Rise in the Ashfall : The Final Days

Chapter 7: Chapter 6: The Scavenger’s Path

The sun climbed higher in the ash-streaked sky, casting faint shadows over the battered settlement. Kael Arden stood in the shadow of the reinforced watchtower, his gaze fixed on the horizon. Despite the brief respite after the Necrostorm, tension hummed in the air.

The base was holding together, but just barely. His walls could take another attack or two, but without proper supplies—steel, wood, fuel, and most critically, food—it wouldn't matter how strong his defenses were.

The HUD pulsed faintly in his vision, as if nudging him toward action.

[Objective: Resupply Essential Resources.

Recommended Action: Scavenge Nearby Locations.]

Kael sighed, tightening the straps of the scavenger's satchel slung over his shoulder. "Yeah, I got the memo," he muttered.

His eyes flicked to the storage room one last time. The shelves looked depressingly empty, the lone fuel canister sitting in a corner like an unwanted guest. He had no choice but to leave the safety of the settlement and venture into the wasteland.

He gripped the hilt of his rusted pipe, now wrapped with strips of cloth for better grip. "Let's hope this isn't the worst decision I've ever made."

The base's north gate groaned as Kael unlocked the reinforced latches and pushed it open just enough to slip through. The sound made him wince—too loud, too exposed—but he didn't stop. The HUD marked nearby points of interest on his map, overlaying the wasteland with faint blue markers.

One location stood out: Ashridge Outpost.

It was a ruined military supply depot about a mile to the northeast, marked with a faint orange warning indicator. Kael's brow furrowed as he studied the details.

[Ashridge Outpost:

Threat Level: Moderate. Resources: High (Steel, Ammunition, Food).]

"Moderate threat, huh?" Kael muttered. "Guess that's better than 'suicidal.'"

The outpost was his best shot at resupplying the base. He adjusted his satchel and began walking, the crunch of ash and gravel under his boots the only sound in the still air.

Kael had spent countless hours exploring the wasteland in Ashfall, but seeing it in person was a different kind of haunting.

The ground was dry and cracked, a vast expanse of lifeless earth scattered with rusted debris and the skeletal remains of trees. Broken power lines sagged between crumbling towers, and the occasional wrecked vehicle lay half-buried in ash.

Here and there, he spotted the remnants of what might have once been homes or businesses, their walls scorched and collapsed. He tried not to think too much about the people who'd lived there, the lives they'd led before the virus turned everything into this.

The air was heavy, tinged with the faint smell of decay that seemed to linger everywhere. Kael kept his pipe in hand, his senses on high alert as he moved from one piece of cover to the next.

|Ashridge Outpost|

The outpost came into view after about thirty minutes of walking. It was larger than Kael had expected—a cluster of concrete buildings surrounded by a rusted chain-link fence. The main entrance was marked by a broken metal gate, its hinges twisted and jagged as though something had torn it apart.

Kael crouched behind an overturned truck, surveying the area. The HUD highlighted several potential points of interest:

[Supply Shed: A small building near the east side of the compound.

Armory: A larger structure at the center, heavily fortified but partially collapsed.

Barracks: A series of connected buildings near the south end, likely to contain food and other essentials.]

The system also flagged movement inside the compound. Kael's stomach tightened as his HUD identified a group of shambling figures near the armory.

[Detected Hostiles: 8 (Standard Zombies).]

"Could've been worse," Kael whispered to himself, gripping the pipe tighter. "I've handled worse."

Kael slipped through a gap in the fence, moving cautiously along the perimeter. His first target was the supply shed—small, relatively isolated, and unlikely to draw attention.

The door hung crooked on its hinges, squealing faintly as Kael pushed it open. Inside, he found shelves covered in a thick layer of dust, but his heart leapt when he spotted the glint of metal beneath the grime.

[Resources Collected:

5 Steel Units.

3 Wood Units.

2 Wire Coils.]

Kael stuffed the supplies into his satchel, his mind already calculating how far they'd go back at the settlement. He was about to leave when a low growl froze him in place.

Turning slowly, Kael spotted a zombie at the far end of the shed. Its gray, rotting flesh hung in loose strips, and its milky eyes glowed faintly as it shambled toward him.

Kael tightened his grip on the pipe, raising it as the zombie lunged. He sidestepped its attack, bringing the weapon down hard on the back of its head. The creature crumpled to the floor, twitching once before going still.

He exhaled shakily, his pulse pounding in his ears.

With the supply shed cleared, Kael turned his attention to the barracks. The cluster of buildings was larger, with multiple entry points and broken windows that made it difficult to know what might be waiting inside.

Kael climbed through a shattered window, landing softly on the dusty floor. The air inside was stale, filled with the faint smell of mildew and rot. Rows of bunk beds lined the walls, many of them overturned or broken.

Moving cautiously, Kael searched each room, opening lockers and cabinets as he went.

[Resources Collected:

6 Food Packs.

3 Water Canisters.

1 Fuel Canister.]

Kael's heart lifted at the sight of the food packs. They weren't much—small, vacuum-sealed pouches of nutrient paste—but they were better than starving.

The system chimed softly in his HUD:

[Food Supplies Updated. Settlement Rations: 3 Days.]

"Well, that's one less thing to worry about," Kael muttered.

The final stop was the armory. Kael approached it cautiously, his HUD marking the movement of the zombies he'd spotted earlier. They were clustered near the building's entrance, shambling aimlessly but blocking his path.

Kael considered his options. The system offered several suggestions:

[Tactical Options:

Lure Zombies Away: Create a distraction to draw them from the entrance.

Direct Combat: Engage the hostiles head-on.

Stealth Entry: Use the collapsed section of the building to sneak inside.]

Kael opted for stealth. He circled the building, climbing over the rubble of the collapsed wall. Inside, the armory was dark and cluttered, the floor covered in debris.

Kael's flashlight flickered as he searched the shelves, finding boxes of ammunition, old tools, and a few intact weapons.

[Resources Collected:

2 Ammunition Crates.

1 Shotgun (Damaged).

1 Repair Kit.]

The shotgun was a game-changer, even in its current state. Kael tucked it into his satchel alongside the repair kit, his mind already racing with plans to restore it.

Kael left the outpost the way he came, avoiding the remaining zombies as he slipped through the broken fence. The journey back to the settlement felt longer, his body weighed down by the supplies in his satchel and the lingering tension in his chest.

When he finally reached the base, the sight of the watchtower rising above the perimeter walls filled him with a sense of relief. The settlement wasn't perfect, but it was home—for now.

Kael unloaded the supplies in the workshop, the system updating his inventory with a soft chime.

[Resource Stockpile Updated:

Steel: 15 Units.

Wood: 9 Units.

Wire Coils: 6 Units.

Fuel Canisters: 2 Units.]

As he set the food packs on the storage shelves, Kael couldn't help but smile. It wasn't much, but it was a start.

He collapsed into a chair, his exhaustion finally catching up to him. For now, the base was secure, and he had enough supplies to hold out for a few more days.

The wasteland still loomed beyond the walls, filled with danger and uncertainty, but Kael wasn't afraid. He was ready to face whatever came next.
