menacing look. Naturally, he got punched in the face by Kiba for his trouble. Never get distracted during a fight, genius.
To my disappointment, Kiba didn't press his advantage. Instead, while Sasuke was dazed, he nodded to me and bolted as fast as he could. Guess I overestimated his fighting instincts. But honestly, he had a point.
Without wasting any more time, I turned and made a hasty exit myself. No way was I getting into a real fight with the heir of a still-powerful clan. It'd cost me more than I could afford. Right now, this was just a clan squabble, and I hadn't laid a finger on anyone—just used my voice strategically. But the moment I so much as hit Sasuke, things would get serious, and I'd be in big trouble as an orphan.
After putting some distance between us, I nearly ran into Kiba, who was slumped against a tree. Man, Sasuke really landed some good hits on him.
"Did you see me get him?" Kiba asked, tilting his head back and trying to stop the blood from dripping out of his nose.
"Yeah, textbook perfect!" I said encouragingly. There's a big difference between ordinary kids, who would be crying their eyes out after something like this, and a kid from a clan.
"Hah, you're funny! I'm Kiba. What's your name?" he said, giving me a closer look and even sniffing the air.
At that moment, I got a system notification:
Quest Complete! Congratulations!
As a result of the quest, you've gained a new pet… friend!
Relationship with Kiba Inuzuka: +3000 (Friendship).
Relationship with the Inuzuka Clan: +300.
Relationship with Sasuke Uchiha: -250.
200 XP earned.
New Quest Received!
"Transport the Injured Fighter"
Help your new friend reach the Inuzuka Clan District.
Completion Conditions: Reach the entrance to the Inuzuka Clan District before the end of the day.
Time Remaining: 6:34:59.
Reward: +150 XP, improved relationships with your first friend and his clan, permission to visit the Inuzuka Clan District in the future, and the opening of three quest chains with the Inuzuka Clan. Also, improved reputation with ordinary Konoha villagers.
Failure/Penalty: Decreased reputation with the Inuzuka Clan and a loss of several relationship points with your first friend. Variable outcomes possible.
Accept Quest? Yes/No.
Of course, I accepted! Free experience is everything. I only need 60 more mosquito—uh, I mean experience points—to level up! Plus, fully securing one clan as an ally and strengthening my bond with their heir sounds great.
"And I'm Uzumaki Naruto!" I introduced myself proudly.
"Let me help you get home," I added, noticing Kiba trying to act tough and independent. Before he could refuse, I went on, "You could probably handle it on your own, but what if that Uchiha comes back with reinforcements? You know how they are. It's always easier with two people!"
Ignoring the notification about leveling up my Persuasion skill and Narutotherapy, I pushed ahead. I wasn't manipulating anyone—I was just… exaggerating the truth. A little.
"Yeah, good idea. Two is better," Kiba agreed. Kids really are easy to convince. I'd almost forgotten that in my solitude.
Still, despite his words, I practically had to drag him to the Inuzuka Clan gates. How did he even manage to run from the clearing earlier? Along the way, I got two separate +5 relationship notifications. My friendly gesture wasn't going unnoticed.
At the gates, I handed Kiba off to a giant one-eyed dog—if I remember right, it's his mother's ninken. Trying not to look at Kiba, who had turned pale at the thought of the scolding he'd face, I quickly left. The system messages made it worth it, though:
Quest completed!
Additional rewards: +200 reputation with Kiba and his clan.
Getting to the clan gates before sunset wasn't easy, given my lack of stamina and how heavy Kiba was, but I managed.
The quest chains, however, worried me. The first—"Friendship with the Clan"—looked fine and was the only one available. The second—"Training the Young Hounds"—was a bit concerning, as I didn't have the levels or stats for it yet. But the third one terrified me:
"Taming the Lone Wolf" (Locked until the Player's body reaches age 16).
What am I supposed to do with that? I remember a certain mission involving a rabbit and understand that the system wants me to develop in every direction, but I'm more scared of Tsume Inuzuka than I am of Tsunade!
I wandered back through the park in a daze, still shaken and not looking forward to growing up. No matter how much things might change, that future scares me.
As if on cue, I heard rustling from the same bushes again. Seriously, is this fate? And confirming my thoughts, I got the exact same quest notification as before, now labeled with a "2"!
Spoiler: I'llsoon start avoiding this park like the plague.
…And curse the Narutotherapy skill.
